How to Overcome a Clothes Rut + Enter to Win a $250 Shopping Spree with thredUP!

by Meghann on March 15, 2017

This post is sponsored by thredUP.

Do you ever get in a clothing rut? I tend to fall into one at least once (if not twice) a year. What happens is I slowly lose interest in anything in my closet. Instead of quickly being able to pick out an outfit, I will literally stare at my closet (sometimes for up to 30 minute) trying to figure what the hell I’m going to wear for the day. Sometimes there are tears, other times there are piles of discarded clothes everywhere, and almost always I am late for work wearing something I only feel so-so about. It’s a vicious cycle that usually leads to a closet purge, followed closely by new pieces of “inspiration.”

Enter: thredUP. My current go-to for a little closet inspiration.  thredUP is the largest online store that buys and sells high-quality secondhand fashion for women and kids. They specialize in on trend like-new fashion from top name brands and designers for up to 90% off.

Psst…. thredUP is offering Meals and Miles readers a special discount! The first 100 people to use my code MEALS40 will get an extra 40% off their first order! (Applies to new US customers only. Discount up to $50)

Not only is there a discount, but thredUP would like to give one lucky Meals and Miles reader their own shopping spree!See below for more details.

I love it because, as a full time working mom, online shopping is my jam. Their website is easy to navigate and I can easily search for secondhand pieces by style, size, and designer in my underwear (I hate digging through sales racks to find what I’m looking for. Also, I hate pants). Plus, shopping secondhand is better for the planet and your wallet. If 1 out of 100 American households shopped secondhand, they would collectively save 1.6 BILLION every year. That’s enough for each of those households to pay for 2 years of college.

Check-it out. I saved a total of $763.08 on my last order. That’s basically three weeks of daycare!

To help with my style rut, I needed some work-appropriate versatile pieces that I could mix-and-match with items already in my current closet. I was also looking for a hot dress for a night out on the town and something bright and fun for Easter next month. I was giddy with excitement when I spotted the polka dotted box on my doorstep less than a week later.

There’s nothing like a big box full of new clothes to help break a clothing rut.

thredUP triple inspects each item by hand to ensure all clothes are like-new, many are even brand new with tags! Every product has a detailed description so you get an idea of what to expect and, to add some personalization to the process, thredUP tags each piece of clothing with a thredUP tag.

So let’s take a look at what outfits I created using my new thredUP pieces for inspiration.

Outfit #1: Business Casual

  • From thredUP:
    • J. Crew Sleeveless Blouse Originally $88, thredUP price: $23.99
    • Sociology Wedge Originally $37, thredUP price: $10.99 (purchased last October)

I love this J. Crew top. It’s bright, flattering, and perfect for spring. I can wear it with jeans to the office or with navy shorts to the zoo.

Outfit #2: Network Event

  • From thredUP:
    • J. Crew Short Sleeve Top, Originally $110, thredUP price: $28.99
    • White House Black Market Casual Skirt, Originally $88, thredUP price: $25.99

I had a network event I headed to straight from the office one evening and thought these pieces made the perfect ensemble to go from day-to-night. All I had to do was switch out the black sandals for the red heels above and I was ready to network.

Outfit #3: Business Appropriate

  • From thredUP:
    • J. Crew Casual Skirt, Originally $98, thredUP price: $22.99

My office is pretty casual, but some days I need to dress up a little more if I’m meeting a client. The yellow skirt gives the outfit a great pop of color, which pairs nicely with the Florida sunshine. Also, do you see a trend here with J. Crew? I really enjoy thredUP’s feature of narrowing down which labels you want to review. Clearly J. Crew was on the top of my list.

Outfit #4: Night Out On the Town

  • From thredUP:
    • White House Black Market Cocktail Dress, Originally $200, thredUP price: $25.99

Derek and I went out not to long ago and I realized my closet was desperately missing anything that would be appropriate for the super-fancy restaurant we had reservations at. I ended up throwing something together, but I wasn’t happy about it. Not wanting to run into the situation again, “hot dress for night out with husband” was on top of my shopping list. Of course, now I have the dress and no immediate plans to go out. We’ll just have to change that. I mean having an awesome dress is the best excuse for a night out, right?

Outfit #5: Easter

  • From thredUP:
    • J. Crew Casual Dress, Originally $158, thredUP price: $22.99
    • Janie and Jack Dress, Originally $59, thredUP price: $8.99

Easter is a little more than a month away and I wanted something bright and springy to wear. The yellow J. Crew dress was a win, as was the Janie and Jack dress I got for Annalynn. I love Janie and Jack clothes, but they are usually too far out of my price range. Thank you thredUP for making the adorable brand affordable.

Oh, one last item! The J. Crew dress below ended up being my favorite of the order. In fact, I was wearing it when I took all the outfit photos, so I missed getting an outfit photo for it. It’s light, comfortable, and it has pockets! I’ve already worn it to the office and to brunch last weekend. It was an amazing find.

Don’t Forget!

thredUP is offering Meals and Miles readers a special discount! The first 100 people to use my code MEALS40 will get an extra 40% off their first order! (Applies to new US customers only. Discount up to $50)

ThredUp is my favorite! I’m in the process of losing weight so as I transition between sizes, it’s perfect for getting clothes without spending a bunch of money. 🙂 I also love how it saves your sizes so I don’t find something I love only to find out it’s not my size.

I love this dress!

2 Ana March 15, 2017 at 8:44 am

Love all your outfits. Definitely going to check it out

3 Kaelin March 15, 2017 at 8:46 am

I could definitely use a few new pieces for Spring – new shorts, sandals, and a light jacket are on my list! Thanks for the giveaway.

4 Katy March 15, 2017 at 9:00 am
5 Jennie March 15, 2017 at 9:11 am

I really love this dress for a night out!

But I’d probably buy all new work clothes. I have a 9 month old and not much of my old stuff fits. And the stuff that does I feel so blah about!

6 Libby March 15, 2017 at 9:13 am

Having just gotten back into the business world, I love this website! I’m really partial to any Ann Taylor dresses for work, especially this one!

P.S. you got some great finds!! 🙂

7 Brandy H. March 15, 2017 at 9:16 am
I love these!!! They would be perfect for work (I work at a gym)!

8 Carol March 15, 2017 at 9:24 am

What a great site, this is perfect for Easter (and spring events!):

9 Camara March 15, 2017 at 9:25 am

There are some black boots on there that I love!

10 Jaclyn March 15, 2017 at 9:28 am

I have been looking at ThredUp for about 2 months now. How do returns work, as I tend to be multiple sizes depending on the name brand?

If I could purchase something today, it would be this for work:

11 Jessica March 15, 2017 at 9:31 am

Love this! My daughter is almost a year old and I am still unable to fit into many (or any if I’m being really honest!) of my pre-pregnancy work clothes, so I’m rotating between the 4 outfits that I have. Would love a refresh especially something cute like this!

12 Lindsay March 15, 2017 at 9:33 am
13 Heather March 15, 2017 at 9:45 am
14 Melanie March 15, 2017 at 9:51 am

16 Jessica March 15, 2017 at 10:06 am

I am all about second hand shopping. I love those red pumps. Thank you so much for the giveaway!!

I loved this purse:

And this dress:

17 Carly March 15, 2017 at 10:14 am

Track pants! I am always in need of more workout pants. If for no other reason than I think my neighbors are starting to judge me for walking the dog in my stormtrooper pj pants.

18 Jillian March 15, 2017 at 10:14 am
19 Angie March 15, 2017 at 11:01 am
20 Elana March 15, 2017 at 11:05 am

Loving this Theory dress. Why do the clothes always look so wrinkled though?!

21 Natalie March 15, 2017 at 12:19 pm

How fun! I love second hand stuff! I would choose these sandals:

22 Shannon March 15, 2017 at 12:21 pm

You are brilliant! Why hadn’t I thought to look on thredUP for Janie & Jack clothes for my baby girl?? I love this little dress for her:

I signed up and will be purchasing some items for her (maybe me, too). There are so many cute baby brands out there that are way too expensive for me to justify brand new. But secondhand? Yessss.

23 LizY March 15, 2017 at 12:39 pm

I am loving this fish print j crew top! I have been wandering around (virtually) on thred up looking for clothes for my daughter…but have yet to put the effort really into looking for myself!!

24 Paige March 15, 2017 at 1:10 pm
25 Krystal Badyrka March 15, 2017 at 1:17 pm

This would be perfect for my office and then on to a dinner date!

26 Kalee March 15, 2017 at 1:19 pm

Would love to add this cute dress to my spring wardrobe!!

27 Erin March 15, 2017 at 1:21 pm

I’d love this dress for Easter. I’m six months pregnant and it’s hard to find cute dresses!

28 Kara McDonald March 15, 2017 at 1:21 pm

I couldn’t wait for the shopping spree, so I just bought four things using your discount code and saved $145! I’ve used the clean-out service, but never shopped for myself. Your outfits were so fantastic that it pushed me over the edge! Thank you, Meghann. 🙂

I adore this H&M dress – perfect for a night out or the office with a blazer:

29 Meghann March 15, 2017 at 2:34 pm

Ha! Enjoy the new-to-you clothes!

30 lauren March 15, 2017 at 1:23 pm

33 Katie March 15, 2017 at 2:43 pm

34 Julie March 15, 2017 at 4:30 pm
35 Haley B March 15, 2017 at 4:40 pm

Love this dress! I’m all about the flowy dresses and this one would be cute by itself or with a cardigan for a dressier look!

36 Dee Johnson March 15, 2017 at 4:41 pm
37 brittney March 15, 2017 at 4:44 pm

I’ve heard of ThredUp but never took a look before, and now I’m kind of obsessed. I might just have to get this skirt

38 Stacey March 15, 2017 at 4:46 pm

ThredUp is the best for work clothes-I don’t like to spend a ton on pants/shorts because I will likely get bike grease on them (I work in a bike shop). If I had to choose something on the site right now it would have to be this cute dress I wear out on a date with my husband or out with my girlfriends—>
