Mother’s Day 2014

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mamas, baby-mamas, fur-mamas, and mamas-to-be out there!

I’m very blessed to have two very wonderful mamas in my life. My mom, who is clearly one of the best moms on the planet.


She spent the day celebrating with my dad at Epcot. Like mother, like daughter – we both have a soft spot for Disney World. 😉

And my mother-in-law, who did a pretty kick-ass job raising the man I love.


Derek and I spent the morning celebrating my mother-in-law with Mother’s Day brunch at one of our favorite brunch spots in Tampa, Grille 54.


Grille 54 does a delicious Sunday brunch buffet that includes all-you-can-drink mimosas and bloody marys. It’s usually a pretty sweet deal (all you can eat and drink for $25.95!), but they upped their prices by $10 for the brunch-heavy holiday. Not cool.

Still, the food was delicious and I happily drank my weight in mimosas. You’re going to charge more? No problem, I’ll just drink more. Gotta get my money’s worth somehow, right?


The buffet covers your typical brunch favorites (eggs, bacons, sausage, waffles, french toast, salads, etc.) and also features an omelet bar, carving station, and raw bar. They have a fried green tomato eggs benedict that’s out of this world.

Of course, dessert is always my favorite part of any meal. Today’s display was particularly fabulous.

We finished the meal with a round of coffees and by letting our belts loose another notch. So good. So full.

The rest of the day was spent with my fur-baby.


Maddie and I escaped to the park for the afternoon. I was expecting the park to be really busy and packed, just as it is every weekend, but it was eerily quiet and empty. I guess the park isn’t a popular Mother’s Day destination?


We walked, we ran, we enjoyed the quiet afternoon with the park basically to ourselves.

It was another quiet weekend, which was really nice. Saturday was mainly spent getting the house in order. We’re hoping to get it on the market in the next couple of weeks – fingers crossed!

In preparation of our upcoming trip to the Rock ‘n’ Roll Seattle Half Marathon next month, Kira Harrison, a footwear merchandising associate at Brooks Running, recently shared some fun and handy travel tips with me. Kira is a lifelong runner who travels the world to gather insight, build award-winning shoes and to help people everywhere run happy. She has mastered the art of traveling as her job requires her to pack up and go quite frequently.

As someone who also travels frequently for her job, I agree 100% with everything she has to say. Staying active on the road is tough, but these simple tips are good reminders on how to make it work.

  1. Get out the door in the morning before your day starts. When you are on the road, your schedule can often be unpredictable, by running in the morning you guarantee getting your run in and it energizes you for the rest of the day.
  2. Use your run as a sightseeing opportunity. Running is a great way to see a new place and the run becomes an adventure vs. just exercise.
  3. Pack fast drying apparel, made of synthetic fibers. Because you won’t be able to do laundry on the road, you want your gear to dry before you have to pack it back into your suitcase. Also, a plastic bag to wrap around your shoes is helpful to keep dirt and smell away from the rest of your belongings.
  4. Connect with a local running store for advice on routes. They also may have running groups that leave from their store which will provide you with running buddies. If crunched for time, the hotel concierge is also a great resource. Many have pocket-sized maps with recommended running routes, making it simple to get in a good run right out the front door.
  5. To keep your legs fresh, wear compression socks on the airplane. This helps maintain blood flow and your legs will feel better on your run.
