No Longer Temporary

by Meghann on March 13, 2014

I was looking back at old photos yesterday and it hit me that this month I’ve officially been in Tampa for three years.

Holy moly, time sure does fly when you’re having fun, right?

Admittedly, I wasn’t exactly thrilled with Tampa when I first got here. I moved for a boy (a boy that would eventually become my husband) and, in all honesty, a boy I would have moved clear across the country for if he asked me. Derek and I had been dating for about two years at that point and we were at a place where we knew one of us would have to make the big move if our relationship was going to continue to grow (I was living in Orlando at that point and he was in Tampa). I loved Orlando with all my heart, but at that time it just made more sense for me to move to Tampa. So I quit my job, started working for myself, and said good-bye to the city I had fallen in love with.

It took a while to adjust to the move. I saw Tampa as a “temporary solution” (our original plan was to live here for 2-3 years, then move back to Orlando – HA!) and I wasn’t quite ready to cut all ties with the city I loved. Heck, for the first few months I was still traveling to Orlando at least once a week (if not more!). To be honest, I wasn’t giving Tampa a fair shot and wasn’t making much of an effort to settle in.

Eventually all the trips to Orlando became too much and I knew I had to cut ties. Very slowly I started to venture out in Tampa a little more. I started making friends, attending group outings, and putting myself out there. I became a member of the Tampa Bay Bloggers, I got really involved with Yelp, and I took advantage of every local networking opportunity I could. I was hungry to be involved with the local community and really began to sink my teeth into it.

One day my friend Courtney invited me to a swim practice with her training group and things really started to click. That swim practice turned into another, then another, and another. The training group became more than just a training group, they became my best friends. They became the Tampa rocks I had desperately been seeking and really made Tampa home for me. I’m not sure I could have survived the last two years without them.

After working for myself for 2 years, I returned to an office job a year ago. Yep, a year ago. Crazy to think I’ve been in my job now for A YEAR. Thanks to my job, I feel more connected to Tampa than ever. I have my dream job, I have friends, and I have a city that still surprises me everyday with what it has to offer.

So my “temporary move” doesn’t feel as temporary anymore, now it simply feels like home. I love Tampa and I’m not afraid to admit it. Orlando will always have a place in my heart, but Tampa is definitely home now.

Cheers to three years as a Tampan (ha!) and hope for many more to come!

How long have you lived in your current city?

Aw yay! So nice to hear when things work out well 🙂

We moved here to Sarasota in July and we love it! Definitely better than other places we’ve lived!!

I just moved to a new city 2 weeks ago! Meeting people is the scariest part, you’ve inspired me to keep trying, I’ll make this place my home too!

making friends as an adult is a strangely weird thing to do. i find that common interests such as yoga, running, tris, blogging, etc. really help. i’m happy to hear that you’re finally feeling settled in tampa. it makes such a difference to FEEL settled.

i have been in charlotte for five years now (crazy!) and can’t imagine anywhere else i’d rather be at this point in my life.

I’ve lived in my current city since May 2013. I am moving to Boston in August, though, and will be living there for at least the next 4 years.

I’ve been in my current city for three years now too, and that’s just crazy to me! It doesn’t feel like that long at all. I miss the other places I’ve lived too (all around the country–I’m a nomad), but I’m happy where I am.

I just moved to Tampa in May. I am still getting the hang of the place and working on meeting new people — I hope fitness leads me there! This was a really helpful post for me to read since I’m basically in the same situation you were in a few years ago! There is hope for me. Lol.

Wow! I feel like just yesterday I was reading your moving posts and could hear the sadness in your words. I’m so happy you now feel like you’re home and you’ve found an awesome job, network and husband. I’ve lived in NYC for 12 years!!!!!!! It’s kind of crazy. I can’t imagine ever leaving and I feel so thankful when I walk the city blocks (unless it’s below 30 degrees) that said I can’t imagine raising kids here, so we’ll see what the future holds.

We have been here 3 years and we are so ready to move. We are moving to VA from PA in June which is much closer to home. I look forward to it so much! We’ve had enough of the cold and the snow and the town we are in has NOTHING to do 🙂

I moved to a geographical location (about thirty miles east of Orange County, CA) that I wasn’t crazy about for a guy eight years ago (now my husband of 5 years). I still don’t like it- it’s hot as hell, there’s zero culture, and the restaurants suck. That being said, we were able to buy a house three times the size of what we could afford in LA or the OC, I’ve made friends, and I love where I work. Nowhere will ever be perfect! You’ve just got to make the best of where you’re at.

I thought Tampa would be temporary for me as well but 6 years later….and it’s definitely home now. I really would love to get more involved in the blogging networking around the area any suggestions for me? Thanks girl I appreciate it!

I’ve been in LA for about 4 1/2 years now, but I’ll be saying goodbye in a couple short months and moving to Wisconsin (for my husband’s job). There are so many things I’m going to miss. And yet at the same time, so many reasons I can’t wait to move! It’s very sad and exciting at the same time. All sorts of emotions!

14 Tiffany @ The Chi-Athlete March 14, 2014 at 5:41 am

Well, welcome home, huh? Hehe!

I have been living in Chicago for 10 months! W-O-W. I believe that it feels like it has been longer, though…maybe because it’s home. 🙂

Happy 3 year Tampa-versary! This summer will be 10 years since I’ve lived in Tallahassee. NO ONE expected me to stick around this long, especially me. But I love this little town <3

I’ve been in Asheville for over 10 years and it was a “temporary” move at first! I thought I’d stay 2 years and head BACK to Florida, but I fell in love with this place!

We moved an hour and a half away around Thanksgiving. I don’t really know which city I like best as long as I am with my hubby.

Crazy b/c I feel like you just started at your desk job. I can’t believe it’s been a year! I know the feeling of loving Orlando and leaving it for Tampa too. We should take a day trip together and just try to go to all of our favorite Orlando spots. That would be exhausting. And awesome. 😉

I live in a quiet little town near PIttsburgh. I was born and raised here as well as my husband. My dream is to move to Orlando, or just Florida in general. If it wasn’t for my great career in state government and our awesome house, I would have moved to Florida a long time ago. But now it’s more like a retirement dream/goal 🙂

We’ve lived in our current city for 9 years…….. that went fast! together we left canada and all our friends and family to move to Southern california, 12 years ago! Where does time go? we lived in 1 city for 3 years and our city for 9 and I don’t see us moving for a very long time.

24 Cheri @ Overactive Blogger March 14, 2014 at 12:49 pm

I love that it all worked out! I’ve only done the big move for a boy once – and it didn’t work out. At the time, I was like MOTHER EFF, but it really was for the best – it ended up being where I would meet my future husband!

I have lived in Chattanooga, TN for the last 10 years. Even though I’ve lived here that long, and I like it a lot; it will never be “home” to me. I lived most of my life in the Mississippi Delta, and that’s my true home!

27 Jessica March 15, 2014 at 9:06 am

I love this!! So glad you came to that first swim practice. Our group wouldn’t be the same without you!

28 Chelsea @ Designs on Dinner March 15, 2014 at 12:24 pm

My husband and I moved from Green Bay to Stevens Point (central Wisconsin) last October. Basically, we’ve only been here for the crappy weather, so I can’t wait until the sun comes out and I get to explore all the parks and trails around us!

Time does fly! We thought moving from Nebraska to California would be a “try it out” move of a couple years. Seven years later, and there’s no plans on going back in sight! I love the Bay Area!

I moved to Houston from Pennsylvania almost 5 years ago. Originally just planned on staying here for grad school, but I met a great guy and got an amazing job. We recently moved into the suburbs and a lot of my friends no longer live close so I need to branch out and meet some new people out where I am.
