Fitting my run in

by Meghann on July 2, 2013

When I enthusiastically said “YES!” to the Hilton HHonors Great Getaway adventure a couple of months ago, I knew I would need to squeeze in a long training run while I was adventuring it up in Orlando. I’m no stranger to running while on vacation (I’ve even done an 18 mile training run while traveling in Tallahassee), so I was up for the challenge (and additional adventure of running somewhere new).

After I got back to the hotel after dinner on Saturday night, I hopped on the computer and mapped out my route for the following morning using DailyMile. I was aiming for a 6-8 mile route that would be easy to remember.

I actually used a mix of DailyMile and Google Maps to find my route. I started creating one route when I realized I wasn’t sure if the roads I were choosing had sidewalks or not. Thanks to Google Maps, I realized they didn’t. I had to start from scratch and found a route that was 100% sidewalk and even made a nice big loop around the area.

What do you use to map your running routes?

If you ever stay at Hilton Grand Vacations at Sea World, and need an 8 mile route, I saved a copy on DailyMile (here). The route takes you up International Dr, then back down Turkey Lake Road. It’s fairly shaded on the International Dr side and quiet on the Turkey Lake side. It was a nice, enjoyable loop.

I set my alarm for 6:15 with a goal of getting out the door at 6:30. The sun was still rising when I left and it wasn’t unbearably hot just yet.

I’ve run everywhere over Orlando, but this was my first time running down International Drive. It’s the tourist central area of Orlando that most locals avoid at all cost. At night the traffic is crazy and the sidewalks are crammed with people. At 6:30 in the morning, it was quiet and peaceful. I saw a couple of other runners out and about, but not much else.

I was surprised how good I felt out there. I wish I could run a different route every weekend for training, it would make the miles go by so much faster. I thought for sure my legs would be sore after all the walking and horseback riding we did yesterday, but my legs felt fine. I even managed to keep a fairly decent 9:00 min/mile pace.

I finished up my run just before 8:00, which gave me plenty of time to shower and pack before meeting the #HHGetaway gang one last time for breakfast (I stopped at the hotel store for Powerade before the shower).

I had so much fun getting to know Lisa and Karissa this trip! Always a pleasure to get to know other bloggers!

We kept breakfast casual and got sandwiches to go from the deli. I had a bacon, egg, and cheese croissant with a fruit cup on the side.

Then it was time to hop in my town car and return to reality.

I LOVED being home by noon on Sunday. It gave me time to relax and hang with the hubby and pups for the week started again.

Thanks again to Hilton HHonors and Hilton Grand Vacations for an amazing weekend getaway!
