Rocketman, Movies, and a Book

by Meghann on May 2, 2013

Guess what I’m doing this weekend?!

It’s Rocketman time!

I feel like I registered for this triathlon ages ago. It’s one of those races I’ve been talking with my brother about forever. We’re both really excited about this one. Not only is it a race that takes place in our hometown (which also makes it my first east coast triathlon), but it has a really cool bike course that takes you on a never-before-seen tour of Kennedy Space Center. You can read more about Rocketman HERE.

I’m doing the “Classic” distance which is essentially a sprint triathlon with a 33 mile bike attached to it. This is really just something fun to do before I dive into Ironman Florida training in two weeks.

It’s been an interesting ride with Rocketman. The organizer behind the race has definitely been a character. Like this email he sent stating Rocketman might be a “one-off” and that we should encourage our friends to register.

Good evening triathletes, runners and friends — In our planning with the US Fish & Wildlife Service, they are recommending our Rocketman Florida Triathlon as a one-time permit. NASA/KSC has approved the course on their property but the FWS has final say. If you have entered our Rocketman, GREAT!! If not spread the word and tell your friends to get onboard at There are also great opportunities for relay teams for our friends not into the whole TRI. As they say, we may never pass this way again… The best from your Friends at Smooth Running!

I’ve never had a race push the “This might be the only one, so register now!” approach, but whatever works for them. πŸ˜‰

Luckily the Rocketman team did confirm they got their permit and the race is on. The team puts on other great events in the area and I have faith this one will be no different. My fingers are crossed. πŸ™‚

At least the medal looks cool.

And I got a new tri kit for the occasion.

It was time to retire my old one-piece and try a two piece out. I worked the St. Anthony’s expo last weekend and this Pearl Izumi kit was staring me down from across the tent. How could I NOT buy it? I had actually been eyeing it online, so the fact that it was there was fate, right? Unfortunately I haven’t had time to take the kit in the water yet, but I did wear the shorts on a trainer ride and the top on a run and both felt pretty good. We’ll see what happens on race day!

My bags are packed, my bike is shiny, and my legs are itching to race! Can’t wait to kick of triathlon season with a bang!

In other news, Derek and I watched two great movies this week. Both were a bit of a tearjerker.

Silver Linings Playbook

Yep, Jennifer Lawrence totally deserved that Oscar. I thought Bradley Cooper was great, too. This was completely different from any other role I’ve seen him play and i thought he nailed it. Great, great movie.

The Impossible

If you haven’t read about the real family behind this incredible true story, I suggest you check it out HERE. I cried more than once during the movie and, if I didn’t know ahead of time that there was a happy ending, I would never have expected it. Some of the special effects when the tsunami hit are pretty brutal, so be warned.

I also started a new book. My book club selected The Paris Wife as our book for May.

I’ll be honest. I almost fell asleep on the way to work listening to this book. Yawn. However, I’m blaming that on the fact that it was early and I haven’t had a chance to really sink my teeth into it yet. Everyone raves about it, so I have faith it will pick up.

Seen any good movies lately?

Good luck on your tri!

I haven’t seen a movie in ages, and I was a little turned off on Silver Linings Playbook because I read some negative reviews of it when it first came out. Of course, that was before the Oscars, so I wonder if those reviewers are kicking themselves now? Maybe I’ll give it a shot if I can convince myself to be in a “crying mood”.

Stick with The Paris Wife — I really quite enjoyed it. I hope you do, as well! Good luck with your tri!

My sister and I saw The Impossible in December and we both thought it was amazing. It’s one of those ‘everyone should have to see it’ kind of movies.

That’s one of the more unique medals I’ve seen out there–very cool! Sounds like the Rocketman should be a great race. I love racing in unique places, so the Space Center sounds like an awesome time to me. I haven’t really watched any movies lately, but I really want to go see Jurassic Park in IMAX 3D. Good luck this weekend!

Good luck on the tri!

I am not surprised you fell asleep to that book….I did not like it all.

And I want to see the Impossible! Thanks for reminding me!

I am so glad someone else didn’t like the book! I tried so hard to get into it b/c I hate giving up on books, but it was just so ehhh.

I’ve just read the Mirror report on the real life story behind The Impossible and have added this to my ‘must-watch-soon’ list. I really enjoy films that are based on true stories and can’t believe that this had a happy ending after watching the tsunami on TV that Boxing Day. Plus Ewan McGregor is starring. Bound to be a winner!

I really never cared for Bradley Cooper until I saw him in Silver Linings Playbook. He and Jennifer Lawrence were both fantastic! I watched Perks of Being a Wallflower last week and loved it. Good luck this weekend!

Good luck at your triathlon this weekend! Can’t wait to read the recap. And I’ve been dying to see Silver Linings Playbook for what feels like years now, hopefully I can rent it soon. Also Amazon has been recommending that book to me for ages. I hope you let us know how it is! Maybe I’ll give into their recommendation one of these days haha

I’ve been wanting to see both of those movies. I have some catching up to do! I found The Paris Wife to be a bit of a yawn as well. I actually didn’t finish it, but I’ve heard so many people rave about it. I think it’s because I was listening to the audiobook, and it’s just not done very well. I’m going to try it again with the actual book!

I agree. I think the girl’s voice is a bit on the boring side, that’s probably what’s throwing me off.

15 Ashley May 3, 2013 at 10:19 am

We’ve been FINALLY getting through the Oscar nominees recently. Silver Linings is next on the list for me! I really enjoyed Argo.

I really enjoyed Argo, too. Any other stand out favorites?

Beasts of the Southern Wild! Totally underrated (can you say that about an Oscar Best Picture nominee? Probably not I guess) and such a pleasant surprise.

I loved Silver Linings Playbook! These days I go into most movies with low expectations, and this one really surprised me. I love Jennifer Lawrence.

Good luck at your race!!!!

I’m currently reading Mindy Kaling’s book “Is Everyone Hanging out Without Me” for the TBLB book club in a few weeks. It is hilarious! And she narrates the audio book, which makes it even funnier, I hear. πŸ™‚

The Paris Wife is a good book, keeping going with it! Do you have an appreciation for Hemingway and the rest of the authors from the Parisian era? That might have something to do with it if it’s hard to relate to.

The Paris Wife has been on my nightstand for a few months now…my mom gave it to me to read and said that it starts off slow, but picks up once you get into it. I’m excited to start reading it! Good luck on the Rocketman!

If the Paris Wife doesn’t work for you as an audio book, maybe try the printed version? I do think some books are better read than they are listened to.

Aww, I went to the expo – too bad I didn’t see you! Our friends did the tri. We were in St. Pete for a wedding.

Good luck this weekend! πŸ™‚

You should read Silver Linings Playbook. I loved the book so much more than the movie. I thought it was strange how they included details from the book but changed them slightly for the movie. i.e. The song that sets off Pat’s anger outbursts.

28 Jelena@FabLifePhD May 3, 2013 at 6:09 pm

We recently saw Silver linings playbook and we really loved it. I think that Jennifer Lawrence really has a bright future to come. Another movie that we really liked last winter is The life of Pi! I am not a special effect person, but this one is worth seeing in 3D

Man that Rocketman looks fun! Plus I’m just plain jealous that you’re doing tri’s already…I shiver just thinking about getting in the water up here, and my first tri is over a month away. Good luck and enjoy the race as it may not happen again haha…definitely a unique angle πŸ˜‰

Rocket man sounds great! I live the new kit. It’s very cute.

I usually only watch Rom Com’s so I’ll spare you my list.

I read the paris wife… Didn’t love it. Just sort of got through it.

How did you find/start your book club?
