Rocketman, Movies, and a Book

by Meghann on May 2, 2013

Guess what I’m doing this weekend?!

It’s Rocketman time!

I feel like I registered for this triathlon ages ago. It’s one of those races I’ve been talking with my brother about forever. We’re both really excited about this one. Not only is it a race that takes place in our hometown (which also makes it my first east coast triathlon), but it has a really cool bike course that takes you on a never-before-seen tour of Kennedy Space Center. You can read more about Rocketman HERE.

I’m doing the “Classic” distance which is essentially a sprint triathlon with a 33 mile bike attached to it. This is really just something fun to do before I dive into Ironman Florida training in two weeks.

It’s been an interesting ride with Rocketman. The organizer behind the race has definitely been a character. Like this email he sent stating Rocketman might be a “one-off” and that we should encourage our friends to register.

Good evening triathletes, runners and friends — In our planning with the US Fish & Wildlife Service, they are recommending our Rocketman Florida Triathlon as a one-time permit. NASA/KSC has approved the course on their property but the FWS has final say. If you have entered our Rocketman, GREAT!! If not spread the word and tell your friends to get onboard at There are also great opportunities for relay teams for our friends not into the whole TRI. As they say, we may never pass this way again… The best from your Friends at Smooth Running!

I’ve never had a race push the “This might be the only one, so register now!” approach, but whatever works for them. 😉

Luckily the Rocketman team did confirm they got their permit and the race is on. The team puts on other great events in the area and I have faith this one will be no different. My fingers are crossed. 🙂

At least the medal looks cool.

And I got a new tri kit for the occasion.

It was time to retire my old one-piece and try a two piece out. I worked the St. Anthony’s expo last weekend and this Pearl Izumi kit was staring me down from across the tent. How could I NOT buy it? I had actually been eyeing it online, so the fact that it was there was fate, right? Unfortunately I haven’t had time to take the kit in the water yet, but I did wear the shorts on a trainer ride and the top on a run and both felt pretty good. We’ll see what happens on race day!

My bags are packed, my bike is shiny, and my legs are itching to race! Can’t wait to kick of triathlon season with a bang!

In other news, Derek and I watched two great movies this week. Both were a bit of a tearjerker.

Silver Linings Playbook

Yep, Jennifer Lawrence totally deserved that Oscar. I thought Bradley Cooper was great, too. This was completely different from any other role I’ve seen him play and i thought he nailed it. Great, great movie.

The Impossible

If you haven’t read about the real family behind this incredible true story, I suggest you check it out HERE. I cried more than once during the movie and, if I didn’t know ahead of time that there was a happy ending, I would never have expected it. Some of the special effects when the tsunami hit are pretty brutal, so be warned.

I also started a new book. My book club selected The Paris Wife as our book for May.

I’ll be honest. I almost fell asleep on the way to work listening to this book. Yawn. However, I’m blaming that on the fact that it was early and I haven’t had a chance to really sink my teeth into it yet. Everyone raves about it, so I have faith it will pick up.

Seen any good movies lately?
