Saddle time with the siblings

I had another stellar cycling Saturday thanks to these two crazy kids.


On Thursday my little brother called and asked if I was interested in meeting him and Kelly for a ride on Saturday morning. I live in Tampa and they both live in the outskirts of Orlando, but there’s a great trail we all love that’s exactly halfway between us (equally an hour from me and an hour from them). At first I was a bit hesitant of driving the hour to meet them so early on a Saturday morning (we started our ride at 8), but the fact that I had not seen either of my siblings since my wedding on January 5th and that I missed them both terribly (even though we talk on the phone almost every day), meant I couldn’t turn down the chance of spending a couple of hours with two of my best friends.

So I said yes and set my alarm for the really not-so-terrible time of 6:15am on a Saturday. I even gave myself a little extra time so I could try the four ingredient greek yogurt pancakes that have been taking over Pinterest lately. O.M.G. those babies were good. I used the new Pear Chobani Greek Yogurt and made pear flavored pancakes. They were super easy to make (less than 5 minutes from start to finish) and full of so much flavor. I can’t wait to try this recipe with other Chobani flavors! The sky is really the limit here.

When I arrived at the trailhead, I was greeted by these two twinsies.


Apparently I missed the Miami 70.3 race shirt memo. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I should note that they’re so much smarter than I am to wear different clothes to the trailhead and on the way home. Biking shorts are NOT comfortable and I was *this close* to going commando about halfway through my hour trip home. *Mental note* always bring an extra pair of clothes when driving more than 30 minutes for a bike ride.

We geared up and headed out for our ride.


Ben wanted to do 50 miles and Kelly wanted to ride 30, so we compromised on a solid 40. The trail we were on would take us all the way to Clermont if we let it, so we just went 20 miles out and 20 miles back. No worries of getting lost or dealing with any traffic.

It was a great day to ride. There was a light cloud coverage, but the humidity remained low and the temps bearable. I loved having the chance to catch up with my siblings. All three of us recently bought new bikes, so we were comparing notes and new features.


We stopped at mile 20 and I tried an AppleApple GoGo Squeez.


It was just applesauce in a squeeze pouch packaging. They were handing out free samples at the Gasparilla Expo yesterday and I thought they would be an easy snack to throw in my back pocket for long rides. It really was a nice mid-ride treat (I <3 applesauce!) and a lot tastier than a regular ole gu.

I also nibbled on a package of Blueberry Pomegrante Gu Chomps on the ride.


On the way back we picked up the pace and practiced riding in a line for a few miles. We also made a new friend.

We also saw a ton of turtles and birds. Nothing quite like riding through the middle of Florida’s wetlands!

I can’t believe I almost turned down a long ride with my siblings this morning because of the hour drive it would take to meet them. Seriously, that hour drive was MORE than worth it to get to spend three hours with two of my favorite people. I’m so lucky to have two amazing people in my life who are constantly inspiring me to reach new goals and never question me for being me.


Yes, we’re as corny in real life as we are on the blog and we never take that corniness for granted for a second.

We were already discussing ways to fit in group training rides when we start hitting 100+ mile rides when training for Ironman Florida. Gulp. I still can’t believe we’re going to hit that high of mileage. I’m sure it’s like training for a marathon – one day you’re in awe you’ll be hitting double digits while training and the next 12 miles feels short. Training for an endurance race definitely messes with your mind on what’s a short and long distance. For instance, 40 miles felt loooong today, but close to October it will – hopefully! – feel like nothing.


Well, that’s the plan anyway. ๐Ÿ™‚

We finished just under three hours and I had to say good-bye to my siblings, but not before giving my sister her gift.


I bought her a pink chevron BAMR Band the other week. Now we’re chevron sistas!

I stopped at Panera on the way home and killed a you-pick-2 combo made up of the chicken stew and spinach power salad.


Forget killed… I freakin’ demolished it.


Yum. Yum. Yum.

Time to lay on the couch and be lazy the rest of the day.

Great job on the ride! I noticed your siblings both have Specialized, and wanted to give you a hard time for getting something different. Only because I also have a Specialized so it holds a special place in my heart.

Haha 40 sounds like a lot, but I’m sure it’s nice and flat in FL! That’s so great that you got to spend the time with your siblings, I’ve found that as I get older I learn to appreciate my brothers so much more

I hear you on not sitting around in a wet, stinky chamois. It’s right up there with bring a pair of comfy shoes to wear after a 20-mile run.

Holy cow, a gator! I would have screamed, probably.

The pancakes are also realllllly good if you add fresh fruit (like blueberries and strawberries) to the mix before you cook them. And did you make them using coconut oil? I swear it makes them taste like funnel cakes. Can you tell I am just slightly obsessed?

Awesome. Sounds like the new bikes are treating everyone well. I just picked my new tri bike up today. However, I’m in NY so not sure how soon I’ll get to ride it outdoors. Jealous! Enjoy!

You are so lucky to be able to do that with your siblings! My only sister is tens of thousands of kilometers away (she’s in Canada and I’m in Australia). Savour that time cause you never know where life will take you!
