My First WOD

by Meghann on October 8, 2012

Guess what? I survived my first WOD today!

WOD = CrossFit Workout of the Day

CrossFit is something I’ve been meaning to try for a while now. To be honest, everyone I know that has tried CrossFit has LOVED it and usually has nothing but awesome things to say about it. Their enthusiasm is enough to get me on board! Plus, it gives results – those same friends now have killer arms and look STRONG and fit. I want to have killer arms and look strong and fit too!

But, as much as I’ve been wanting to try it, my wallet hasn’t been as enthused about the idea. CrossFIT is NOT cheap (nor are any other specialty fitness classes or gyms for that matter). So I held back. I trained for my upcoming 70.3, kept up with some strength training at my Y, and started to save. My goal was to join after my 70.3 at the end of the month, but I grew a little impatient and decided to reach out a little early.

I’m just going to put this out there – I’m the stereotypical bride who wants to look her best at her wedding, and I believe CrossFit will help me reach that goal. I’m not ashamed of that fact, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to look your best on one of the biggest days of your life, but it is what it is. And I was completely up front with that fact when I reached out to my local CrossFit box last week.

And can I say how excited I am that there’s a box on my side of town? Sometimes I feel like all the cool fitness stuff is completely on the other side of town, but this box is in MY neck of the woods and NOT 30 minutes away. I love South Tampa, but we need more cool stuff over here too. I think proximity of the box will alleviate a lot of excuses in the future and I’ll be that much more likely to stick with it.

So I found my local box’s website and read just about every piece of info they had. Since I knew nothing about CrossFit (and had no idea where to start or how the classes went) I decided to reach out via email on where to begin.

I’m sorry for the random email, but I was looking for more info on the website and decided emailing the source directly might be a little easier. I’m thinking about starting CrossFit in the next couple of weeks (I’m the cliche bride-to-be who wants to get in shape for her wedding day), but was a little confused with how to actually start. I saw that I would be required to take an intro class, but didn’t see what time the class/session was given. Help?

The owner, Paula, was prompt in her response.

That’s what we’re here for. We have 2 ways to try the group classes if that’s what you’re interested in. If you’re familiar with CrossFit and the movements we offer a 1 Week Free Trial to see how you like the classes. If someone isn’t familiar I offer a complimentary private introduction (by appt) where I go over CF, your goals, exercise history and we go through a CF workout tailored to your current fitness level to determine the best way for you to begin. If you’re interested in private training we also start with the intro.

Please let me know if you’d like to set up an Intro or if you’re familiar with CF and the movements arrive 5 to 10 min prior to any regularly schedule Open class to give it a try.

Since I was a CrossFit newbie, I decided to take Paula up on the complimentary private introduction, and I’m so glad I did. It ended up being the perfect introduction to CrossFit. I set an appointment at met Paula at the box this afternoon.

We started with a questionaire about my current activity level, then Paula introduced me to the WOD board.

That’s actually not the workout I did, she created one that was a little easier to give me a taste of what a typical workout would be.

The workout was divided into three parts: warm-up, skill set, and WOD. The warm-up was meant to get the blood pumping, the skill set was meant to review the skills for the WOD, and the WOD was a combination of thrusters, swings, and vertical climb (2-3 RFT = rounds for time).

I’ll admit, I went in a little cocky. The workout seemed so small went it was written out, clearly I could handle this. 2-3 RFT? Please, I could 3 and still feel good. Ha! I was wrong!

I was already feeling sweaty and worked after the warm–up she put me through. Then we got to the thrusters and swings, and she decided to up my weight. I started the WOD and all that cockiness disappeared. After one round, I was breathing heavy and sweating hard. I needed a small break before the second, but kept at it. Then I finished the second round and Paula asked if I wanted to do the third. I wanted to do it – I wanted to prove I could push myself – but I also wanted to catch my breath, I wanted my heart rate to come back down, and I wanted to take a break. I told her I was good with two.

That little workout was enough to sell me. If I felt like this after one mini session, can you imagine how exhausted I’d feel after a real class? Sign me up!

Thankfully Paula offered me a new student deal – buy one month, get one free. Still a little pricey, but better than paying full price! I handed over my credit card and am happy to report that I now have unlimited access to my new box until December. Sweet!

So we’ll see. I’m hoping to do CrossFit three times a week from now until the end of the month. After that I’ll play it by ear. I’m still very, very new to this CrossFit thing so just consider this day one. Who knows? I may hate it by the time my months are up and want out or I might love it and never want to leave. I’m willing to see where this new adventure takes me.

Have you ever tried CrossFit? What did you think?

After my CrossFit introduction, I came home and had a serving of nuts with Cheerios.

And had a beer while Derek and I prepped dinner.

We made fajitas!

Steak fajitas with onions, spinach, feta, and guacamole.

Roasted broccoli on the side.

I updated the wedding page! Sweetheart or Head table ?

Wedding: Sweetheart or Head Table?

October 8, 2012

Here’s something I never really considered until I started planning my own wedding: should the bride and groom sit at a sweetheart table or a head table at the reception? In my humble opinion, either option is perfectly acceptable and it really comes down to the personal decision of the bride and groom. Both have more »
