Something Clicked

Something clicked with the bike this morning.

After months of forgetting I have a bike, telling myself i need to ride my bike, and only going on rides when friends invite me on them, I woke up with the sudden urge to go for a ride. There was no need to talk myself into it, no friends counting on me to show up, and no training plan to stick with, I simply wanted to ride.


And you know what? I had fun. Something clicked. All of my long rides from last year came rushing back to me and I remembered how fun bike rides can be.


Now I just have to remember this feeling to keep it up. ๐Ÿ™‚

I took my time getting to the bike trail. I didn’t feel as great of a need to rush out the door as I do with running. I pressed snooze more than once, watched some of last night’s opening ceremonies (p.s. I liked the show! I thought the journey through London’s history was very well done, it kept me interested.), and had breakfast.


Two pieces of whole wheat toast with almond butter, pumpkin butter, ground flax seed, walnuts, and raspberries.


Then it was bike time.

I set out with 30 miles in mind, and was surprised how quickly the 15 mile turn around point came. The trail was packed with people and I never felt alone.


Which can be a good thing and a bad thing. Like when I left one foot clipped in at a stop light, lost my balance, and fell. Whoops. That was embarrassing. I made it all the way to my car before I noticed the scratches on the back of my leg. Looks like the chain got me on the way down.


It took me just under 2 hours to cover all 30 miles (including a stop to refill my water bottle on the way back). When I returned to the car, I put my bike up, did a quick shoe change, and headed out for a quick 2 mile run.


The run almost didn’t happen. It was hot and I knew the run would be hell in the mid-day heat. I wanted to bail, but kept thinking about Miami 70.3 and how i need to start picking up my workouts in preparation for it. I told myself that it was only 2 miles and if it was really that bad, I could turn around a half mile in and be happy with it.

Turns out it wasn’t that bad. The two miles went quickly and I even managed to keep an 8:17ish pace through both. Yes, it was only 2 miles, but I’m darn proud of those 2 miles!

After the run, I rushed home and had a post-brick smoothie.

Totally hit the spot.

Lunch wasn’t too far behind. I had some of last night’s leftovers with some cheesy bread.


I got lost in a book this afternoon.


When thirty-year-old English teacher Anna Emerson is offered a job tutoring T.J. Callahan at his family’s summer rental in the Maldives, she accepts without hesitation; a working vacation on a tropical island trumps the library any day.

T.J. Callahan has no desire to leave town, not that anyone asked him. He’s almost seventeen and if having cancer wasn’t bad enough, now he has to spend his first summer in remission with his family – and a stack of overdue assignments – instead of his friends.

Anna and T.J. are en route to join T.J.’s family in the Maldives when the pilot of their seaplane suffers a fatal heart attack and crash-lands in the Indian Ocean. Adrift in shark-infested waters, their life jackets keep them afloat until they make it to the shore of an uninhabited island. Now Anna and T.J. just want to survive and they must work together to obtain water, food, fire, and shelter. Their basic needs might be met but as the days turn to weeks, and then months, the castaways encounter plenty of other obstacles, including violent tropical storms, the many dangers lurking in the sea, and the possibility that T.J.’s cancer could return. As T.J. celebrates yet another birthday on the island, Anna begins to wonder if the biggest challenge of all might be living with a boy who is gradually becoming a man.

Honestly, not something I would have normally picked up (stranded on a desert island? crazy age difference in characters?), but it came highly recommended by my friend Jackie and I trust her taste. I downloaded it around lunchtime and couldn’t put it down. It’s a quick read (I’m already halfway through) and a definite page turner. The author develops the love story in a way that isn’t creepy and I actually find myself rooting for the two characters to make it work. If you’re looking for a good beach read, I’d highly recommend it.

Derek and I were in the mood for Thai for dinner.


I ordered some sort of veggie and tofu dish.


It was good, but I found myself stealing bites of Derek’s pad thai and wishing I had ordered the same. Next time I will. ๐Ÿ™‚

What? Chocolates? Where’s my fortune cookie?!


We stopped at Greenwise on the way home and opted to split the yo yo cookie for dessert.


Whoa. That sucker was rich. Good, but rich.

I think I’m going to get lost in my book again. (crossing my fingers they get off the island soon!)

Get Your Glow-ga On!

Last night the local Lululemon store hosted their first Glow Yoga Party at Curtis Hixon Park. Obviously, I got into it. ๐Ÿ™‚ What is Glow Yoga? Well, basically it’s yoga at night with glow sticks.
