Good Morning!

I owe you guys a follow-up post on the MOTOACTV GPS watch I reviewed a couple of Fridays ago. I’ve been using the MOTOACTV exclusively on my runs since that initial post and I definitely have more opinions now than I did before. I still stand by most of my initial thoughts (stated after just one run), but some of quirks of the watch have started to make themselves known. (Everything has flaws, right?)

For starters, I really love how you can toggle between screens during the run to review live data of mile splits, the GPS map, and other information.


However, what I really dislike is that you can’t review that same data while the MOTOACTV is paused. Once you pause the MOTOACTV, your only option is re-starting the workout or ending it. I didn’t realize this would be a problem until I started running more with the watch. Apparently I have a habit of wanting to review my splits at stop lights or water stops and not being able to do so while the device is paused drives me bonkers for some reason.

Another thing I noticed is that the mileage tracked on the watch is off.


I know the routes around my neighborhood backwards and forwards. I know that when I reach a certain stop sign that I am exactly 1 mile from my house and when I reach the water fountain I’m 3. However, the MOTOACTV is telling me something completely different. Now the stop sign is .85 miles from my house and the water fountain is 2.80. At first I thought it was error on my part, but the MOTOACTV is consistently off mark from I’m expecting.

Granted, most of those distances I know are based off of my Garmin. The MOTOACTV could be right on target, while the Garmin is off. Who knows. I just know that it’s annoying me since I’m not sure what to expect on each run now

And with two cons, I thought I’d throw in a pro – I really do enjoy the fact that the MOTOACTV uses the same charger as my cellphone. This means I can use my car charger on the way to my runs if I need to.


There are still a few more features I need to test with the MOTOACTV. It’s still a new toy and the new toy novelty hasn’t worn off yet. I’ll return with another review in a couple of weeks with some more thoughts on the device and check-in on whether I’ll stick with the watch full time. We’ll see. ๐Ÿ™‚

The MOTOACTV and I went for a 5 mile run this morning. I did a wide loop of the neighborhood and did the Tone it Up Slim Without the Gym workout when I returned.


Breakfast featured one of my Whole Foods mangoes (I’m giving a case away HERE!) as a “pizza” topper.


The “pizza” crust was a pita, the sauce was honey peanut butter, and the toppings were mango, walnuts, and raisins. I toasted it all under the broiler to give it a little crisp – yum!


Pizza in the morning… Pizza in the evening… Pizza at suppertime. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Pizza is good anytime.

My Garmin is off on occasion (only really near my apartment) and I’m guessing it has to do with obstructed satellite signal? The other day I ran down the block and my watch flashed that I’d run a mile in 2:25. I mean I’ll take it but I’m pretty sure that wasn’t accurate :P. Maybe the MOTOACTV doesn’t connect well in your area?

That distance discrepancy would drive me crazy!! Haha. Maybe try checking the distance on Map My Run, it’s pretty accurate if you tell it to follow paths

Oh my gosh. That breakfast pizza looks BEYOND amazing. I’m definitely going to have to try something like that sometime!

I know that my Garmin has been off at times as well, but usually that’s when it’s struggling to get/maintain a satellite signal. I agree with what Katie said — whenever I’m not sure about what my Garmin is telling me, I my route and edit my Garmin stats accordingly. It doesn’t usually modify my individual mile splits but it does affect my overall pacing on Garmin Connect when I do that.

Did you do the entire circuit 3 times? I did it this morning and I was surprised how long it took me! It’s amazing how sore the TIU exercises can make you with low weight. I’ve been pleasantly surprised… and sore… lol

Comparing the distance of 1 gps watch to another gps watch is not the best method. Have you mapped the course another way say with mapmyrun, gmapspedometer, or your car if the route is on roads? My garmin is consistently different from my friend’s garmin running together…not exactly the most accurate devise, great thing to estimate with and use as a tool but not the 100% most accurate reading.

100% agree with you here. My only concern is how great of a difference the two read (.2+) and how consistent the reading is.

Ugh I hate not knowing! My Garmin was consistently about .1 miles ahead on my race this past Sunday, and I wasn’t sure if it was the signs that were wrong or my signal. Afterwards, it said I ran 13.28….hmmm

But did you wear the garmin during the Pig? Mine measured like 26.6-ish for the Pig. And those courses are all certified and measured and stuff. So I wouldn’t doubt that our garmins are off a little. I didn’t zigzag THAT much on the course!

I did wear my Garmin and in my photo of it says 26.39 – mine are never spot on for races.
