A Clean Deal

by Meghann on January 30, 2012

I’ve taken advantage of group food deals, fitness deals, and travels deals, but I think I just discovered the group deal that trumps them all – house cleaning deals.

Screen shot 2012-01-30 at 11.12.15 AM.png

Come to mama! ๐Ÿ˜‰

It’s no secret that Derek and I are not the tidiest couple of the block. Not even close.

Before I met Derek, I had dreams of falling in love with a neat freak who would keep the house in spotless condition and never ask for a lick of help. He would be the one obsessed with cleaning and I would be the one obsessed with cooking. Even trade-off, right?

But, alas, we never know who our dream guy will be until we meet him. I fell in love with Derek, who is as messy as I am (even though he refuses to admit it). We try our best to keep the house in good shape, but we never come close to keeping up with it. We could be better at doing the dishes in a timely manner or putting our shoes away when we come home, but what we really struggle with is the stuff that needs to be done ‘every so often‘ like cleaning the tub or scrubbing the baseboards. Those tasks go from ‘every so often’ to ‘only-once-in-the-year-since-I’ve-moved-here’ in a heart beat. Please tell me I am not alone!

I purchased the Eversave deal for a house cleaning months ago. Even at the Eversave rate, it was still a bit of a splurge, but so worth it. The crew was here for a couple of hours this morning and got everything that needed to be done in lightening speed. They mopped, they dusted, they scrubbed, and they cleaned things I’m pretty sure had not been cleaned in the year that I’ve lived here. It was awesome.

IMG_6608.JPG

Now the house smells great and looks so fresh and clean. By far the best deal I’ve ever spent money on and worth every penny. I’ll be sure to be on the lookout for similar house cleaning deals in the future and save them up for when we have friends or family visitors in town.

What’s your favorite group deal you’ve ever purchased?

I almost felt guilty making lunch in the kitchen after the crew left, but it was great inspiration to re-scrub the counters down once I was done eating.

IMG_6574.JPG

Yes, this plate of greens and eggs looks like a mess, but I promise it was good.

IMG_6598.JPG

A bed of romaine lettuce topped with mushrooms, two scrambled eggs seasoned with fresh dill, parmesan cheese, blue cheese, lima beans, and walnuts.

IMG_6601.JPG

I’m not sure why I feel the need to constantly keep adding things to salads when I make them, they just never seem complete. This one was originally suppose to be eggs on top of lettuce, but it looked so bare. I had to hit the pantry, fridge, and freezer until I was happy with my choices. The end result was a random mix, but a very filling random mix.

Especially when paired with a applesauce for dessert.

IMG_6589.JPG

Gotta love the sauce.

In computer news.. taking apart the MacBook Pro to install the new memory is a little more difficult that originally assumed. I need to track down a mini screw driver, but luckily the speed seems to have picked back up (for now). Anyone know where I can find one? An eyeglass kit or something? hmmm….

I actually bought a similar deal today from the deal site near me! So funny. I am SO excited to have them come clean… our house really needs a good scrub!

I just went to the bets photography course on Saturday I purchased through Groupon, $98 but a $280 value and it was awesome! Now to find the next course on a Groupon too ๐Ÿ˜‰

I think the Macbook Pro uses a Phillips Head #00 screwdriver — you can probably find a little kit with screwdrivers that small at any hardware store. Drugstores probably have them too.

I would LOVE a cleaning service but considering I work from home, justifying that one is kind of hard. Both to myself and my husband!

Oh my gosh I am sooo jealous. Having house cleaners is definitely at the top of my want list of I can ever afford it. We’re okay at doing everyday kind of cleaning but we never clean te bathrooms, especially our shower, rarely vacuum the stairs, and NEVER clean the baseboards!

Luckily, I live in a pretty small apartment, so cleaning my entire place probably takes an hour. I give it a good cleaning about once every two weeks—though when I move into a bigger place, this might be a deal I need to be on the lookout for!

I wish we could find a deal like this! I did, in fact, find a ‘neat freak’ guy, but he’s an ‘only when time allows’ sort of neat freak. So unfortunately for me, law school has distracted him lately from scrubbing. Back when he had more time, and we had separate apartments, he would reorganize and clean my apartment all the time. I would not have gotten my deposit back without him!
But now, we have 2 (dirty!) dogs and 8 bikes in a not-huge townhouse. And since I’m not terrible clean by nature, it’s been getting away from us.

Having spent all of yesterday cleaning my house, including the many “I haven’t touched this since I moved in” areas, I have a new respect for professional house cleaners. And also a new interest in a house cleaning coupon.

Keeping a cleaner house comes with time… and a little effort/organization. You’ll get there! Things that have helped me:

“If you are going to put it down, put it away.” I repeat this to myself at least 5 times a day, but I’m getting better with the clutter!

“Do one load of dishes and laundry a day.” This translates into a cleaner than average kitchen and bedroom. It sort of reduces the general craziness on a daily basis.

14 Poptartyogini January 30, 2012 at 2:16 pm

I’m a proud member of the sloppy brigade. Especially when it comes to the tub! My mom gives us a session with her cleaning lady every year for our anniversary. My husband and I give it to ourselves for valentines day. That way the tub is scrubbed at least twice a year. There’s NOTHING more romantic than someone else cleaning your house!

I also have a soft spot for having someone clean my house. Not a lot…but sometimes. It just makes everything feel neat and tidy!

17 Danielle Dillard January 30, 2012 at 2:35 pm

My dog is so ridiculously messy that it’s SO hard to keep the house clean. I do deep scrubbings once a week, and basically daily pick-ups. Our backyard is basically dirt since he ruined it and tracks the dirt in constantly. Drives me nuts. I’m keeping on the lookout for cleaning deals!!!

18 Emily January 30, 2012 at 2:37 pm

I bought a house cleaning deal and used it to clean our apt when we left so we wouldn’t have to worry about it.. It was pretty much empty when they cleaned it, they did an amazing job! Way better then I would have done, and we didn’t have to pay any money to the apt complex for leaving a “dirty” apt. We were even in a hurry so they took a few things off our hands so we didn’t have to throw it in the garbage!! Definitely would do it again!

19 Kris@TryingtoTri January 30, 2012 at 2:48 pm

Best group deal I ever got was 50% off at our local running store – we put them towards new shoes!

As for the house cleaning – I really, really hate cleaning my house. I mean really. So after many years of marriage, hubby and I have decided that the amount it costs us is a small price to pay for the stress relief it provides. So worth it!

oh, you have a MacBook Pro. …. the disk is then actually a solid state disk (SSD), and they just fragment over time and get noticeably slower. Not sure if the RAM upgrade will help ya.

Check this — this guy actually bought a different SSD with better behavior over time. Upgrade to latest MacOS which includes TRIM support; that alone might make your SSD faster. Good luck!

I’m a clutter bug. My siblings and my mom are the neat freaks. My Dad is never home enough to make his house a mess lol (such is the life of an oilfield worker)

My apartment is a mess but its mostly just papers and boxes lying around. The essentials (Dishes, laundry, bathroom and floors) are done often. But in my city I have yet to find a good housecleaning deal! Its usually just the rug cleaning coupons out there, which is useless as boobs on a bull for me because we have hardwood.

34 Meghann January 31, 2012 at 10:28 am

boobs on a bull? That’s a new one! And the carpet cleaning ones are useless for me too – our entire place is tile.

35 Carrie January 31, 2012 at 3:29 pm

Lol I cleaned it up! Its actually “T*ts on a bull” but I kept it sort of pg. The saying must be a Canadian farm thing because I heard when I lived out in the Prairies.

36 Talia @ Bite Size Wellness January 30, 2012 at 4:42 pm

37 JessicaE January 30, 2012 at 4:57 pm

I have to be pretty strict with myself about keeping my apartment clean because my husband and I are both a bit cluttery.

It helps to never let things get too bad… do SOME cleaning and/or picking up every single day. Even for just five minutes… once things become disastrously messy/dirty it becomes SO overwhelming to clean… if things are never too bad you are more likely to keep it up.

Like another commenter stated, it also helps me to keep two rules in mind… “If you are setting it down somewhere, just set it down where it belongs, aka, put it away!” and also: “Leave a room they way you found it.” If you started a project in the living room or dinner in the kitchen, put it back the way it was when you are done.

It really does take some self discipline and practice to make having a clean home become a habit. The saying, “it takes 21 days to make a habit” goes for cleaning too. ๐Ÿ˜€

38 Army Amy* January 30, 2012 at 5:50 pm

Maybe I should consider this. My apartment is pretty small, but I’m overwhelmed by the idea of deep cleaning (dusting, running the vaccuum, scrubbing the kitchen and bathroom). I will say, my dad is a neat freak, and it drove my mom crazy. Nothing was ever clean enough for him. In that respect, be glad that Derek isn’t a neat freak!*

I totally get what you mean with the cleaning! Dishes and vacuuming are one thing, but I haven’t cleaned the baseboards or windows in my apartment ever. I think that getting your house cleaned every so often is definitely worth it. A clean space makes more better productivity, less stress, and more peace of mind. And it’s easier to keep it clean than get it clean so you can keep up a bit with it once you get it done. Caitlin at healthy tipping point once wrote a post about a cleaning schedule. For example, vacuum every Wednesday, wash the sheets on Thursdays, clean the bathrooms Fridays, etc. That way you just need to do one thing each day and nothing piles up. Since you, like myself, don’t seem to be a clean freak maybe doing something one day every other week would work well for you.

45 Hilda January 30, 2012 at 10:43 pm

I agree that if you do a little every day and don’t go to bed with dishes in the sink, things won’t get out of hand. Doing a couple loads of wash every few days saves on an ALL day…….day of washing, when you have 10 loads to wash, dry and fold. It really is easier ……a little every day.

46 Vikki January 30, 2012 at 11:41 pm

My recommendation for tub cleaning (I hate doing this too) is to spray down the tub with Scrubbing Bubbles after you shower. Then let it sit for awhile. I usually dry my hair. Then go back and wipe it down with a towel. The scrubbing bubbles will have done most of the work. You might want to rinse and then dry it too. I use the same towel. But it is a super easy method and takes less effort than taking a couple of hours to do the. bathroom. If I do this two days in a row, my tub shines.

gahhhh I hate hate cleaning. And still, I deep clean my house every week hating myself while doing it. The problem is 1) I love a tidy environment and I work from home so I need it 2)I am ashamed people will judge me. Very mature, I know. At the top of my wish list there’s the roomba robot – but it’s pricey and I somehow feel guilty so I keep just *dreaming* about it… Clearly, my hubby is not only messy but doesn’t lift a finger to help me, not even with the dishwasher, and sometimes I wonder “why is it “normal” that he buys a 400โ‚ฌ gadget-y phone, and I can’t find the “guts” to buy that useful robot ??? *sigh* , I’m hopeless ๐Ÿ˜‰

Tubs were my worst nightmares until I discovered the Magic Eraser. I bought a different brand/ version than the widely advertised brand and now my tub gets cleaned in very little time! Try it!

I did try to convince the husband that we should start purchasing a cleaning service once or twice a month. He said: “What are you willing to pay?”. Me “I don’t know. $20/hr, perhaps?”. He said “Deal, when do you want me to start? Saturdays work best for me, and make sure you have some Lemon Pledge.” <- his way of saying we can save that $$ and do it ourselves. :-/
