Three Years Ago

by Meghann on January 18, 2012

Three years ago today I had one too many hurricanes with this guy that I was ‘just friends’ with.

You can read all about that night on this post, but I thought I would share a fun story from that night that didn’t make it on the blog.

That sweet couple we met?

Well, I wasn’t lying – they were sweet and pretty hilarious. The whole night they kept asking if we were a couple and we would respond with the automatic ‘just friends’ remark. They would nod their heads and go ‘suuurrreee you are’ before predicting we would get married one day.

(side note: man, my hair was blonde then)

We all laughed. Derek and I weren’t even officially dating – marriage? They’re funny.

Once my initial drink was empty, I ordered another one, as did my tablemates. They thought it would be fun to continue to refill my drink with one of their extras when I wasn’t looking. My glass always looked like it was half full, so I had no idea how much I was drinking and, without realizing it, I had finished three full glasses of Pat O’Brien Hurricanes in the span of a couple of hours. The rest of the night got a little fuzzy after that.

I do have snapshot memories of kissing Derek that night and hearing the couple exclaim, “See! You guys are sooo getting married!” Nope. Pretty sure that was just the hurricanes talking. Or so I thought. πŸ˜‰

I wonder where that couple is now. I would love to extend an invitation their way to the wedding they predicted before Derek and I did.

And, as luck would have it, you’ll never guess what I found buried in my folder of the photos from that night.

They’re number! Maybe I’ll get to send that invitation after all. πŸ˜‰

Three years ago Derek and I were just friends drinking at a bar and singing at the top of our lungs to songs I can’t remember with people I still can’t place the names of. Three years ago those strangers saw a spark and predicted an engagement that both of us couldn’t see.

Today, we’re planning our wedding.

Crazy how life works out sometimes, right? πŸ˜‰

I was at the gym this morning for a speed session on the treadmill. 6 x .5 @ 8.0 with a .5 rest @6.5 in between. Burn baby, burn.

Cereal made an appearance for breakfast.

  • 1/2 cup Kashi Cinnamon Go Lean Crisp <– just bought it. so good!
  • 1/2 cup Quaker Oatmeal Squares
  • Plain Chobani
  • Walnuts
  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries

Instead of granola, I’ve been topping my cereal bowls with walnuts. It add a nice flavor while still providing that needed crunch. Plus the extra hit of protein and omega-3s doesn’t hurt either. πŸ˜‰

What were you doing three years ago today?

Yeah! Invite them!!! That is such an awesome story. Three years ago today, I was working at Merrill Lynch, feeling extremely annoyed by this loud obnoxious person near me who was CONSTANTLY on the phone with his guy friends all day (who does that?) on conference calls, saying HMPH over and over and over, and laughing hyena laughter. Good thing I have a blog so I can check back on January 2009. Also, I was in a really terrible relationship.

Cute story! I don’t remember exactly what I was doing. My life hasn’t changed much in the last few years (stagnant…. changing that is one of this year’s goals/resolutions), so I’m sure something similar to today – sleeping during the day for my night shift at the hospital πŸ˜‰

11 Susan January 18, 2012 at 10:11 am

Three years ago today I was getting ready for my own wedding- 3/12/09! πŸ™‚ And my husband and I also had a period of time before we dated in which were were “just friends”!

So funny when other people see things you do not. I actually had two best friends in college that were “just friends” and I predicted they would get married. I don’t know why but I always knew they were perfect together. They soon started dating and married shortly after college. They still remind me I predicted the future they never saw.

12 Chelsea January 18, 2012 at 10:11 am

Awh! That would be so cute if that couple showed up at your wedding :)) & to still have their number that many years later!

13 Janine @ThePurpleGiraffe January 18, 2012 at 10:12 am

You TOTALLY have to invite them. That’s awesome. I can 110% relate to this story, except in our case, it was 1 too many scorpion bowls. We were “just friends” too. It was 2004. Now we’ve been married over a year. Something about those drinks at Chinese food restaurants…

A cute story, but really? You just happened to find a napkin that you didn’t know you saved on the 3 year anniversary of this date in the weeks following your engagement? A better story that way, sure, but not believable to me. Admit you saved the napkin because you liked him!

20 Meghann January 18, 2012 at 10:39 am

I did like him! πŸ™‚ But I don’t have the actual napkin. I found a photo of the napkin. I think I took a photo so I wouldn’t lose the number because we spilt something on it. But I swear that I didn’t remember that I had that photo until I was looking through the folder of photos (on my computer) this morning. It was really random.

We actually met in college. We reconnected at a homecoming football game in November 2008 and then met for drinks at Pat O’Briens in January ’09 (after many emails went back and forth). It was a month later when he swept me away to an island getaway (with his family! lol) for Valentine’s Weekend that he admitted he still had feelings for me. It’s actually a long winding road to how we got together. lol

55 Emily January 18, 2012 at 1:40 pm

Nice. I love that you fund their number (or at least, that photo of it!)

Also – Pat O’Briens hurricanes? DELICIOUS and such a bad idea. Lol. I think I had 3 or 4 for breakfast when I was in NOLA to watch my beloved Cincinnati Bearcats play in the Sugar Bowl. The rest of the day was really rough. Good thing they are open on New Years Day though!
