It’s Yonanas!

It’s Yonanas!

IMG_4613.jpg IMG_4615.jpg

Back in November I attended a blog retreat at Dole headquarters where they did a demo of a new frozen banana soft serve machine they were partnering with called Yonanas. I don’t eat bananas, but i fell in love with the demo of the machine. It looked so easy and fast! Once they told me the machine could be used with other frozen fruit besides bananas, I was hooked.

I added Yonanas to my Christmas list this year and was pleasantly surprised when I unwrapped one Christmas morning. Thanks babe! πŸ™‚

I think Derek was just as excited to try out the new machine as I was. We pulled it out this afternoon with some frozen fruit and put it to the test.

It took a while to get the hang of (the machine required more pressure to push down on than we originally thought), but once we figured it out, it was really easy to make the frozen sorbet.

Just frozen mango, a run through the machine, and a mango sorbet was served. It was pretty good too, the taste and texture reminded me of the frozen whole fruit bars you pick up at the store.

Nothing like a cold sweet treat to better the day with. πŸ™‚

Derek’s brother’s girlfriend sent us home with a pretty intense ham bone on Sunday night.

She made a huge ham for their Christmas dinner, but had no plans for the huge ham bone other than the trash. What good is a Christmas ham if you’re not going to make soup with the leftover bone? I politely offered to take the bone off of her hands and purchased a bag of 15 Bean Soup to go with it.

This afternoon I broke the bone in half (it was huge) and saved one half for another batch of soup and dropped the other half in a big pot for dinner tonight.

I added the big bag of beans, the seasoning mix, and 2 cans of vegetable broth + 2 more cans full of water.

The soup came to a boil for 45 minutes, then down to a medium-low for three hours. In the last 30 minutes I added some kale and removed the bone.

Nothing goes better with bean soup than a big batch of cornbread. I followed the recipe on the back of the 32oz Chobani containers and made a quick batch of their holiday cornbread.

IMG_4640.jpg IMG_4641.jpg

It was ok. Next time I would halve the salt, the bread was a little salty for my taste.

Dinner is served!

The soup was great. It started to get a little cool outside this afternoon (finally!!), so it was perfect soup weather. Yum. Yum. Yum.

Stocking candy for dessert!

Plus a piece of Derek’s stocking candy. He got Reeses in his stocking – my parents obviously love him more. πŸ˜›

We tried watching Star Wars IV tonight (Derek had never seen it), but it was really hard for either of us to get into. I think it’s one of those things you have to grow up loving or you’re just never going to appreciate it as an adult. Star Wars just isn’t for us.

However, episodes of How I Met Your Mother on Netflix? Much better!

Are you a fan of Star Wars?

I don’t ever remember watching the Star Wars series growing up, but a few years ago I watched all of them just to watch them. I must’ve been just as uninterested watching them back then because Derek kept asking me all these questions about what happens and I didn’t have a clue.

Don’t worry, you are not alone. I could never get into Star Wars and can’t sit through more than 15 minutes! The sorbet looks delicious!

I’m watching How I Met Your Mother on Netflix right now! I’m only on the first season but I really like it so far.

I totally want to try the Yonanas!! I just kind of wish it had a different name. There is something about saying “Oh I’m gonna whip up some yonanas” that makes me feel kind of embarrassed haha.

Derek has never seen Star Wars? I thought that was a rule for all little boys.

I thought so too! Derek grew up more on ‘classic’ films from his Mom’s childhood like Sound of Music and Mary Poppins, he hasn’t even seen he majority of the Disney animated features!

12 Gina @ Running to the Kitchen December 27, 2011 at 11:04 pm

My husband is obsessed with Star Wars. He made me sit through all the old ones before seeing the “newer” ones that came out a few years ago. Bor-ing. Not my cup of tea at all.

If I am ever in the Florida area, I am sitting you and Derek down, making you watch Star Wars IV-VI (skip the ‘first’ three, crap, crap, crap!), answering your questions as we go along and you *will* love it.

Until then, I’m pretending I didn’t read that so I don’t have to secretly dislike you for not being a geek.

I’m so with you on the secret dislike. The original Star Wars (IV-VI) is awesome and should never be hated. Granted, I wish Lucas would quit messing with the films. There is no need to CGI everything or to change Han shooting first.

15 AndreaClaire December 28, 2011 at 10:47 am

I completely understand. In fact, I have a cross-stitch wall hanging which says ‘Han shot first’ because I feel so strongly about it, I put it in cross-stitch! πŸ™‚

17 Meghann December 28, 2011 at 11:29 am

haha – I promise I’m still a geek! We watched episode IV last night. The funny thing is, I watched the first three episodes when they came out in the theater years ago before I saw the original ones and liked those better. Don’t hate me!

Ha! I saw the first Lord of the Rings in the theater, fell sleep during the second one when I tried to watch it at home and never saw the third one. I’m almost tempted to just watch the last 20 minutes of the third one just to see how it ends.

23 Elyse December 28, 2011 at 12:10 am

Aw are you allergic to bananas? I couldn’t imagine, I’m too obsessed with them.

And no, I have zero interest in a war among stars πŸ™‚

24 Cait @ Beyond Bananas December 28, 2011 at 7:54 am

My father bought my a yonanas late last summer. Sadly, I rarely use it. I am thinking it will be more of a summer machine. It is too cold up here in the winter months to want to use it!

25 Stephanie December 28, 2011 at 8:17 am

Thanks for the idea on what I can do with the rest of my ham πŸ™‚ that soup looks yummy.

I have never been into Star Wars either but my husband somehow talked me into the midnight showing about 4 years ago when the new one came out in theaters. Needless to say that next time I may plan for us to wear a darth vader and princess leia costume so we don’t feel out of place.. πŸ˜‰ I could at least do my hair in buns!

Just curious, but what is the seasoning in your bean soup? I’ve wanted to make soup for a while, but am nervous to work with dried beans!

30 Meghann December 28, 2011 at 11:32 am

The bag of beans I purchased came with a cajun seasoning mix that I dumped in. It’s the same one my Dad always used growing up, so I knew it was a good mix to use. πŸ™‚

31 Janine @ThePurpleGiraffe December 28, 2011 at 9:05 am

That soup looks amazing! And the sorbet, too! What a cool device! I got the SodaStream for christmas and am pretty pumped about that!

I love the star wars movies. I watched them for the first time when I was a teenager, but only after I had seen SpaceBalls a million times, so it was so much funnier after I had seen the movies! hahaha!

Saw an infomercial for the Yonanas and it looks awesome! I love the fact that you can use other frozen fruit for different flavors.
The boyfriend and I are huge fans of Star Wars – we recently had a marathon of all 6 movies on blu ray! But you’re totally right, it’s not a genre everybody can get into.

33 Bev December 28, 2011 at 10:17 am

I saw the Yonanas thing in the store (I love soft ice cream). does it include instructions for using the other fruits. and perhaps Yogurt??

34 Meghann December 28, 2011 at 11:34 am

You can use what ever frozen fruits you want. There’s a ‘recipe book’ that offers different variations though.

35 Cait's Plate December 28, 2011 at 10:23 am

Gah! I’ve secretly wanted that Yonanas thing since I first saw it!! I’m so jealous and glad to see that it actually works!

I only recently saw Star Wars, and LOVED them! However, episode IV is hard to get into, and was my least favorite. Tell Derek to stick it out, it’s worth it! After he see’s them all episode IV makes perfect sense. πŸ™‚

37 Kelli December 28, 2011 at 4:29 pm

The Yonanas machine looks like a lot of fun! Might have to put that on the wishlist for my next birthday…

I am a Star Wars fan, but I grew up with a sci-fi crazy dad (I’m guessing it helps). If you’re a HIMYM fan, make sure you catch the episode where Stella Zinman watches Star Wars for the first time (I think it’s the first episode of season 4)!

38 Whitney December 29, 2011 at 11:12 am

I just saw this episode ! I’m not a Star Wars fan but my latest Netflix addiction has been HIMYM & I instantly thought of Stella when I read the post.
