The King of Pears

by Meghann on December 22, 2011

Good Morning!

Only three more days until Christmas! Yippee!!

I was at the gym this morning for my final strength workout before the holiday festivities kick in. I completed NROLFW 5A and had a great chat with my gym buddies regarding egg nog, holiday travels, and marathons. It’s funny how one random conversation leads to another?

But, what I was REALLY looking forward to this morning was one of the Harry & David pears Derek’s parents gave us last night.

When I saw the box of pears on the counter last night I’m sure my eyes got all bug eyed and I began to drool a little. My grandmother used to send us boxes of pears every Christmas and they are seriously the best pears in the whole world. You have to eat them fast because they arrive super ripe and just exploding with juice and flavor. It’s really heaven in pear form.

Derek’s dad had received the pears as a gift from a patient earlier in the week and happily offered us a couple to take home. He didn’t have to ask me twice, I was already plotting ways to steal a couple when no one was looking. Just kidding. Maybe. πŸ˜‰

He sent us home with two and I used one as a base for my morning yogurt/ cereal bowl.

In the bowl:

  • 1 Harry & David Pear
  • Plain Yogurt
  • Last of the Bolthouse Farms Holiday Nog
  • Cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup Honey Almond Uncle Sam’s
  • 1/4 cup Pumpkin Spice Granola

Only 3/4 of the pear made it in the bowl, the rest was enjoyed straight off the cutting board. It was even more glorious than I remembered. πŸ™‚

$5 says I end up eating the second pear before Derek does. Any takers?

What’s your favorite traditional holiday gift you enjoy receiving every year?

I’m always a fan of receiving homemade peppermint bark and sugar cookies as gifts. πŸ™‚

My grandmother sends us a H&D box every year around this time too. I’m anxiously awaiting my box πŸ™‚ Those pears are the best/juicest on the planet!

I’ve never been one to get excited over H&D pears. It’s really overpriced for a piece of fruit, if ya ask me. (or maybe that’s just me being jealous that I dont have that kind of $$$ to drop on pears!). I do love specialty candy at Christmas, like chocolate covered orange peel!

It isn’t really a gift, but every year since I can remember, my mom ALWAYS gets me an Advent Calendar. I’m 23 and still get them! I always love eating that little piece of candy every morning. It’s also a way to keep track of how many days are left until Christmas!!

My favorite is getting the Lindt Chocolate Reindeer in my stocking. Aaron has to fight me to keep his, because I end up eating both. He takes too long!

Pears in yogurt bowls is one of my favorite ways to eat them! I always get clementines in my stocking. Not necessarily the best present but I think I would be really sad if they didn’t show up one year.

Totally agree about the pears. My uncle always sends a box around the holidays (along with homemade jams from his fruit trees!). They are the best pears and so juicy!

These days I’d rather give holiday goodies than receive them. But growing up one of the highlights of the holidays was when my parents would receive boxed petit fours from a family friend. There was something so awesome about those tiny cakes to little kid me πŸ™‚

Can you believe that I had never tasted a pear until I was in high school? I’ve always been an apples and bananas kind of girl, but my boyfriend (now husband) ate all kinds of “exotic” fruits like pears and plums.*

I read your post this morning & thought those pears looked delicious. Then, when the mail truck came a little while ago, a box with Harry & David pears, apples & treats arrived from my mom’s boss – weird coincidence! I’m psyched to eat a pear ASAP πŸ˜‰

Each year I get a Christmas movie from James which is a tradition we started when we first started dating.. The best part about it is that we have built up quite a library of holiday movies so we can get into the spirit right at the beginning of December πŸ™‚

Oh my gosh those Harry and David pears literally are THE BEST PIECES OF FRUIT YOU WILL EVER TASTE! We get them every year from my grandma and everyone in my family fights over them. Last year we sauteed them to put on top of french toast for christmas morning breakfast–oh. my. god. good.

Have you had the harry and david caramel chocolate popcorn mixes? Those are soooo addictive!
