Vegas Help

by Meghann on November 30, 2011

I made a rookie mistake in the world of cohabitation last night. I went to bed before calling dibs on the leftover potato leek soup and Derek polished it off as a midnight snack. It wasn’t until I went to grab it at lunch time that I even realized it was gone.

Rookie mistake. Big time.

Oh, well. On to Plan B.

Plan B was random. My heart had already been set on the soup, so I wanted something warm and comforting to fill the void. I heated up the last of a bag of kale in a small frying pan and added some carrot, pinto beans, and a little seasoning.

The results were perfect. The dish had a comforting southern vibe to it that was a perfect alternative to the hot soup.

On the side I melted a little cheese on some leftover cornbread.

That was a first, but it definitely won’t be the last. I’m pretty sure melted cheese works well on almost anything.

Vegas Help

On Friday morning I’m packing up and heading out to Las Vegas to rock the half marathon with 30,000 of my closet friends.

Anne P. and I will be there representing Attune Foods and we can’t wait to get our race on!

We’re both extra excited because this will be first time we’ve returned to Vegas since being ‘of age.’ (The last time I was in Las Vegas I was 10 and don’t remember much outside of the cool arcades we were left to entertain ourselves in for hours.)

Now, here’s where we need your help. Vegas is SO big and SO overwhelming, that we’re not quite sure where to begin. What restaurants should we dine at?! What clubs should we dance in?! Where can I purchase a condom veil for Anne to rock through the weekend?!

Help! Please share all your Vegas tips and tricks with us!

OK, I was just there last week and I’m still working on my recap. I’ll let you know when it’s up!

You MUST eat crepes in Paris! They are incredible!!

3 Kate November 30, 2011 at 2:16 pm

I love the brunch buffet that they have at Paris. I also like Nine Fine Irishmen and the steakhouse at New York New York. Be sure to spend some time just checking out all the hotels…they are pretty cool. The Venetian and the Wynn are two of my favorites. Catch a Cirque Du Soleil show if you have time…”Love” was really neat!

4 Casey @ Pocket Full of Sunshine November 30, 2011 at 2:18 pm

#1 recommendation: stay in a hotel right on the strip! I recently stayed at The Venetian, and it’s a good location and not too expensive. Honestly, the hotels of of the strip aren’t that much cheaper, and then you will be paying in cab fairs to get to where the action is. This way, you can walk out your door and just go exploring at all the other hotels/casinos! 🙂

Dueling piano bar in new york, new york is really fun. I honestly think a lot of the food in vegas is over priced and over rated. Mesa grill is pretty good if you want to get fancy.

7 Eva November 30, 2011 at 2:22 pm

neon sign graveyard
springs preserve
red rock canyon
conservatory at bellagio (all real organic material!)

bouchon at venetian (or stop by the bakery for a TKO)
sage at aria
best breakfast is tableau at the wynn, in fact every restaurant in the wynn has amazing vegan options! (eating outside at the lake or dreams or a cocktail at parasol down outside)
mon ami gabi at paris (for outdoor seating — or across the way at olives at the bellagio)
fleur de lys as mandalay bay
pink taco at hard rock hotel

crystals at city center
the shops at wynn and encore
fashion show mall
forum shops at caesars (where there is a vosges!)

8 Eva November 30, 2011 at 5:36 pm

also china poblano at the cosmopolitan is amazing — it’s a mix of chinese and mexican (but not fusion) items on the menu and they are constantly making fresh tortillas one one side of restaurant and fresh dumplings on the other side of the restaurant

best dessert: luv-its frozen custard!

Vegas is my favorite place! Here are a few of my suggestions:
Best burger: Burger Bar
Best dessert: Sugar Factory (There’s one in Planet Hollywood-Red Velvet Brownie-insanely yummy)
Best Show: Ka (Cirque du Soleil)
Hmmm…oh, and remember drinks are on the house if you’re gambling. We just throw a couple bucks in the slot machine and wait around til they take our order. Cheap way to get free drinks! Have fun!!!

I visited for the first time last week – we found a couple of great small places to eat at. There is a place in front of Caesars Palace called Serendipity 3. Great food!

And also in the Cosmopolitan we found a “secret” pizza place (via Yelp). There are no signs or anything. It’s under “Secret Pizza” in Yelp and the reviews helped us find it. Hole in the wall for sure! Lots of workers go there and for a good reason!

I don’t have much to offer.. other than I’m jealous! Hope y’all have a wonderful and fun-filled trip! Hoping we get to go there in August next year.. we will see.

p.s. yuuuum cornbread!

16 kathleen @ the daily crumb November 30, 2011 at 2:39 pm

one of our best meals was at bobby flay’s mesa grill in caesar’s palace. other than that, i say just walk the strip! there’s SO much to do, i often find that NOT having a schedule is the way to go 🙂

Voodoo lounge at Rio is a lot of fun. Excellant music. if you get there before 10 there is no cover. If you are a big drinker (don’t think you are) they have a wrist band option where you spend like 75 and it’s open bar all night. We went to Eve, but that has since closed. On Sunday Beetles Revolution at the Mirage has ladies night.
The Burger Bar at Mandalay Bay is supposed to be awesome. If you go off the strip hit up Egg and I diner. HUGE breakfasts.

18 Michelle November 30, 2011 at 2:55 pm

Hoping to see you there! I am totally winging it and living in the moment (for once). There will be drinking, eating, gambling, dancing — and I suppose, running! What day are you guys checking in?

Ha ha. Good luck in Vegas. It’s not my favorite city, I spent 16 days there when adopting my Sophia…never did find a decent restaurant that wasn’t too pricey and served healthy food. Even still, I’m jealous and wish I could run the half. Have a fabulous time and for sure find some good nightclubs…live it up! Jess

20 Sarah November 30, 2011 at 2:59 pm

Mesa Grill in Caesar’s for dinner.
Burger Bar or Todd English Pub for lunch.
Chandelier Bar at the Cosmopolitan for drinks.
Mon Ami Gabi for breakfast
Bouchon Bakery stand for coffee
Frozen hot chocolate at Serendipity 3!

21 Emily November 30, 2011 at 3:00 pm

Several things. My husband and I were just there. 🙂
Where are you staying? I know the start/finish is at Mandalay Bay. Hooters Hotel Casino is VERY close, and yes its hooters BUT its vegas. 🙂 That’s where we always stay AND where we gamble when we’re there. $3 blackjack! Their restaurant the Mad Onion has the BEST steak quesadilla I have ever eaten.
Places OTHER than Hooters? Burger Bar in the shops at Mandalay Place. Cabo Wabo at planet hollywood (great nachos & delicious wabo-ritas).
Have so much fun!

I just got back from Vegas on Saturday – it was awesome. I mostly enjoyed walking the strip and eating!!! I am blogging (in parts) about my trip over the next few days… parts 1 – 3 are posted!!

The breakfast buffet at the Bellagio was amazing (and probably the best value of the trip. I also went to see Divas Las Vegas which is a drag show. It was really good, like a concert! And we also go BOGO tickets. We stayed at the Flamingo – definitely nice staying right on the strip and just walking out to see all of the action.

I lived in Vegas for a few years, and my all time favorite thing to do is go to the top of the Stratosphere – there’s a lounge at the top with a great chill vibe and loads of fabulous cocktails. Go a little before sunset and you’ll have amazing views of all the mountain ranges (and the Strip/old Downtown of course) all the way down to Lake Mead. Note that it’s a free trip up in the elevator if you’re headed to the lounge :-). If you’re looking for food, go to Firefly! It’s tapas, and there are two branches – one on Paradise near Flamingo (Strip) and the other is on Fremont Street.

And ditto to the previous poster who said to go out to Red Rock Canyon to do a little hiking (or just drive the loop) – it’s amazing to see what else the valley has besides casinos and restaurants.

31 Amanda November 30, 2011 at 3:58 pm

I went to Vegas a few years ago and second most of the suggestions here. We went to Mesa Grill for breakfast/brunch and it was very good! Serendipity 3 for frozen hot chocolate! (The Vegas location wasn’t yet open when I was there, but I have been in NYC and it was excellent!)

I would check Spencers for the veil… that’s where I got all of my sister’s, uh, favors for her bachelorette party.

32 Gina @ Running to the Kitchen November 30, 2011 at 3:59 pm

Hey Meghann,

I would definitely recommend getting tapas at Jaleo in the Cosmopolitan hotel! It’s absolutely delicious and a great way to share dinner with people.

34 Leanne @ The Skinny Architect November 30, 2011 at 4:14 pm

Ooooohhhhh, I love Vegas!! The boyfriend and I used to go every year, it was fabulous, I really miss it.

I recommend eating at the Eiffel Tower Restaurants. Coordinate your reservation about 30 minutes before the fountains at the Bellagio are set to go off and then request a table overlooking the strip. In my opinion it is the best fountain view.
I also really loved Bouchon in the Venetian as well as Dos Caminos in the Palazzo. Dos Caminos has the BEST fancy Mexican food in the city (or at least that I have tried).
I also recommend the Titanic Exhibit at the Luxor, best money I have spent in Vegas, it’s soooo cool.
I hope to run the full in Vegas next year (my first marathon) so I am looking forward to your post marathon blog post about it! Good luck and have fun!

I haven’t been in a while . . . but last time I went I saw the show Bite at the Stratosphere (where the rollercoaster is on top of the hotel) and it was an amazing show. Okay, so it’s about vampires and half the girls are naked, but boy can they dance! and sing. amazing. I heard any of the Cirque shows were good too.

36 Bethany November 30, 2011 at 4:37 pm

I think a lot of clubs do this, but if you eat at a club, you can get free entrance. The price to get into most nice clubs is absolutely ridiculous. I went to Tao to do this and it was delicious food! Also, you don’t have to wait in line for the club! Also, go to Ceasars and see the forum shops, and eat at the Bellagio restaurant which is right next to the Bellagio atrium that changes with the seasons.

37 Natalie @ Adventures in Jackson November 30, 2011 at 4:57 pm

So exciting about Vegas. Yahooo! I went in June with the bf. Here were my favorites:
– Serendipity (like the one in the movie!) at Caesar’s Palace
– The Sugar Factory in the Paris
– The amazing chocolate fountain sculpture in the Bellagio

Also, if you sit at a bar in a casino and play the video poker or blackjack (which has crappy odds) you drink for free! So we would just sit there, put a $20 in and verrrry slowly play (betting the least amount you can) while drinking. We always came out even or on top and our drinks were on the house!

I was just there in October. I cannot even begin to tell you how amazing Bar Masa at Aria is. I had a really FANTASTIC dinner and love love loved everything. Also, no matter what anyone says, I think you have to do the Bellagio Buffet if only to see a really nice, classy and delicious buffet.

I had some great shopping inside of Planet Hollywood and the Venetian is also really pretty to check out. But, really, I say just walk around as much as possible and try to check out all of the cool hotels.

As for a show, you really can’t go wrong with any of the Cirque du Soleil ones but my personal favorite is Zumanity. It’s very sensual and pretty. “O” inside of the Bellagio is also a classic.

I stayed at the Mirage and loved it. The beatles love circ du solei show there is awesome!!! I also like their casino.

Theres a restaurant at the bottom of paris, first floor (to the left when you walk in). Its really delicious and reasonably priced which is something really hard to find in vegas! It’s RIGHT ACROSS from the bellagio and if you sit outside you can watch the fountain shows while you eat. So amazing!

Hope you have an amazing time!

Agree with most everything everyone else said, but I was there a few months ago and had amazing happy hour food/drink in a little Mexican place in the Palazzo called Dos Caminos. It was great, and cheap!!!
I’m heading out for the half marathon as well, maybe I will see you out there!!

42 Meg at November 30, 2011 at 7:32 pm

So its cheesy and totally touristy, but you have to go see the fountains at the Bellagio! And again, a little touristy and guilty pleasure, but I love Bobby Flay restaurants, so I would say take a look at Mesa Grill.

The Stratosphere has an amazing dinner with a gorgeous view but if you’re looking for something more low key, Roy’s is always a good choice. My husband and I got married years ago in Vegas, and try to go back once a year. Last December, we brought all of our kids (they were 21, 24, and 27) and their boyfriend/girlfriends. 8 of us! It was epic! Their favorites – Buchon at Palazzo, Love (the Beatles cirq show) at the Mirage, having drinks at Mon Ami Gabi and watching the Bellagio Fountains, and the Boys to Men concert at (I think?) Harrahs. We love Carnaval Court at Harrahs too.
What surprised them most was how COLD the desert was, lol. Brr!
Make sure you get players cards everywhere you go. Some good perks there.
You can usually get a really good room upgrade, just by asking.
We loved the dolphin habitat at the Mirage too
