Ugh. That was not pretty.
I woke up to rain this morning, but was still determined to get my planned 8 miles in. I’ve been slacking on runs lately and needed to do this. Without giving it too much thought I headed to the gym and braced myself for my longest distance on the treadmill to date.
Hats off to anyone who can run double digits on the treadmill because that just isn’t me. Before today I think my longest treadmill run was 6 miles and even that was hard to handle. Treadmills are great for speed sessions or squeezing a short run in, but anything beyond 4 or 5 miles bores me.
Luckily i was able to distract myself with the Netflix app on my phone this morning. I propped the phone on the treadmill and watched 1.5 episodes of Army Wives. It saved me from quitting halfway through. I just focused on the show and ignored the clock.
I did learn something new about the treadmills at my gym. Apparently they automatically reset themselves after an hour.
Obviously I took that as my cue to take a short break and refill my water bottle before continuing on.
The last 1.71 were fun. Umm… not. I pushed through and was just thankful I wasn’t planning on running 10+, 8 was just fine.
Again – to all of you who run on a treadmill regularly – major props. You guys rock. I’m just a big baby.
I left the gym hungrier than usual after a run. I wonder why that is?
Cereal was the quickest, easiest thing I could get my hands on when I walked in the door.
In the mix:
- 1/2 cup Cinnamon Cheerios
- 1/2 cup Kashi Go Lean Crisp
- 1/4 cup Good Run Granola
- 1/2 apple
- plain yogurt
Perfect. π
What’s the longest run you’ve done on a treadmill? I know there are some crazy 20+ runners out there. π
My longest treadmill run is 21 miles – and i will NEVER, EVER do that many on a treadmill again. It. Was. Awful! Like you said, major props to those you can do it on a regular basis. I don’t mind doing up to 13 because that is about a TV movie length but after that – forget it!

21?! Wowza! You rock for that one.
6 is my longest and I’d like to keep it that way! It’s the sole reason that from last Dec-March my runs never exceeded that length. Too boring! Especially in my basement with no TV to distract me.

I can not run more than 6 on a treadmill! I guess I could if I absolutely had to, but I can say that I would rather run in the rain, snow, etc. than on the treadmill. I just get so bored. I have a hard time doing things like reading a magazine or watching tv because of the movement. I really just don’t like it.
But seriously, major props to anyone that can bust out 20 miles on a treadmill!

I think you should be more ‘Operation Beautiful’ towards the treadmill. Don’t think negative thoughts about it. Just be happy you can run and do it!
ha! I like this mind set π
I ran 10 miles on the treadmill once because it was storming bad outside–it wasn’t too bad, except the treadmill re-set itself like twice. ha! as long as i have a TV in front of me its okay. I still prefer the outdoors though.

Nice work Meghann! Last week my co-worked thought I was crazy when I told him I run 8.5 miles in an hour regularly on the treadmill. He asked how I do it, and I said that I’m not really sure – I just put on my iPod and go! It doesn’t feel that long to me any more, but when I was training for a marathon a while ago, I ran for an hour and 20 mins… I’d planned a long run that day, outside, but the weather was terrible! I can’t remember how far I got in that time, but I’m guessing it would have been around 11.3 miles.

Treadmill runs are hard. No question. I’ve been running on the treadmill a lot lately b/c I’m such a scaredy cat about running outside by myself, but I just need to find a really populated trail, b/c I’m over the treadmill!

I did 9 on the treadmill last winter when it was too icy to run outside. I had to break it up into three 5K’s and I got off for some H2O after each one. Thankfully I did have the TV and a marathon of Get It Sold to help me finish!
Ugh I hate the dreadmill!
My longest was 10 miles… My friend was staying with me and needed to get in a training run for her upcoming FULL IronMan. Which was great but we had been out late and were hangover! I had to go with her because it was my gym, and we sweated out our hangovers that morning.

I have run 19 on a treadmill before, and 18, and 16, and several 10-14 milers. It’s really not all that bad. During the winter, when we have snow days (I’m a teacher), one of my favorite things to do is my long run in the middle of the morning while watching all the morning talk shows – the Today show, Regis & Kelly, Rachael Ray show. I actually look forward to this so much! Kinda twisted.

I’m training for my first half marathon on the treadmill because I am too scared to run outside by myself! I have to go super early in the morning when it’s dark and I can’t find a running partner. Tomorrow is my 8 miler on the treadmill and I am wondering how to keep motivated. The gym has TV’s but due to the hour there is never anything good on!
Im training for my first marathon on the mill because of Texas heat. 18 is my record. I even did my half marathon on it after the outdoor race was cancelled because of a monsoon.
I worry about running outside! I hope it compares as far as pace and ability. 8 on the mill is a long one. Not long enough for a movie, too long for one show. Poop! and isn’t that SO annoying when things shut down and reset. It is my cue to potty.

I’ve run 10 freakin’ miserable miles on a treadmill. Living in NYC in winter, the treadmill becomes a friend. Come to think of it, that’s probably why I quit ironman training a few months after moving from L.A. to New York. The cold just wasn’t worth it, nor was toiling hours away on the dreadmill.

I avoid the treadmill, but I’ve been out past 1 a.m. in the rain getting in my 20 miles.
I’m pretty sure my longest was 6… wasn’t too bad though because GMA was on the big screen and I was done in well under an hour. Plus watching other people can be distracting. Not sure I could do more than 8 or 10 though….

Longest run on a treadmill–17.5 baby!!! I loved it. I am weird, I know. But I must say, after all that training on a treadmill, I think I burned out for awhile. I could only do 3-5 miles for a bit there. Now, with a movie or good music, I could go and go and go…… haha.

13. When I slipped a disc in my back two winters ago, for some reason regular running was excruciating but treadmill running didn’t bother it at all. Since I was in the early stages of marathon training I didn’t want to miss my long runs, so i did them on the treadmill until I could run on pavement again. Best trick I learned was to pick a long (7-8 minute), fast paced song (“Sandstorm” by Darude works exceptionally well) and speed up by 0.1 every minute of the song, then return back to your normal pace at the end of the song. Speeds things up and keeps them interesting!
my longest treadmill run was 18 miles. i did 3 sets of 6 miles lasting 3 HOURS. i was training for a marathon (that i didn’t end up running) and was in a very bad place with an ED. ahhh never again!
nice job on the run! my longest treadmill run was 10 miles. crazy, i know. somehow it doesn’t bother me- i just kind of zone out to my music or a tv show.

My longest treadmill run was 18 miles. I’d do it again in a heartbeat. I love the treadmill as an alternative to the undulations the roads outside and the fluctuating temperatures. Sometimes I want to escape the 105 degree temps in Dallas and the hills in my neighborhood and just zone out on the treadmill.

I was training for a marathon last winter, and my longest run (22 miles) happened to coincide with a major ice storm. Suffice to say…I ran 22 miles at the gym, on the treadmill, with a TON of new songs (only way I could possibly get myself motivated enough to run on a stationary device for 3+ hours). Ultimately, it wasn’t a horrible experience, but for the life of me I can’t remember a good portion of that run – I was just on autopilot.

My longest treadmill run was 12 miles! If I am in the zone, and have mentally prepared myself for such a long run ahead of time, I can usually power through it. There’s no way I could set out on a long treadmill run on a whim. The 60 minute reset was SO annoying and distracting.
8 miles is a huge accomplishment on the treadmil! I think the most i’ve done is 6, and that was rough. Way to stick with your plan!

Did 10 on the TM this fall when Hurricane Irene hit. The weather really is the only reason I’ll spend time on the gerbil-wheel.
I’ve done 16. I don’t HATE the treadmill, but that was too long! We had subzero weather, though, and I won’t run outside in that! I definitely need something good to watch while on the TM. Music alone doesn’t cut it. π

Wow some of the commenters have run crazy distances! My longest was 13. It was superbowl sunday a few years back when we lived in Ann Arbor and there were feet of snow on the ground. Normally that wouldn’t have bothered me but long winter runs there always required a thawing out and warming up period and we were hosting a party. So I needed to able to hop off the treadmill, shower and be ready to go. Thank God for a basement TV and movies!
You’re not a baby at all, when I was running I’d take the outdoors (even if 10*f and a foot of snow for 15 miles) over the treadmill any chance I could. But as a mom of 2 young children and a regularly deployed husband, you make concessions where you must.
It’s pitch dark when I leave for work… and when I get home, too. π
I hate running in the dark so I pretty much have been doing ALL of my workouts on the treadmill. I am actually really thankful for it, despite it being a bit boring. The most I’ve done is 9. If you do intervals (even long ones, like 4-5 minutes) it goes by WAY faster. Good job, 8 is still annoying.
