Tennis Balls Are My Friend

by Meghann on September 28, 2011

To say my meals are random would be an understatement. πŸ˜‰

IMG_4123.JPG

The problem is, I have my mind set on one thing, then I look in the fridge and everything starts looking good.

Mmmmm… apple sauce? That sounds good! Green beans?! Yes, please! Wait, something is missing. Dates. Definitely. Dates.

And then I end up with this. A tasty lunch only my state of hunger would enjoy.

IMG_4124.JPG

Originally I was going after the ricotta and jam sandwich, but once I saw the apple sauce in the fridge, almond butter entered the equation. I stuck with the ricotta and jam (plus chopped dates) on one side and slathered almond butter and apple sauce on the other. I probably wouldn’t have flipped the two halves to make a whole, but separately, they complemented each other nicely.

The raw green beans (raw green beans ROCK) were added for a little green and the blue corn chips are on their last leg and need to be polished off pronto.

Back Pains

My back is killing me today! The bike must have done a number on me on Sunday and being hunched over a computer doesn’t help either. Luckily, Victoria tweeted me with some great advice.

Screen shot 2011-09-28 at 1.45.40 PM.png

A.ma.zing. It was like a foam roller for my back.

Of course, I was using Maddie’s tennis ball, so she assumed I was going to play. I lasted approximately 2 minutes before she managed to get it out from under me and take off with it.

Lesson learned. I’ll get my own ball next time. πŸ˜‰

Any other quick tip remedies for between the should back pain?

Hahaha my family and I do the EXACT same thing!! They really are the best for that!

Great tip for the tennis balls. Bizarre lunch too!

3 Joelle (On A Pink Typewriter) September 28, 2011 at 1:56 pm

I was going to suggest something similar! Instead of a tennis ball, try a lacrosse ball if you can get your hands on one.. My bf swears by it for his back pain!

4 Khushboo September 28, 2011 at 1:57 pm

Good idea about the tennis ball! Do you think it would work fine on legs too??

I feel you..my lunches/dinners have been SO random lately. We have hardly any produce/accompaniments to meals (just proteins), so I’ve been putting random things together. Today I made a sandwich with a chicken apple sausage, goat cheese and honey…it was actually really tasty.

Just wait until you are so dependent upon the tennis ball that you carry one in your purse.

that tennis ball idea is great! There’s no way I could afford massages, but sometimes I really need one! That would be a great thing for me to try!

Derek’s hands. ASAP.

And I mean that seriously. Sometimes I come home and just beg my boyfriend for a back rub. I lay on my stomach and he just lays into my shoulders. It. is. awesome.

I LOVE the tennis ball trick. I do it all the time! SO glad you had the kinks worked out.

P.s. sometimes my lunches are SO random, so I totally understand πŸ™‚

11 Kelly September 28, 2011 at 2:40 pm

Bridge pose! When you’re in it (hips lifted), raise your arms up, interlace your fingers, press your knuckles toward the ceiling and s-l-o-w-l-y roll back down, then roll back up and repeat a few times. Yoga therapy rocks!

12 Nikki September 28, 2011 at 2:49 pm

I guess that is just a swimmer secret! We used to do that all of the time…it works perfectly!

what a great idea for ridding of back pain. Going to try that one out. Kelly’s yoga therapy suggestion sound really good, too.

BTW, I love lunches thrown together like your pics. The choices all seem to compliment each other in the end. πŸ™‚

oh man, I do that too. I rub it on my sore arms and legs too. It’s a good replacement for a foam roller when you don’t have one!

If you want an even yummier back massage take two tennis balls and put them in a sock. Tie a knot so they are somewhat tight against each other (some ability to separate is good). Then align them with your spine in between…poor girls massage πŸ˜‰

16 Bridget September 28, 2011 at 3:07 pm

I can’t believe a tennis ball fits into Maddie’s mouth!

17 Meghann September 28, 2011 at 3:09 pm

She can pick up a soccer ball if you throw it for her!

18 Margaret September 28, 2011 at 3:08 pm

Legs up the wall yoga pose, figure four hip stretch, and the assisted hamstring stretch (lie on your back and use a strap/tie etc. to tie around your foot and streetch!).

19 Beth @ 990 Square September 28, 2011 at 3:09 pm

Victoria is very smart πŸ™‚ I also have a hard core foam roller (the Grid) which I use on my back.

22 Deva @ Deva by Definition September 28, 2011 at 4:47 pm

I love the image of maddie going after the ball. In my head it is akin to my cat going after one of his toys when it is under my foot, when he is frantically going ” it’s a ball! let me grab my ball! i dig! i dig! yay! ball!”

I have two dogs and use the tennis ball trick all over. Even if you get a ball of your own, she’ll still steal it. Be warned :).

I have these green balls that are about twice the size of tennis balls and you use them for the same thing. Miracle Method balls – I think they are called and they are great because you can put one ball on either side of your spine and get both sides of your back at once.

A lacrosse ball is even better than a tennis ball! It’s rock solid, where tennis balls are a little soft. You will feel that Lacrosse ball when it hits the knots!

28 Almost Athletic Ali September 28, 2011 at 7:24 pm

There is nothing more fulfilling than a random assortment of the exact foods you want, all on one plate. I love the variety on your plate!!

29 Cara September 28, 2011 at 9:07 pm

haha that is exactly what happens when I use a golf ball to get the knots out of the bottom of my feet. my dogs love to attack it. how great. i hope your back feels 100% soon.

30 mary September 28, 2011 at 9:32 pm

I do the tennis ball thing. I have to have Brian do it though on my legs because I never rub hard enough. it hurts. so. good!

I love random meals! Some of my tastiest meals have come out of the extreme hunger and desperation that come with throwing someting together as quickly as possible!

Love that Maggie didn’t want to share her toy with you – unless of course you intended to use it to play with her! πŸ™‚ My doxie Roosevelt is extremely possessive when it comes to his 99 toys as well. And even if I’m picking them up to put them away, that equals play time to him. πŸ™‚

Speaking of foam rollers for your back, have you actually tried laying on your foam roller and rolling? That helps me too – although tennis balls are definitely more targeted. πŸ™‚

35 Sarah @ The Dirt Road Dreamer September 29, 2011 at 1:55 pm

I’m with Joelle’s bf on this one… the lacrosse ball will far exceed your expectations. It has less give than a tennis ball. Although you may have to hide them… Dogs find them irresistable!
Sarah @ The Dirt Road Dreamer recently posted..Paleo Stuffed Peppers

36 Meghann September 29, 2011 at 2:13 pm

You know what? I don’t think I’ve ever even seen a lacrosse ball in person! I’ll have to look for one at a sports store. Do they sell them at Target?

37 Sarah @ The Dirt Road Dreamer September 29, 2011 at 8:30 pm

You may be able to get them at Target if lacrosse is big in your area. My advice is to throw them on your next Amazon order. They usually come in a pack of six so you’ll have some to share with Maddie πŸ™‚

38 Sophie September 30, 2011 at 4:05 am

I use a foam roller which works wonders. To be honest though, a tennis ball is probable just as good and much cheaper.
