At a loss

by Meghann on August 16, 2011

What do you make when you have half a head of cabbage, chicken sausages, tomatoes, and mushrooms in the fridge?

This, apparently. πŸ˜‰

I really was at a lost on what to make for dinner. I shredded the cabbage and tried to braise it on the stove top top with some vinegar, soy sauce, sugar, and mushrooms. It was sweet, salty, and made a good bed for the chicken sausages I had in the fridge.

Hey, it worked!

I was also at a loss with that tomatoes, so I left them as is. Simply sliced with a shake of salt.

Dessert was better than dinner. πŸ˜‰

I made a mix of ricotta cheese, blackberry jam, chocolate chips, and cocoa crispies.

Eversave Giveaway!

It’s no secret I’m a fan of group deal sites! I <3 how they allow me to discover new local restaurants, salons, spas, gyms, etc. right in my inbox!

Last month I used an Eversave deal at Tranquility Escape Salon in South Tampa and loved it. The owner was super sweet and did a great job taming my locks. That same salon has another Eversave deal up for grabs today.

Screen shot 2011-08-16 at 9.15.52 PM.png

$39 for a partial foil of highlights or $49 for a full foil at Tranquility Escape Salon. Sweet!

Good news for you – Eversave would like to present one of the highlight saves (a $39 value) to a local Tampa or Orlando reader (Orlando has a $39 Highlight Save deal going right now too!). All you have to do is leave a comment below with ‘Tampa local in the house!’ of ‘Orlando local in the house!’ (so, I know who wants it) and I’ll pick a random winner tomorrow during my lunch post.

The owner at Tranquility really is super sweet and does a fab job. If you’re in the Tampa area I highly suggest you check her out. πŸ™‚

That cabbage sounds really good. Good job braising it. I’d never have had success on that one.

When I was little, my grandma’s fried gabbage with hot dogs was my favorite. I’ve since made it a couple of times myself by used much less oil. You basically cut up hot dogs/sausages throw them into a big pan, add cabbage, some seasoning to taste and let it cook through for about 10-15 minutes. I sometimes add ketchup to the mix for color and extra flavor.

Sometimes I think thrown together dinners like that are the best! What kind of chicken sausage do you buy? I am always looking for new fun flavors and I am kind of getting sick of Al Fresco. Any suggestions???

I’m really impressed by your dedication to using whatever is in the fridge and not running to the grocery store right away when food is running out…I feel like I’m a terrible food shopper…I always end up throwing stuff away because it goes bad, and whenever I don’t have the ingredients I want in the fridge I run directly to the grocery store.
