A Scary Feeling

by Meghann on May 2, 2011

I have never been more happy to see this face.

Anytime anything bad happens – Maddie knows how to make it right. Just one tongue hanging grin and all of a sudden all is right with the world. πŸ™‚

The day started off great. I spent time with my brother, caught up on e-mails, and headed out of Titusville just before 11.

I even packed my own lunch for the road!

When my tummy started to grumble, I stopped at the first rest area off of I-4 and happily dug in.

Left-over pork roast sandwich with mustard on special rye bread my brother brought home with him from Michigan last night.

A baggie of carrot sticks and grapes.

And lunch time entertainment

(my sister’s marathon recap – go check it out!)

Once back on the road I cranked up the Rent soundtrack, belted my little heart out, and began counting down the miles home.

Then everything changed.

I was in the process of changing lanes when a car hiding in my blind spot appeared out of no where. I quickly swerved to the right to miss hitting the car on the left, but in the process lost control of my own car.

It all happened so quickly. One minute I was going straight and the next I was making 360s in the middle of I4. It’s a scary feeling not being in control of your own car. I could see a line of cars heading straight toward me and the only thing I could think was ‘This is it. They’re going to hit me.’

By some miracle those car never touched me. My car found it’s own way to the grassy median and just as quickly as it had began; it was over. I sat there sort of shaken up for a minute, not quite sure what to do.

A few minutes of shock and tears later, I got out to make sure everything was ok. Everything looked to be in working order – no scratches, no missing parts – just some skid marks on the asphalt.

As scary as it was, this wasn’t the first time I’ve spun off of a major interstate.

I was a senior in high school driving to Tallahassee with my parents when a rear wheel popped and we went spinning into a ditch. I was only 18 and it was my first time making the drive to my future home.

A few years later it happened again, only this time I was in the passenger’s seat. Kelly was driving us home from Tallahassee when a semi cut her off and she lost control trying to swerve out of the way. We spun two times before landing in a similar position I found myself in today.

In total, today was the third time I’ve spun off an interstate. All three times I’ve been incredibly lucky. No one was hurt and each time the car was still in one piece. I’m not sure how I got to be so lucky, but I’m not going to question it in the slightest.

28 Erin May 2, 2011 at 4:31 pm

I don’t know if you have one, but I have a parabolic mirror on my driver’s side mirror and it really eliminates blind spots. It has helped me out SO many times.
You should look into it, if you don’t. I know this obviously doesn’t happen everyday, but blind spots are scary. It’s just a little mirror that attaches to your bigger mirror and you can see right next to your car.

Wow!!! I’m so glad you are ok. HOW SCARY! I would recommend that you take your vehicle to the dealership, tell them what happened and get it checked out. There are a few things that can break on the underbearings of your car during a spin out.
This happened to my brother– he spun out on I95 in the rain. He got his car checked out, and he had some major (but undetectable) damage. THe damage would have affected him later, possibly putting him in the position of not being able to control his vehicle later.

Glad you’re OK! The exact same thing happened to me and my boyfriend when we were moving to Austin and driving there from Tampa. It was just outside Mobile and a dog ran out onto the interstate in front of our car causing us to spin across the highway and slam into the guard rail. Luckily there was a forested median (where the dog came from) so there was no oncoming traffic, and nobody hit us who was going the same way in the next lane. I am so thankful I wasn’t driving, and that we didn’t hit the dog, even though I know you are “supposed” to.

That’s incredibly scary and I’m so glad you are ok! I’ve had my brush with a scary experience…

During my freshman year of college, I was driving back to school in SC after winter break. I was driving along I-26 (westbound) at around 8pm and it was pitch black. This part of I-26 was two lane and I was in the left lane. Before I knew it, there was a HUGE dead deer in my lane and I couldn’t get into the other lane because there was another car. I ended up swerving left, into the median, going through trees and doing a complete 180 in the median and now was facing eastbound- the opposite direction! My car only had a few scratches and a small crack in the bumper. It was SUPER scary and I was so lucky because this was literally the only part of the highway where there wasn’t a concrete barrier in the median! I shutter to think what would have happened if the barrier was there.

Oh my gosh I’m so glad you’re okay! I lost control of my car once when I took a curve a little too quickly and the car started jerking all over the road (I think it’s called fishtailing?) I panicked and it the brakes which of course made it worse, and a car was heading straight toward me. Luckily I didn’t hit it and only skidded into a ditch. Everything was okay, and my car was fine, but I was only 16 and I definitely know how scary something like that can be.
