My Moving Checklist

by Meghann on March 1, 2011

I present you with the only vegetables left in my kitchen.

I told you things were going to continue getting interesting. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Today’s lunch featured both of the remaining ‘vegetables’ plus the last of the italian chicken sausages from my freezer.

Pretty, right?

I cooked the chicken sausage on the stovetop with the canned tomatoes then plated it with the last of a bag of spinach, saurkraut, and blue cheese.

I had high hopes for the combo, but it was a little bland. It needed more spice, maybe some brown mustard would have worked here?

On the side a pickle spear (I have 1/2 a jar in there that I have no desire to move with me)

And Pretzel Goldfish (new goal – finish Goldfish before I move ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

My last Godvia Valentine’s Day Chocolate for dessert.

The Moving Checklist

I have less than a week to go until Derek’s place officially becomes ‘our’ place. Even though I’ve known about the impending move date for almost two months now, I’m still finding myself all over the place trying to pull together a last minute checklist of to dos before I move.

Here’s what I’ve got so far. I’m hoping a few moving pros out there will fill in the gaps where I missed!

  1. Schedule a key drop off with my landlord
    • I hand the keys over at 1:00pm on Saturday!
  2. Gather up friends to help with the move
    • I gave notice to friends and family two months ago, but never followed up and they all booked up with other things. Looks like finding people to help is going to be trickier than I first thought.
  3. Cancel Cable
    • Bringing the box in on Friday (at the last possible minute – of course). I also made a list of everything I have saved on my DVR, so I’ll remember what to set when I get to Tampa. ๐Ÿ˜‰
  4. Cancel Utilities
    • Need to get on this!
  5. Create a change of address for credit cards, banks, magazines, friends, family, Netflix, etc.
    • Probably the most annoying part of moving. :/
  6. Set up mail forwarding with the post office
    • Still need to do this. It will be $5 well spent.
  7. See as many friends and visit as many of my favorite restaurants as possible before I move. ๐Ÿ™‚
    • Whose up for breakfast//lunch/dinner/coffee this week?
  8. Use up last minute Groupon/ Living Social/ Eversave deals
  9. Sell my furniture on Craigslist
    • Sold! (I think) The couple should be back soon to pick it up
  10. Try not to hyperventilate as my apartment starts to look less and less like my apartment and more like an explosion of boxes and dog fur.

What am I missing? Any important to-dos before I load up and head out?

1 Jenn March 1, 2011 at 1:57 pm

You can change your address online for $1 and the mail starts getting forwarded quite speedily ๐Ÿ™‚ happy packing!

Haha, I was going to say the same thing-it’s only $1!! Also, if you set it up to forward that gives you an extra window of time to change all your addresses with banks/bills/etc…But I believe the forwarding only lasts for a few months so make sure you do it in that time! ๐Ÿ™‚

I would suggest doing one really good cleaning of the apartment to insure that you get your deposit back! Some landlords are picky about that stuff.

5 Tracey March 1, 2011 at 5:13 pm

I was going to mention the same thing. Whenever I move out of a place I always make sure everything is good so I get my deposit back ๐Ÿ™‚

6 Amanda March 1, 2011 at 1:57 pm

This may already be accounted for, but don’t forget to allot some time for cleaning AFTER everything is out! It’s much easier when the pup is out as well as all of the boxes, etc than trying to clean around everything!
When I moved last spring, it took me a lot longer than I thought to move and I finished juust as my landlord dropped by to pick up the key. Talk about stressful!

7 Freya March 1, 2011 at 1:57 pm

Wow..I didn’t realise there was quite so much to do! Moving sound so simple, til you think of like, address changes and banks etc :s Maybe I’ll stay put for a while longer ๐Ÿ˜›

I agree with the cleaning… and on that note, don’t pack up your vacuum and cleaning supplies. I’ve done that and it’s no good!

16 Hope March 1, 2011 at 2:22 pm

Make sure to change your address on everything. Mostly everything will automatically get forwarded to you when you submit your change of address form. Just to be sure, I always manually change my address on everything. Definitely clean your apartment before you leave. That is one thing that I always say so that you can get your security deposit back! ๐Ÿ™‚

19 Krista March 1, 2011 at 2:34 pm

How about cleaning? You’ll probably want to get that security deposit back.

If you can’t find anyone to help move, I’d suggest going on Craigslist or contacting friends who have contacts at a local college or high school. A lot of times you can find football players looking to make $50 and a free slice of pizza for hauling your boxes. I usually hire 2 and consider it a $100 well-spent — I save my energy for unpacking and the truck gets loaded/unloaded a lot quicker than if friends and family were working.

Most utility companies will let you set a “shutoff date” for the future. So, if you know you’re handing over your key at 1:00, then you may be able to set your shutoff date/time for then as well.

A few other things to think about — see if there are recycling places near Derek that will take your boxes when you’re finished with them. Start researching good vets/emergency vets for Maddie. I only say that because during my last move, my Boxer sliced her paw open at midnight, and I had NO IDEA where to take her.

24 Kelly March 1, 2011 at 2:54 pm

Do you have boxes? If not, hit up your local ABC store! If you have any pieces of furniture you’re keeping, you’ll want blankets to protect them during the move. And ask someone if you can borrow a dolly…you know, the kind you put boxes on and wheel out the door.

47 Emily March 1, 2011 at 6:17 pm

Gotta say, I’m having trouble imagining a universe in which italian sausage + zesty jalapeno tomatoes + sauerkraut + blue cheese = bland! Of course, I’ve never tried it so this is just speculation ๐Ÿ™‚

Your checklist looks pretty thorough! I would just say make sure you have cleaning supplies at the ready as you move out, and champagne at the ready when you arrive at your new place.
