Bad Puppy

by Meghann on January 19, 2011

Poor Maddie.

She had quite the scare this morning.

Maddie joined me on my 3 mile run this morning and there we were minding our own business, running in a neighborhood we were both very familiar with, when a little Puggle – Chihuahua mix came out of no where and jumped on Maddie.

This was not a happy dog either. This dog was mean and had a slight underbite that made him look even meaner. He barreled right into Maddie, taking both of us completely by surprise, and I immediately dove into ‘protective Mommy mode’ by pushing the other dog away. Maddie was so shocked she just kind of stood there while the mean dog began barking and backing away.

The other dog had no leash, no collar, and was skinny as could be. I felt awful for him, but he was attacking my baby and that is not cool. Eventually the dog ran away and we got on with our run. But still, the whole experience gave both of us a freight.

I hope the other dog found his way back to his home, where ever that might be.

This isn’t the first time I’ve been attacked by a stray dog on a run and this certainly won’t be the last. I’ll just take it as a good reminder to always be aware of my surroundings when I’m running and not to assume all dogs are friendly.

After my run I returned to my apartment and made a very delicious, very rich, very decadent breakfast quesadilla.

Inside I had Naturally Nutty Vanilla Almond Butter, Apple Butter, Strawberries, Blueberries, Chocolate Chips, and Granola.

It was more like dessert than a breakfast, but oh me, oh my it was delicious. A definite must try for anyone whose sweet tooth is as big as mine. πŸ˜‰

And on that note…

If you’re not taking advantage of this Living Social Deal this morning, you’re crazy.

Just sayin’. πŸ˜‰

Poor Maddie! At least it was a little dog and you were able to push him away. I think that would scare me from running outside all together. Your breakfast does look amazing, and I have a giant sweet tooth so I’ll have to give it a try one day soon!

3 Kim @ girlevolving January 19, 2011 at 10:12 am

I HATE getting chased by dogs when I run! If it’s a bigger dog (like lab size or so) that’s growling and kind of coming at me, I’ll wave my arms (to appear bigger) and say things like “hey! Go!” in a deeper voice. It looks (and feels) ridiculous, but it’s worked well for me in the couple times I’ve been cornered!

There’s no such thing as bad puppies…just terrible owners! I may be a little bias as someone who has a puggle mix with an absolutely ridiculous underbite, but generally they are the biggest mush balls in the whole wide world. I’m glad that both you and Maddie are okay and I hope someone finds the dog and gives him a proper, loving home.

I agree – this poor pup just had a bad owner. Usually I find the underbites adorable, but on this pup it just looked mean. I think it had to have some chihuahua in him because he had a puggle face and tail, but a skinny body and pointy ears.

14 michelle January 19, 2011 at 10:42 am

I live on an army base and there are rules stating that all dogs must have a collar and be on a leash but so many people just ignore it. i’ve gotten chased so many times while running and have had some big scares because I’ll have my ipod on and not notice until the dog is right up on me. scary.

15 Margo January 19, 2011 at 10:43 am

Bagigis and I were approached by a stray german shepherd once. I actually called the police station to let them know about it because there were several other pedestrians in the area that were NOT comfortable with the dog being off a leash with no owner in sight.

20 Evan Thomas January 19, 2011 at 10:55 am

That’s horrible; poor Maddie.
One time I was running and these two dogs decided to chase me across a busy street. I was nervous of them biting me but I was even more nervous that they’d get injured since a PT Cruiser almost barreled into them. And the owner was casually walking down her driveway. I couldn’t believe she was being so calm, since her dogs clearly weren’t.

24 Molly January 19, 2011 at 11:04 am

As a dog owner, those situations can be very scary.

I have 2 huge dogs -a lab and a german shepherd mix- which are both very sweet to people and other dogs. The shepherd mix though, is getting older and a little senile- she’s gotten super protective of me. Last week we went to my little sister’s soccer game, and a strange little boy ran up and grabbed my leg, and she growled and kind of lunged at him. Thank god she didn’t bite! Then, a tiny little dachshund ran up and literally tried to fight her. And the owner just stood there, saying, “No, bad dog!” I eventually pulled it off myself. It really shook me up too!

25 Orla January 19, 2011 at 11:05 am

Oh that is not good. I always remember something that my dad told me years ago. If you are ever in a situation where two dogs are fighting, never ever put your hands into separate them, even if they are your dogs. They will probably not know that you are trying to help them and can turn on you so always use your feet or a stick (harsh I know)
me and my boxer cross were attacked by a boxer three times my dogs size before christmas and it scared the pants off me. It didn’t help that the other dogs owner then proceeded to threaten me with a large stick – I was in the right though. My dog was on a leash and his was not.
Still, it is a terrifying thing to happen! Hope you are both over the shock!

That’s a great piece of advice and I hate it when owners tried to make it seem like it’s your fault their dog attacked even if they are the ones letting their dog off the leash.

27 Kierstan @ Life {and running} in Iowa January 19, 2011 at 11:06 am

I absolutely hate unleashed dogs. We run into them more than our fair share of time on walks with out pup and it is so annoying. Granted the dogs might have gotten away from their owners, but ppl really need to keep their dogs on leashes.

Some guy told us that he yells “Get off the couch!” at loose dogs and finds that is works in most cases. Makes sense, right? A lot of dog owners don’t allow their dogs on couches and dogs will most likely react to this common command.

When I run at home, there is this dog named Radar that lives nearby. Almost every single run I go on, he trys to follow me. He really is the sweetest dog, but you have to tell him to “Go home” or he’ll follow you the whole run. But I’ve definitely had the opposite happen, where it was a not so nice dog. Scary! When my cousin and I were kids we were walking to my friend’s house when a BIG neighborhood dog got loose. The dog started chasing my cousin until she finally knocked on a (stranger) neighbor’s door and hopped inside, slamming the door shut.

I just calmly stood there and the dog ran right by me. My cousin is STILL frightened of dogs (and I’ll admit that this story is why I could never have a dog… gave me a fright too!)

Aww poor Maddie. πŸ™ I’m glad that she — and you! — are okay.

I live in a neighborhood with a TON of dogs. Most people are very responsible about keeping their dogs on a leash. However, there is one woman with several small, very poorly-trained dogs who apparently has no concept of the leash law. One of her dogs came after my dog when we were out walking. My poor dog literally jumped into my boyfriend’s arms, he was so scared. (In retrospect, it was sort of comical, being that my dog is a 50-pound hound/pit mix and, bless his heart, a total, total baby). My boyfriend and I were both livid at the time, and told the woman that we would call the police if we ever saw her walking her dogs without leashes again. I would be furious if my dog was ever harmed by another dog.
