Do these shoes make me look fast?

by Meghann on November 11, 2010

Confession: I’m not the best runner when it comes to purchasing new running shoes.

It has been months since I purchased my last pair (on July 5th to be exact) and I could definitely feel the need for a new pair.

My Brooks Glycerin 8s were as great of shoes as any runner could hope for. They were with me as I traveled to Chicago, New York, Colorado, Ft. Lauderdale, Myrtle Beach, Charlottesville, San Francisco, etc. They pushed me through three 5ks, a 10k, and a 15k. Heck they were even with me as I crossed the finish line at the Chicago Marathon last month! They were great shoes and they will be missed!

They were so great in fact, that I decided to order the exact same shoe all over again.

Only this time in purple. I had to switch it up a little bit. 😉

The best part about getting new shoes is being able to compare them to the old ones and seeing exactly how much hell you put the old ones through.

As you can see, I gave my old pair plenty of hell. 😉

I took my new shoes for a test run on the treadmill this morning and did a set of 8 Fartleks. They were so much softer than my old, worn out pair. I felt as if I was running on two cushiony pillows of love. 🙂 I still have three weeks to break them in for my marathon next month, but I think they’re going to be just fine!

P.S. This is one of those times when I should be preaching ‘Do what I say, Not what I do.’ Running shoes SHOULD be replaced every 350- 500 miles or every 3-4 months. NOT 6 months or however many miles I let slip by. Bad Meghann!

Pumpkin for breakfast anyone?

I have 5 cans of pumpkin staring at me from the pantry every morning. I’m trying to NOT be a hoarder and actually enjoy pumpkin when I feel like it. I have a nasty habit of ‘saving’ things until they expire or the season is over. Bummer.

Pumpkin Cereal

  • 1/2 cup Greenwise Flax Flakes
  • 1/2 cup Kashi Go Lean
  • 1/2 Frog Hollow Pear
  • Plain Yogurt
  • Pumpkin
  • Raisins
  • Pecans
  • Obscene amount of Pumpkin Spice

What it really looks like when I eat it. 😉

Mmmm…. tasty mush. Love it!

In case you missed it…

Last night I submitted a hiring video to wear shirts for a living. Seriously. 😉

Be sure to check it out by clicking here and while you’re at it feel free to share the link and leave a comment about how awesome (or not) I am. At the very least play the video and have  good laugh. I tried to include as many embarrassing clips as possible (including doing hula on the Wii in my one piece Christmas pajamas – I am not ashamed! 😉 )

Getting new running shoes is one of my favorite things. I was about to buy some new ones, but my bf brought my spare already broken in ones down from NY, and I think they will work until after my half.

I am pretty loyal to Asics running shoes and I usually buy the same model (or the updated version of the one I purchased before). I replaced mine about 3 weeks ago and I love doing a comparison too. I find I always go through the cushioning in the back of the heel first. Like you said, it’s a great reminder of everywhere you’ve been with the old shoes! 🙂

Those shoes look great. I usually stick to Nike. It has taken me a loooong time to find a pair of shoes that I love.

I’m the same about buying new shoes. I think I just get too attached!
But, I am determined to get a new pair this weekend! My birthday calls for it. (:

I let my running shoes go a lot more miles than that. No knee problems yet!

You were definitely due for a new pair! Just a little word of advice from runner to runner, my sister used to work for Road Runner Sports, I’m not sure if you’re familiar with them but they manufacture running shoes. She has always told me you should get new shoes after 300 miles. If you wait much longer than that you will be putting yourself at risk for injury, you don’t want that! 🙁

Wow what a difference in the shoes! Think you’ll run faster? 😉

Yes! You look like you’re going 20mph standing still!
Getting a new pair of shoes is so satisfying. I really need a new pair of running shoes too.

i’ve been hoarding food too. i’m pregnant and have this weird thing going on where i am really worried about having enough meals cooked and frozen for my husband and i to eat for a few weeks after baby arrives. some women probably worry about nursery’s or baby clothes. you know, normal-ish things. me? i am worried about what we are going to eat =)

I can’t watch videos at work, but I’ll check it out tonight.

I have a bet with my husband that blog friends are in fact my friends – leave me a comment today if you have time – I consider you my friend even though we’ve never met! 😀

Love the shoes!

PS – I just bought my “Meals & Miles” t-shirt! I plan on wearing it during my 1st 5k that I’ve trained for on Thanksgiving! :o)

I like the new shoes! Your breakfast looks *yummy* 🙂 I kind of have the habit of saving foods for too long instead of enjoying them haha!

How about getting a pair of Vibrams?

18 Jillian @ Reshape Your Life November 11, 2010 at 12:11 pm

I loved that part in the video, it took me a minute to figure out what you were doing because I was too busy laughing at the feetie pajamas 🙂 (laughing with you not at you!)

Good luck with the new shoes. I have a purple pair of Asics Gel Cumulus 12. I think the purple makes me faster. 🙂

I too am in desperate need of new running shoes! I’m so bad about keeping up with how long/how many miles it has been…but once my legs start to get achey and don’t recover nearly as quickly as usual…I know it’s about time. Happy running!

21 Di November 11, 2010 at 1:16 pm

I have those shoes, just different color and LOVE them. Ran a 1/2 marathon in Oct and not one blister 🙂

Whoa you wore out that heel!

I have looked at that website a few times now, and I still don’t get it? You just promise to wear different shirts and you get paid?

23 CharlotteRunner20 November 11, 2010 at 1:40 pm

I love my glycerins! Just got a new pair myself – has anyone done rotating shoes? I hear it’s the way to go but I have a tough time justifying the $$ up front. And, I l-o-v-e RoadRunnerSports! Sign-up for “VIP” online (only $1.99/year) and get free shipping and discounts! I still of course advocate supporting local running stores but the deals on RRS are great.

24 Jessica@tastyandtrim November 11, 2010 at 2:03 pm

I love going shopping for running shoes! I just bought a new pair of Nikes in September, but when I am due for a new pair I will definitely check out those Brooks Glycerin shoes. Not only do they sound like a fabulous running shoe, but they are quite fashionable 🙂 I love the purple ones!

I am SO BAD about my running shoes too! I don’t run as much as you do, but I let mine go like 8 or 9 months!! New shoes make all the difference:)

29 Margo November 11, 2010 at 2:58 pm

Just got a new pair of Brooks shoes today! Can’t wait to start breaking them in. I definitely am in the same boat as you and tend to wait too long.

30 Melissa November 11, 2010 at 4:30 pm

I just recently did the same thing with my shoes, a side by side view! I got hurt during my half marathon because I thought my shoes were still ok. Times flies, and I guess June still felt like a few weeks ago…I definitely recommend new shoes every 3-4 months for those who put them through hell like us 🙂

Check out my beat up shoes

I have Brooks Ravenna and they are the best running shoes I’ve ever had. Soooo much better than Nike (which I used to be loyal to). They just feel so good.

LOVE your post title!

I’m with you on the “save it til it expires” thing. It’s so disappointing, so I say indulge in that pumpkiny goodness as much as you want!

I always order the exact same running shoes – I wish they came in other colors though! I use a really simple excel document to chart the mileage so I know when I need new ones. As soon as a PT told me my shoes contributed to a past injury I got right on that, because not being able to run was the worst! I’ve been buying at least 2 cans of pumpkin every time I am at the store due to the fear of the day it will not longer be available – my cabinet is full of it!
