Ben + Derek = BFF

by Meghann on October 30, 2010

Sometimes it’s scary how similar my little brother and Derek are. Especially when they show up wearing the same shirt. ๐Ÿ™‚

Notice the similar sunglasses placement on the back of the neck, haircut, and Rock ‘n Run t-shirt. Love it.

I actually love how close the two of them have become – or even how close I’ve become with my younger brother in general – this past year. Growing up Ben always seemed to separate himself from my other siblings and I. He was the youngest (there’s a 4.5 year age difference) and the most outspoken out of all of us. When I graduated high school Ben was just starting middle school and when Kelly graduated, he started high school.

There was this big gap where Ben was ‘too cool’ to spend time with any of us. While I was coming home to visit on the weekends, he was too busy being a teenager to spend time with the family. There were a lot of family outings Ben was absent for.

It took some time, but thankfully he grew out of that ‘teenage rebel’ stage and remains one of my best friends. He calls to randomly hang out, picked up an interest in running, and now has no problem staying in to spend time with the fam. He’s my little brother and I love him to death. ๐Ÿ™‚

I think today was a good example of just how much our relationship has blossomed. around noon I got a random phone call from my brother asking if Derek and I wanted to go shopping with him and Ashley.

Shopping? You don’t have to ask me twice. ๐Ÿ˜‰

First we needed fuel for shopping. Derek and i met Ben and Ashley at Crave right by the ball for a late lunch.

I have driven by Crave a few times, but had never been inside before. I was impressed by the upscale casual atmosphere and delicious menu (all-american entrees with a modern twist).

We started with a gorgeous basked of hot bread.

Complete with spicy chipotle butter.

I had a piece of warm foccacia bread with the spicy butter.

The bread was fantastic. It was warm and doughy with the perfect amount of chewiness. ๐Ÿ™‚

The Savory Chicken Chop Chop Salad sounded like it was the perfect pairing to my love for all things sweet and savory.

Unfortunately when it arrived it fell a little flat.

The portion was small and the toppings were minimal. The flavor was there, but the staying power was not.

I finished my lunch then had a couple bites of Derek’s amazing burger (and some fries).

And stole a piece of Ashley’s pizza.

Next time I’d order the burger…. or pizza. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Shopping was a lot of fun. I did get a few things for myself, but I had more fun playing dress up with Derek.

Argyle sweaters are SEXXXXYYYY! ๐Ÿ˜‰

We shopped and shopped then hit up Starbucks for a little caffeine fix.

Tall Awake Tea Latte with one pump of Pumpkin Spice please. ๐Ÿ˜€

Derek and I had plans for a nice dinner out, but were too exhausted by the time we made it home to think about doing anything else. Instead an easy dinner at home and an ABC Family showing of Hocus Pocus seemed so much more appealing. ๐Ÿ™‚

On the left: roasted brussel sprouts, mushrooms, and parsnips.

On the right: left over Butternut Squash Lasagna filling heated with chickpeas and a drizzle of barbecue sauce (the barbecue was the winning ingredient in this combination)

Of course no Halloween weekend is complete without candy!

I know I’m sort of boycotting Halloween this year, but Hocus Pocus had me craving chocolate and what better way is there to celebrate than making your OWN candy? ๐Ÿ˜‰

1. Melt half a bag of dark chocolate chips with a spoonful of coconut oil.

2. Coat the bottom half of a mini muffin tin with the melted chocolate

3. Freeze for 10 minutes.

4. Add a spoonful of filling

(I picked the Naturally Nutty Toffee Butter Peanut Butter)

5. Top with the more chocolate

6. Freeze additional 15 minutes or until set.

7. Enjoy!

Now i just need some trick or treaters to share with. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Or not…..

Good Night!

Pumpkin Cinnamon Rolls Success

October 30, 2010

Up after 7:00… Running at 8:00… Breakfast at 11:00…. Who am I? Oh yeah, I’m a girl with no set plans for the day. Love it! ๐Ÿ™‚ My alarm was set for 6:45 this morning, but somehow the snooze button kept being hit and somehow I was enjoying it. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I had a mini Clif more ยป

Guests for Dinner

October 30, 2010

It’s the weekend. Woop! Woop! I believe Maddie was just as excited as I was to hear that news. She spent all afternoon doing laps around the apartment, then doing laps outside. And when our guests for the evening arrived she was all about playing fetch and licking them to death. She loves her Uncle more ยป
