Maddie’s Midnight Flight

by Meghann on September 13, 2010

Poor Maddie

Ever since I lost Abbie in the middle of the night over a year ago I am a bit paranoid of constantly checking up on Maddie while she sleeps. If she’s laying still I’ll poke her to make sure she’s still breathing and if I can’t see her I’ll hunt around the bed until I can.

Well, last night I woke up in a fit of hazy confusion when I couldn’t see Maddie by my side or feel her by my feet. I sat straight up and immediately whipped the covers off so I could check under my bed. Turns out Maddie was wrapped up in the covers right next to me the whole time. As I whipped the covers to the left Maddie came flying out from underneath of them. Poor thing went a full 6 inches in the air before landing on the soft, bouncy bed. I’ve never seen a more shocked dog!

Maddie immediately jumped off the bed and went to hide in my closet. I don’t think she liked being woken up like that.

I tried to make it up to her with a walk around the neighborhood this morning. After thirty minutes of sniffing, walking, and peeing I think she was finally able to forgive me for her midnight flight in the air. 🙂

Breakfast was a big bowl of cereal this morning.

  • 1/2 cup Uncle Sam’s Cereal
  • 1/2 cup Greenwise Oat Flakes
  • 1/2 cup Kix
  • 1 Peach
  • Plain Yogurt
  • Raisins
  • Honey Peanut Butter ( so close to the end of the jar = almost OIAJ time!)

I was about to pull into my office parking lot this morning when it suddenly occurred to me that I had an 8:00am doctors appointment – an excellent thing to remember at 7:58 when you’re on the north end of Orlando and your doctor’s office is on the east end. :/

After a quick call I was able to high tail it across town (woo hoo for non-existent Monday morning traffic!) and arrived only 15 minutes late! I gave myself a pat on the back for that one. 😉

The appointment went so-so.

Good news: my thyroid level is normal – take that family history!

Bad news: estrogen level still low – le sigh.

On the way back to the office I stopped at Starbucks for a little post-appointment treat.

You see that? M-E-G-H-A-N-N !!

You know how many times my name has been spelled right at Starbucks? ZERO! This was a historic first!

The barista was really nice too!

  • Me: I’ll have a Non-Fat Grande Awake Tea Latte w/ One pump of Pumpkin Spice
  • Barista: Great drink order. I’ll have to try that one later today.
  • Me: Thanks 🙂
  • Barista: Name
  • Me: Meghann
  • Barista: With an H?
  • Me: Yes! No one has ever asked that before. If you add a second N you may be the first person ever to spell my name right here
  • Barista: (while spelling my name correctly on the cup) I’ll take that challenge. (gives a devilish smile)

I should mention the barista was a really cute male and totally made my day. 😉

It’s the little things in life, right?

Poor Maddie! I freak out when I can’t see my dog, and she’s not little by any means. I definitely wouldn’t be able to launch her across the bed, though.

Yay for having your name spelled correctly. It’s weird b/c people misspell my name (or ask for verification) all the time. I didn’t realize that T-I-F-F-A-N-Y was no longer the most common spelling of my name.

(Double yay for cute, male baristas)

I am just as protective of our Mayfield. We started fostering her and her brothers when they were only 3 days old. When the other two passed away we became seriously overprotective of her. She would go the grocery store with us in a basket, to work with us in her bag, and if we couldn’t watch her the vet would babysit her. Even though it’s been over a year since then, I still poke her in the stomach when she gets too still or sleep with my back to her so I can feel her breathing. My parents don’t understand why we are different with her than our other two dogs, but she is our true baby. I just get so worried that the same problems that happened with her brothers will happen to her since she didn’t develop like other dogs who have their moms.

You aren’t the only overprotective dog mom. 🙂

I love that Starbucks combo, too — started ordering it after seeing it on your blog and stick with it on days I don’t want another cup of coffee. Need to track down some pumpkin spice to make my own at home, though.

My name isn’t hard to spell correctly but it always gets spelled wrong!! What a nice barista…don’t you love when people are nice on Monday mornings? Totally makes the week 100x better.

Oh poor Maddie! Lol, that is pretty funny though. My JRT is about 17 pounds so no amount of cover whipping would toss her in the air, but she did fall off the end of the bed one night.

She like to sleep under the covers so when she fell off, she took all the blankets with her. My husband and I were the ones in shock as the covers got suddenly ripped off! It made a nice sling for her so she didn’t crash on the floor though (since the sheets were tucked into the end of the bed).

Luckily, dogs don’t seem to harbor resentment for very long 🙂

Sounds like you made the barista’s day, as well! 🙂

Ohhh, poor Maddie! She’s lucky you take such great care of her, though. 🙂 I have the same problem at any cafe, restaurant, etc. where they ask for a name. Try spelling “Gavi”–it almost always comes out Gabi or Gaby or Gabbie. I usually end up giving them a different name that is easier to spell! Enjoy your day!

LOVE IT! I get my name spelled wrong a lot with a y instead ie or people just butcher it and give me Elli- which is a boys name. I love when barista’s, grocery store check out people, bank tellers, and the such are cute and willing to flirt a little. Makes my day better.

Poor Maddie, but I can’t help but laugh! My poor dog has fallen off the bed twice in the last week. I think he was sleeping on his back and just rolled off. Definitely hasn’t been his favorite way to wake up.

Nice story about the barista spelling your name right – and you really DO get compliments on that order!

15 Heather @ Side of Sneakers September 13, 2010 at 11:39 am

Aww poor Maddie! Haha it is the little things- I got starbucks this am too & the barista charged me extra for soy milk & shouldn’t have, so I got a coupon for a free drink- sweet! 😉

I have to chuckle a little because I can totally relate. I can be paranoid, and will check up on Bowser, and I’ve startled him more than a few times in the middle of the night. 😉 So tell Maddie she’s not the only one with an overprotective mama!

No one has ever gotten my name right. I’m usually Carla or Carley … once I was Carlene, and twice I’ve been Harley. 🙁

Poor Maddie! When our dog climbs in bed with us, he actually has his back to my husband AND USING HIS LEGS PUSHES ME OUT OF BED! Yep, and then when I get out of bed, he looks at me like “that’s right, bitch, step to the side!”

He’s very possessive of my husband!

I actually laughed outloud at the Maddie story. LMAO!! I’m still laughing as I type this. HILARIOUS! Glad your test results came back good (for the most part). Super impressed that you remembered the appointment (and went).

22 Marisa! September 13, 2010 at 12:29 pm

I honestly just laughed out loud when I read the story about Maddie. I check on my dog during the night all of the time because he is only 5 lbs and loves to sleep under all of the covers and can hide very easily. 🙂 Good to hear Maddie is ok!

23 Elizabeth September 13, 2010 at 12:31 pm

What does it mean if your estrogen level is low?

24 Evan Thomas September 13, 2010 at 12:35 pm

I don’t use my real name when ordering coffee. I use it as an excuse to pretend I’m someone else. Good fake names: Brody, Cole, Lucius(that’s a fun one)

25 Lisa September 13, 2010 at 12:37 pm

I understand your panic. My kitties are my BABIES! I worry about them all the time. Fat Kitty (his nickname, out of love of course) once escaped in the middle of the night out the bathroom window. I was in a hysterical PANIC trying to find him at 3am. I couldn’t find him. I’d only had him a few days, I loved him dearly already, and I was worried he’d get hit by a car. My apartment at the time was on a busy street.

I left the front door open, put a bowl of food on the porch and laid down on my bed sobbing. Two seconds later, the little monkey appeared and nudged me like “What’s wrong with you?” Ever since then I’ve been a worrier. 🙂

Your maddie story made me crack up. I am also super paranoid puppy mama. My pup got parvo after his 3rd day of being with us. Luckily he survived. But ever since he has a super sensitive tummy and I freak out every time because it reminds me of the parvo situation where he almost died.

28 allijag September 13, 2010 at 1:01 pm

Oh Honey! 🙁 I do that all the time and I didn’t even go through what you’ve been through! I’m 110% positive – Maddie understands its just her mommy lovin’ her so darn much! 😉

Thank you for sharing that hilarious little story about Maddie. I seriously starting laughing out loud at my desk. My co-worker thinks I am a a little crazier than before, but that story made my day 🙂 I can relate to the name thing, for some reason whenever I tell people my name, it is always spelled with an “E”. So now I say, Stacy with no E. Thanks! 🙂

I have a question about your amazingly adorable puppy. 🙂 She is a Jack Russel, right? I’m wondering because if she IS, aren’t they supposed to be crazy and hyper? Do you exercise her all the time? Is she a barking maniac? She just seems so mellow in all of your blog posts … I’m looking for an apartment dog myself, as I don’t have an yard …. She’s cute to boot.

39 Meghann September 13, 2010 at 8:39 pm

Yes, she is a Jack Russell and yes, she does have her moments when she get’s hyper, but she’s mainly a pretty chill dog. I walk her three times a day and let her run around when ever possible. She rarely barks and when she does there’s generally a good reason. 🙂

40 Emily @ The Front Burner Blog September 13, 2010 at 5:24 pm

I still remember when you lost Abbie. I was so sad. 🙁 I am a freak about my dogs too – constantly convinced they are dying, and always checking on their breathing. It drives Casey insane and reaaaaally scares him for what is to come when we have kids!

Charlie – my boxer cross – only sleeps on the bed when my partner is away as I hate being alone. He fell off the bed one night. It was hilarious. He just sat there looking around as if to say “what the….”

My name is spelled the way it sounds but a number of times (and always in a work situation) due to peoples inability to type, I have been addressed as “Dear Oral…..”

lets just say it gets very awkward when I have to reply to a work email and start it with _eh you seem to have spelled my name wrong!!

46 jeri September 15, 2010 at 1:32 pm

I took a picture the first (and only) time mine was spelled right too! Yay random spelled names. 🙂
