Staying Active in Chicago

by Meghann on August 13, 2010

Let’s do this thing

This morning I took my very first run around Chicago. No, I didn’t run anywhere near the marathon route (at least I don’t think so?) BUT, I did have some incredible views of Lake Michigan and the city along the way. πŸ™‚

Sarah and Leslie met me at the hotel lobby early this morning for a quick 6 mile out and back. And thanks to a million suggestions from the wonderful Chicago locals (this city rocks!) we knew there was a lake trail basically right out our front door.

The run by the water was beautiful! It reminded me of my runs in Long Beach last year. There was a nice breeze coming off the water, the trail was full of like minded fitness focused individuals, it was hard to get lost, and there were water fountains every so often – score!

PLUS, you can’t beat running with two inspiring beautiful ladies who have no problem keeping the conversation constantly flowing during the run. I think we could have easily kept talking for miles and miles. Love these girls!

Big thanks to Leslie for all the above photos that I bribed from her (Hope you enjoy the Oh Nuts swag! πŸ˜‰ ).

We took the 6 miles easy and averaged a little less than 9:30 minutes miles. πŸ™‚

After the run I quickly grabbed my camera and met a gang of HLS friends at the Corner Bakery a couple of blocks from the hotel.

HLS attendees: be on the look out for Sabrina! She’s giving out adorable bags and she’s as sweet as pie. πŸ˜‰

My breakfast

I had purchased a raw Carrot Cake Muffin from the Chicago Raw restaurant last night and saved it for breakfast this morning.

It was very dense, fruity, and a little dry. At first I thought it was just ok, but then Kath shared some of her peanut butter to pair with my bites. The addition of the peanut butter brought the muffin from so-so to yum. But, doesn’t PB make everything better?

Looks can be deceiving and this muffin packed a big punch – I could only eat about half and saved the rest in my bag for little nibbles through out the day.

To go with my muffin I ordered a yogurt & berry parfait from the counter.

Kath had researched a few hot yoga studios in the Chicago area and had invited anyone along who wanted to join her for a 75 minute class.

Core Power Yoga is a BEAUTIFUL studio atop a parking garage structure. The location looks funny on the outside, but the views inside the studio are gorgeous!

We had the reflection of the Chicago skyline facing us for the entire class. How amazing would it be to have that beautiful view every time you practiced? Amazing!

The people at Core Power Yoga were great. Thanks to a Free week of yoga deal they have our class was completely free. They also threw in complimentary lockers, yoga mats, and towels – nothing but the best here!

Side note: I <3 Emily! I’m so happy to finally meet her in person! I remember when her blog was still called Marathon, Marrying, and Milestones and I was raving about her in one of my follow Fridays posts. She’s all grown up now!

The class itself was a little different then I was used to. It was slower and not flowy. I missed my vinyasas and quick changes, but it was nice to get the feel of another form of hot yoga in my system.

The morning flew by! It’s time to hunt down an authentic Chicago lunch. Chicago Hot Dogs anyone? Yum!

I love Core Power Yoga! I was in Colorado for a conference and they gave me a week free too. I wish they had one near me.

Sounds like you ladies are keeping Healthy Living Summit very healthy. Have a blast!

LOVE Chicago (partially cuz I live there)

If you get a hot dog, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT, ask for ketchup. It’s just not done!

While you’re here you should also check out Gino’s East (for pizza) Karyn’s Raw (for raw food), and Ann Sather’s (for incredible cinnamon rolls)

Enjoy Chi-town! πŸ˜€

When I run at lunch I run exactly where you did. Have you noticed the big, red building that says CNA on the top? I work next to that building. I just grabbed lunch from that same Corner Bakery!

I did the free week of yoga at the Core Power Yoga near my house and loved it. I don’t like flow-y yoga so it was perfect for me!

Can’t wait to see where you’re going next!

Nice handstand! They used to be my specialty when I was a gymnast.

When I went to Chicago 5 years ago I was 250 pounds and NOT a runner! I would love to go back to Chicago now and run down by the water. What a gorgeous place!

It must be so nice to be in a city that has trails like that!

Nice pictures in the studio! When I see rooms like that I feel like dancing all over the place.

I keep getting a weird link to Emily’s blog…

22 runningwithsass August 13, 2010 at 5:23 pm

what a beautiful place to run! love it!

23 Lexa August 13, 2010 at 5:43 pm

It sounds like you’ve had the best foodie/fitness day ever! That run sounds especially amazing; it looks absolutely gorgeous out there. I have to remind myself that Chicago gets nasty and cold in the winter in order to quell the jealous monster!

24 Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) August 13, 2010 at 5:48 pm

Looks like you are starting your weekend off on the right foot! The city looks beautiful! What a great place to be right now! Have fun!

25 deliciouswellness August 13, 2010 at 8:27 pm

I LOVE Core Power Yoga! I used to go to the one in Boulder, CO (when I was there for school) practically every single day. I think you might like the actual Core Power class (rather than the Hot Power fusion) better. They are much faster and they include an ab workout in the middle (not sure if HP Fusion did or not). I’m so jealous that you got to experience Core Power! Where I live now in California doesn’t have ANY power yoga studios. Big bummer!

Have fun tonight!

26 Rachel (@Smile Out Loud) August 14, 2010 at 1:26 am

Looks like you’re having SO MUCH FUN in Chicago!! Jealous! and your dress is gorgeousssss, girl… please tell me where you got it?

Can’t wait to keep reading πŸ˜€

27 Emily @ The Front Burner Blog August 14, 2010 at 8:31 am

Awwww LOVE it! It is so fun to finally get to hang out in person when I already knew I would like you so much. πŸ™‚ Excited to run tomorrow!!
