Open Water vs. The Pool

by Meghann on May 26, 2010

Welcome to Hump Day everyone!

This morning I took to the pool for a 45 minute swim session before booking it to cycling class.

I kept it casual in the pool by doing a few free style laps and then using the kickboard for a few more.

I realized something in the pool today – I hate swimming in the pool!

I’ve been spoiled by open water swims lately and the pool is a little boring in comparison.  It’s just like with running – I hate the treadmill, but LOVE to run outside. I sometimes feel like I can only last 30 minutes on a treadmill at a time, but could run for hours outside. Likewise, in the pool I feel the need to take a break after every lap – a bad habit I am trying to break – but in an open water swim I feel as if I can swim a whole kilometer without stopping!

I realize that just as the treadmill has its place in running – Hello, speedwork! – the pool has its place in swimming. I really need to work on my form and my kick, so for now I will keep incorporating pool work outs into my routine…even though I’ll be doing them with a pouty face. 😉

I seem to have an un-ending supply of nut butter lately (I am NOT complaining!) and currently have 2 or 3 near empty jars waiting to be made into something fabulous.

Last night I dug into my near-empty stash and prepped a breakfast of Overnight Oats in a Jar for this morning.

  • 1/2 cup Rolled Oats
  • Plain yogurt
  • Almond Milk
  • Chia Seeds
  • Raisins
  • Cacao Nibs
  • Cinnamon

Strawberries + Blueberries

Near Empty Jar = Non-Existent Jar 😉

A how-to video for Overnight Oats is on my list of video tutorials I want to make. I just need to find someone willing to film me, I tried doing it all on my own last night and was not successful at all! I think I need to invest in a tri-pod? hmmm…

Even though Im a seasoned swimmer I too find the pool to be a bit boring at times! I wish they pumped music in some underwater speakers!

Yum! OIAJ is the best, any way you go! I’ve never tired overnight oats in a jar though.. only regular oats. But summer is a perfect time to try it!

I feel exactly the same way about treadmill/pool vs. outside exercise. There is something about the scenery, the air, and taking in the sights that makes being outside so much more exciting and invigorating than working out inside. I will be doing a tri in the fall, and I will be lucky if I can get in one open water swim. Do you have any tips and suggestions about preparing for this part of the tri in the pool? Thanks in advance! 🙂

I’m outdoorsy too. I’m just not comfortable working out in a gym. Good for you for sticking with the pool though just to improve your form!

too bad. i totally wanted to win!

I know what you mean about swimming in a pool! I just wrote in my blog about how much I hate it… it makes me go slightly crazy!

I’m eating down my jar of AB as fast as possible to make OIAJ soon.

I’m kind of the same way with yoga. Podcasts and dvd’s are OK, but I much prefer the interest and the variety of a class. I haven’t yet tried an outdoor class, though- I wonder if I would love those even more?

I am joining a gym with a pool! A park district right by our office just opened up, and because I work in the district, I get the district discount – only $31 a month for a state of the art gym – sweet! And spin classes – woot!

That was one thing my husband said when I did my tri “you can’t put your foot down in a lake!” Happy hump day and congrats to Lo!

your oats in a jar look awesome!
I like to swim in the pool, but I prefer the sea, of course. I never tried it in a lake though, it kinda freaks me out.

Yay Lo!!!!

15 Jenna May 26, 2010 at 10:38 am

17 Kelly May 26, 2010 at 11:33 am

Ok, I’ve got to ask about Cacao Nibs. I have seen them on a few other blogs, and am currious as to what they are.

I’ve only swum in natural water a few times in my life, it kind of creeps me out! I worry that something is going to bite me, lol.

OIAJ are sooo yummy. 🙂

I hate running on the treadmill but way up north it is a necessity for many months of the year so I make do with TV shows i love as motivation. I can’t get off until the show is over.

Congrats on your triathlon! I’ve been stalking your blog for a while and decided to leave you a comment. I know, finally!! 🙂 I enjoy reading about your athletic adventures and your cooking, too. I did a few short tris before I had kids (10 years ago!!) and i’m thinking of getting back into it. Thanks for the great blog and postings!!

22 Carolyn H May 26, 2010 at 2:55 pm

I love lake swimming as well but I live up north and the only thing I worry about is a few trout tickling my toes. Don’t you worry about swimming with the gators and snakes!!??!!

Pool workouts are much more fun if you:

a) have a fun plan with intervals/drills etc; or
b) work out with a group!

I’ve been lucky enough to train with some great squads over the past few years- it’s AWESOME!

24 Lisa @bakebikeblog May 26, 2010 at 5:44 pm

haha I hate treadmilss – but am definitely more confident swimming in the pool than in open water….

25 Katherine: What About Summer? May 26, 2010 at 6:20 pm

all I can say is thank goodness it’s hump day!
this week is killing me

26 Carolyn @ May 26, 2010 at 10:41 pm

I’ve been doing laps to train for my tri in July, but the swim actually takes place in a pool, so that’s fine for me. I wish I could afford swim lessons, though.

Check out the GorillaPod by Joby – you can pick one up on Amazon for about $20. It’ll be too small for your SLR, but if you’re taking video with a Flip or a point & shoot, it’ll be just right. I picked one up a few months ago and I love it.
