Short Hair and Running

by Meghann on January 30, 2010

Good morning!

This morning Derek and I woke up bright and early (well, bright and early for him – sleeping in for me) and took off on a beautiful 5 mile run.

I’m not sure if I mentioned this on here or not, but Derek is training for the Gasparilla 15k. I designed a training plan for him that he has been following diligently. This will be his longest distance to date and he is very excited about achieving this new goal.

The race is just over a month away and I know he will rock it. πŸ™‚

We completed the 5 miles in just over an hour. We took it easy and walked here and there when Derek needed it.

On the run we discussed creating an elaborate delicious breakfast when we got back to the apartment, but by the time the run was over all I really wanted was a big bowl of cereal with pumpkin yogurt.

Mmm… love it.

  • 1/3 cup Honey Puffed Rice
  • 1/3 cup Kashi Go Lean
  • 1/3 cup Kashi Warm Cinnamon H2H
  • 1/3 cup Homemade Granola
  • Pumpkin Yogurt (Plain yogurt + pumpkin + pumpkin spice)
  • Chelsea’s Cranberry Jam
  • 1/2 Apple

I knew the Cranberry Jam + Pumpkin combination would be fantastic! Yum!

A few of you were inquiring on running with my new shorter do. So, I thought I would fill you in with my little secret: Pigtails!

My hair is too short for a ponytail at the moment, but pigtails work just fine!

I also am a big fan of head bands or bobby pins for keeping the bangs out of my face. πŸ™‚

Derek and I randomly decided to head to Universal for the day. Hopefully since its the middle of January the crowds shouldn’t be too bad. *Fingers Crossed*

I rock the pigtails with my shorter hair too! I always tell the girl who cuts my hair that she can do whatever she wants to it as long as I can somehow pull it out of my face when I’m running.

2 Jamie (Food in Real Life) January 30, 2010 at 11:54 am

Your hair looks great!

3 theprocessofhealing January 30, 2010 at 11:59 am

Yay for Derek and good luck to him with the race! I think it’s so cool how you have inspired him. Many times we take on the unhealthy habits of our loved ones but for you guys, just the opposite. So cool πŸ™‚

Pigtails are cute! I use bobypins to keep my bangs out of my face. Headbands never stay on my head.. don’t know why that is.

4 Kayla January 30, 2010 at 12:00 pm

Yay for Derek, good luck to him!
Your hair looks really good like that. It’s a challenge to come up for ideas to style short hair, especially when it’s thick!
Your breakfast looks really good too!

Cute pigtails, I just chopped my hair in Dec and I’m starting to get annoyed that it falls out of the ponytail! Maybe I’ll try some pigtails.

6 Karla January 30, 2010 at 12:09 pm

Pigtails are a must with short hair!
Have fun at Universal! I wish I could randomly go to a theme park!!

7 Danielle January 30, 2010 at 12:19 pm

I like your new hair cut! My hair is way to long to rock the pig tails…
Congrats for Derek πŸ™‚

8 Erin January 30, 2010 at 12:24 pm

Cute! I don’t understand people who run without pulling their hair back — it would drive me crazy!

9 Allie (Live Laugh Eat) January 30, 2010 at 12:26 pm

Run Derek Run!!! (you too Meghann) Cutest pigtails ever. Have a great Saturday!

10 Heather (Heather's Dish) January 30, 2010 at 12:28 pm

11 tramey1 January 30, 2010 at 12:29 pm

I’m doing the Gasparilla Half Marathon the same day! Exciting! Derek will rock it out!

12 Island Girl Eats January 30, 2010 at 12:31 pm

Well done Derek! That is so exciting about the 15k. Keep up the good work. You will do great!

My hair is about your length and I rock the pigtails when I run too! I think it looks cute!

13 Cassie January 30, 2010 at 12:42 pm

yes! pigtails are key. i was rocking the double pigtail for a while (the top half in one rubberband, and then another big rubberband for the rest of the hair.) because my hair was so short! I’m so close to a full ponytail now and i cant wait! i will miss my pigtails a little bit though πŸ™‚

have fun with the short hair!

14 Anna January 30, 2010 at 12:57 pm

Yep– I rock the pigtails too with my short hair! Sometimes even when I’m not at the gym πŸ™‚

15 Heather January 30, 2010 at 12:58 pm

Pigtails is definitely the way to go with shorter hair πŸ™‚ I love that Derek is enjoying sharing your passion with you–it’s so cool to be able to do something like that together πŸ™‚

16 Erica January 30, 2010 at 1:05 pm

21 runningd0wnadream January 30, 2010 at 1:42 pm

the hair looks cute! mine is about that length and it drives me crazy, i’ll have to try the pigtails.

22 Lily @ Lily's Health Pad January 30, 2010 at 2:25 pm

Love thie pigtails! I’ve never thought of that. My hair is quite short too, and usually I look like a Chinese gymnast with all the ckips and bobby pins needed to keep in it in a ponytail.

23 Andrea of Care to Eat January 30, 2010 at 3:00 pm

I LOVE your green top! T-backs are my fav πŸ™‚

24 Laura Georgina January 30, 2010 at 4:19 pm

Pigtails with short hair are so cute! My hair is farily short, too, but I don’t rock them nearly enough πŸ™‚

25 Running on Faith January 30, 2010 at 4:57 pm

I did the same thing with my short hair and running! And congrats to Derek! It is SO nice to see that you are sharing the same passion for running now πŸ™‚ it is definitely contagious!

26 adrienmelaine January 30, 2010 at 5:15 pm

pig tails are the best for running with short hair! as are the american apparel head bands- they actually stay on your head and don’t move- every other headband I try falls off- these dont

27 Lesley January 30, 2010 at 5:47 pm

Love your new hair color and cut! It looks really nice.

Question for you–when you run (especially races) where do you keep your camera, phone, snacks, etc. Do you have a “fanny pack” type thing or just stuff everything in pockets?

28 lindsayruns January 30, 2010 at 5:53 pm

Like hell you need bronzer….you look great! Mine is too short for even pigtails, I go with headband, just the top half, or my favorite…wait for the sweat to build up the first few miles and then slick it down!

29 Erin @ Erin Eats and Exercises January 30, 2010 at 6:17 pm

Your hair looks great, love the color!

30 lessonstolearn January 30, 2010 at 6:29 pm

I love the pig tails! Very cute new do!

It would be so cool to be able to decide to go to Disney or Universal on a whim! You live in quite a place!

31 Emily January 30, 2010 at 7:02 pm

I’m a post late, but your hair cut is adorable! I’m planning on getting a very similar cut after I run my half marathon (the pigtail thing doesn’t work for me).

32 livealittlebetter January 30, 2010 at 7:07 pm

I feel your pain on short workout hair! I lose count of the bobby pins.

Let us know how the Harry Potter stuff looks at Universal!

33 Amber from Girl with the Red Hair January 30, 2010 at 7:31 pm

I have a cut similar to yours – but a bit shorter and I am a huge fan of either a headband or a hat when I’m running!

34 abbynormally January 30, 2010 at 9:19 pm

I have short hair too and totally rock the pigs tails on runs!

35 jenna January 30, 2010 at 9:49 pm

bowl of cereal looks great!!

36 whydontcharun January 30, 2010 at 10:47 pm

I love the piggy tails! πŸ˜‰ I recently chopped my hair off (a lot) and love, love, love how light it is while running.

37 Kate January 31, 2010 at 1:28 am

Your pigtails are adorable!

38 jenngirl January 31, 2010 at 10:13 am

Those pigtails are not only functional, but so cute on you as well! πŸ™‚ And I LOVE your running top!

39 Michelle February 1, 2010 at 3:27 pm
