Early Alarm Call

This morning my alarm went off and per usual I let Maddie out and started eating my usual 1/4 piece of a Clif bar in anticipation of my morning run. It wasn’t until I opened my lap top to check my e-mail that I actually looked at a clock and saw that it was only 1:05am. WTF?

Some how, some way the alarm on my phone went off around 1:00am. There was never any alarm set for the time, nor was there any calendar reminders or messages that I know of that came in at 1:00am. Why my phone went off I will never know, but I happily crawled back in bed to sleep another well deserved 4 hours.

Can you believe that it was harder to get up the second time my alarm went off at 5:30am opposed to when it went off at 1:00? My body was so confused!

The second time I triple checked the time before repeating my morning routine for the second time of the day.

I took off for a fun 5 mile run and decided to push myself in the middle. The first mile I held a 9:00 min pace, for 2-4 I kept under 8:30, and the last mile I went back to a 9:00 min pace. I’ve found turning a run into a tempo run makes it a little more exciting as it adds a bit of a challenge.

Breakfast was something I’ve been meaning to try for a while: Chia Seed Pudding.


I’ve seen plenty of Chia Seed Pudding recipes on other blogs, but all involved complicated instructions I didn’t have the time for or ingredients I didn’t have on hand. Finally Brittany post what to me looked like a dumbed down version of Chia Seed Pudding that was not complicated and contained ingredients I actually recognized!

Here is my adaptation of Britney’s original recipe

  • 1/4 cup chia seeds
  • 3/4 cup fat free milk
  • 1 small packet Amazing Grass Chocolate Powder for kids
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Everything was combined in a bowl last night and left in the fridge over night. This morning it looked like a big blob of seed gelatin.


To pump the pudding up I topped the bowl with strawberries, chocolate chips, homemade granola, and a big blob of almond butter.


At first I really enjoyed the chia seed pudding, especially the bites with the almond butter and strawberries. But, then the strawberries and almond butter disappeared and all that was left was the pudding. The taste was ok, but the jelly texture threw me off. Suddenly I wasn’t enjoying it at all anymore and a good quarter of the bowl went in the trash.


I think I want to make this again, but instead of just having a bowl of straight up chia seed pudding I would use it as a cereal topping or something. Or just have the bowl 50% strawberries and 50% pudding. 🙂

I have big lunch plans with a fun group of girls. Can’t wait for the break in my day!

i’m a texture person, and gelatinous just doesn’t appeal to me. the strawberries and almond butter look great though!

I’ve done that with the alarm before! And I agree–it’s WAY worse to wake up the second time around….

Too bad the chia pudding got a bit gross! It just needs to be Meghann-ized a bit more.

Not sure about that pudding, haha. I like my food to look as good as it tastes! I can’t believe you woke up at 1AM. That would never happen to me, because I hit snooze about 3 times and always make sure I HAVE to get out of bed before I do, hahaha.

This is crazy because I finally decided to try the pudding today, too! It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t the best, either. Poor Brittany got two name spellings! Lol.

Oh that does look strange! I’ve never seen chia seeds, are they like linseeds?
Haha my alarm does that on a regular basis, I think it just likes to keep me on my toes, not let me slack off 😛 at least it made you appreciate that extra 4hrs!!

That’s a lot of chia seeds (and thus, a lot of chia seed pudding!). I agree that it’s something that is best in small doses!

I’ve never have had chia seeds because I can’t find them around me (anyone near DC know where they are?), but like Megan said, I’m a texture person and don’t like gelled things. Custards and jello never really tempt me, but I do think it could be good in smoothies.
I hate when that happens with an alarm, but at least you got to sleep more…. 🙂

Once my aunt woke up because he alarm went off and got ready for work (shower, dressed, breakfast) and looked at the clock and it was 2am!

With my sleep schedule being so jacked up for working split shifts at the radio station… it always seems that when i wake up at 230am.. i am always wide awake… yet at 345 am when the alarm goes off i struggle…. i think our bodies shut down at a certain time.. maybe.

Same thing almost happened to me – I had such a hard time falling asleep and I went to bed at 10:30! I finally dosed off and when I woke up, I put on my glasses to turn off my alarm before it went off so as to not wake my husband, but when I looked at the clock it was 4:15 a.m.! And when the alarm went off at 7 I didn’t want to get up!

Plus its 17 degrees out – a day when I want to stay under the covers. Have fun at your lunch! 😀

Lol! Too funny. That has happened to me before too. At least you checked the clock and noticed the time. Isn’t it weird how our bodies work? I woke up around 4 am the other day, and could have bolted out of bed. I made myself go back to sleep and could hardly get up at 6. Uggg.

Texture can really ruin things for me, too, so totally understand throwing the rest away. How did you get up at 1:00am?! I would be in a sleepy daze.

That is so funny that you got up at 1 AM and started doing your thing!!!! Haha. The worst I ever did was wake me and my boyfriend up an hour early (at 5 instead of 6) and was like “omg we’re going to be late” and we started rushing to get ready and then realized we had LOTS of time!

I don’t think I could ever make that mistake because I’m an alarm clock snoozer in the mornings so I’m always looking at the time to see how much more time I can get away with lying in bed!

How do you manage to just bounce out of bed in the mornings? I’m impressed!!

i’m glad you did an honest review on this stuff. i’ve been seeing chia seed pudding all over bloggerland, and am honestly a little scared to try it!

I am the same way! For some reason, early early alarms don’t bother me as much as ones around 5 or 6. Weird!! And I’ve been wanted to try the pudding recipe too, but I can understand that it may have a funny texture to it! Nice job with the tempo runs! I’ve been incorporating them into my workouts too and they are definitely helping speed!

That’s hilarious because the same thing happened to me last night. My alarm clock has the option to set 2 alarms and I had one set for 7:15 and one set for 12:00 AM because I had recently unplugged the clock and not updated both alarms… I accidentally set the 12 am one! Luckily the first thing I do is check my phone and I realized that it wasn’t the right time and went back to bed but it was hard falling back asleep!!

Your bfast looks like dessert… yum, what a great way to start the day 🙂

ahh i’ve always avoided the chia concoctions for the same reason – the texture freaks me out. i can’t imagine eating a big bowl of jelly… yuck.

I put it in yogurt and it has the same plumping/gelatin affect with more taste. I also add fruit right to the yogurt mix and leave it in there.

That is so funny. That happened to me once.

I was on vacation and it was my first day in London. We got in late and we needed to get up early the next morning for a tour. So, I woke up and thought the alarm said 7:00. So, I quickly flipped off the alarm and got up and took a shower. I was SO groggy that I could barely stand myself. Finally i come out of the shower and the clock says 1:10. I had only been asleep for an hour!!! lmao

I really really want to try chia seeds because they are so good for you but I’m a texture person too.. not sure I’d like it at all.

That’s odd about your alarm, that’s happened to me too before. Who knows why..

I’ve been adding chia seeds to my protein smoothie shakes. I make them in advance so I can take to work or have it ready for breakfast in the morning. The chia seeds gel up making the smoothie thicker. Well last night for work I pulled at my smoothie and it was more gel like then usual. I’m glad I brought some granola/pumpkin seeds for the top or else I don’t think I could of stomach the texture.

this looks so good! i have been meaning to buy some chia seeds. I think it would be really good as 0% strawberries and 50% pudding – you should try it tomorrow!

I love chia seeds, definitely try it on top of cereal. That is how I eat the seeds.
