It’s race day!

by Meghann on January 10, 2010

I have this set to publish at precisely 5:40am EST which – god willing – should be when I start slowly making my way from my corral to the starting line.

Hopefully, I am keeping warm under all the layers I plan to toss as soon as the race begins and, hopefully, my shoes are tied tight and all my electronics are in working order.

The journey to this particular starting line has been a long one. Once I cross that start line I will officially be running my second full marathon. My second marathon? Who am I?!?! I was the girl who hated to run to the end of the street. I was the girl who was 20 pounds over weight and so unsure of who she was.

Now, I am running my second marathon. Now, I have goals. Now, I know who I am. I am Meghann and I am awesome!

You can read about my running journey leading up to my first marathon here.

My journey to running the Disney marathon actually began before I even considered running the San Diego Marathon. You can trace back exactly a year ago when I volunteered at the 2009 Disney Marathon and that desire developed.

Volunteering at that race inspired me. I immediately knew right then and there that I could run a marathon, more so that I could run THIS marathon. However, I got impatient and signed up to run the San Diego marathon a couple of weeks later. But Disney was still in my hear and just days after finishing San Diego I registered for Disney.

I took the summer off from training and when September came I hit it full force with a 16 week plan I developed and showcased here.

Along the way I learned to love tempo runs, strides, and other various forms of speed work. The additional training not only made me a stronger runner, but a faster one too.

While training I earned personal records in my 5k, 10k, 15k, and half marathon times. I also slowly built my weekend mileage up until the 17, 18, and 20 miles were just like any other runs.

The great part about this marathon is the friends I have out there to share it with. Its as if the Disney Marathon has taken on a life of its own. Not only do I have all my friends at home to run it with, but so many other bloggers and readers whose journeys I have been following along the way.

My Sister has joined me on the journey this time around. This will be her first marathon and I know I am rooting hard for her. Unfortunately we won’t be running it side by side as originally planned, but I know she will succeed and I know she will dominate this race!

Marathon Training by the numbers:

In the 16 weeks I have been training for the Disney Marathon I have:

  • Ran a total of 525.88 miles
  • Competed in 6 races
  • Earned 4 PRs
  • Celebrated 3 major holidays
  • Traveled 3 times

I also drank lots of beer, ate lots of food, and enjoyed life!

I am READY for this marathon. I Will do this. I am a MACHINE.

I am just now trying to catch up on your marathon blog posts but wanted to say that between you and Caitlin, I have been really inspired. On the flight to Jamaica last month hubs came across a page in a magazine about the Reggae Marathon that happens every Dec. in Jamaica and told me that we were going to do it. Imagine that…I don’t run, never have run and he wants me to do this race with him. We have decided on the 1/2 marathon and I will do a 5k locally and possibly more before that. I am very scared! I do workout on a consistent basis (spin 3x a week, in-home workouts, cardio at the gym, etc.) so it’s not like I’m going into this with no experience in working out but running as I have read about is a whole different ball of wax. LOL

Off to read your marathon recap!
