Good Ole Friends

by Meghann on September 28, 2008

Another of my many reasons I moved to Orlando was because of a core group of friends I’ve had since middle school that just happened to all be in the Orlando area. We all parted ways for college… I went to Tallahassee, one went to Gainesville, one went to Miami and one stayed put… but we’ve all managed to make our way back to O-town. Though we don’t all get together often, when ever we do it feels nice to know these girls will always have my back.

Tonight we all met up at Firkin & Kegler to celebrate Christie’s big 2-4. I have driven by the HUGE establishment a zillion times but have never been. It’s basically an upscale arcade aimed towards adults. They have an awesome full scale bowling ally, 5 bars, a dance floor, an arcade, restaurant and a million tvs with any football game you could think of playing. Before I went people were comparing this place to a Dave & Busters, and let me tell you this place put Dave & Busters to shame!

When I first discovered we were eating at the restaurant inside the arcade I was little scared of the food choices available. I studied the menu intensely before I left the apartment and was confident that I could make a semi healthy choice at the restaurant.

I knew there would be beer and cake on the menu for dinner tonight so for my entree I chose something light. I ordered the Goat Cheese and Grilled Vegetable Salad.

I had asked for the balsamic vinaigrette dressing on the side, but when the salad arrive there was dressing drizzled on top. Luckily the dressing was not heavy at all and the amount they drizzled was a perfect amount. Usually if the salad comes predressed I find myself merely eating dressing and not being able to taste the veggies at all. This salad was perfect and I enjoyed every bite.

On the side I couldn’t resist order sweet potato fries.

My friends and I had an interesting discussion over dinner concerning the fact I was dipping my sweet potato fries in ketchup. Apparently they all got a big kick out of it, I honestly never thought of it as something weird, but it seems to be something that haunts me. When I was little and used to order baked sweet potatoes atΒ  restaurants I used to ask for sour cream and butter on them(not something I would do anymore), but the waiter would always look at me funny and go ” are you sure?” and then when the sweet potato arrived at the table they would always have cinnamon butter on the side ‘just in case.‘ I was never one who paired cinnamon/sugar with sweet potatoes. I think sweet potato as a fry goes perfectly with ketchup and not something sickenly sweet. What do you dip you sweet potato fries in?

I was fully aware before dinner of the generous beer selection available at the pub. There were plenty of yummy choices of beer on tab and I couldn’t resist ordering something to complete my meal. I am a HUGE wheat beer fan and had heard of Shock Top in the past, so when I saw it on tab I had no problem deciding what i wanted.

The Shock Top was perfect. My friend was generous enough to trade with me so I could drink from the official Shock Top glass compared to the oddly shaped glass I was originally served. I guess I’m weird about my beer glasses.

Of course no birthday celebration would be complete without CAKE!

I had a small piece of the marble birthday cake, it was from Publix.. who could resist?

I had a great night with great friends!Β  It really was the perfect place to get together for a celebration with a large group of friends. If you are in the Orlando area I would highly suggest Firkin & Kegler for some old school fun. I was too poor to actually bowl or waste my money in the arcade, but sitting at the bar catching up with old friends worked for me too. Another great ending to another great day.

It’s been a long day and my bed is calling my name! Good night everyone!!

I dip my sweet potato fries in ketchup, mustard, or mayo – just like I do my normal fries… I don’t see anything weird about it! πŸ™‚

Isn’t it weird how sweet potato fries are a MUST order! I would never get an order of regular fries, but always go for the sp variety. Anyway, I like mine plain or with ketchup or BBQ sauce. YUM YUM. I want to try guacamole or hummus like VeggieGirl, though!

It’s so nice your core group of girls is close by! Have a super Sunday. πŸ™‚

first of all–congrats on your race, that is so impressive and definitely something to be proud of!

you and your friends look so cute! you’re really lucky that you have such a great group that live in the same area–that definitely makes the stressful times a little easier.

mmmmm sweet potato fries are pretty much my FAVORITE thing on earth. yummm. I usually eat them plain but sometimes will dip them in ketchup (especially if I make them myself and “fried” actually = baked in the oven.) I love ketchup on pretty much everything though! Sometimes I get funny looks when I put it on my eggs…or mac & cheese!

I love it when places have unique beers on tap. Most places just have all the usuals. Yuck!

I’m with you on ketchup with sweet potato fries, it’s so good. I actaully don’t like sweet potatoes with cinnamon and sugar, maybe it’s because everytime I’ve had it, it’s been sickenly sweet.

I just started reading your blog this week, and I enjoy it a lot!
