FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some questions I see regularly on my blog. If you have any other questions please feel free to e-mail me at graduatemeghann@gmail.com.
Do you count calories?
No, I do not count calories. When I first started to lose weight a friend of mine told me to try counting calories after I had already lost 10 or so pounds. I counted for about a week and absolutely hated it. I ended up scrutinizing all the food I ate and I would end up feeling bad when I did not come in way below my calorie goal. While I counted calories I pretty much starved my body and did not lose any weight. When I realized the calorie counting did not make a difference I went back to what I was doing before and the weight melted off. There are plenty of people who had success counting calories and losing weight, I was just not one of them.
How did you lose the weight and what are you doing differently now?
I am not doing one thing different now, then when I was trying to lose weight. I simply stopped eating fast food, I stopped cooking with heavy sauces, started exercising and started to learn about this whole other realm of good for you food out there. The changes I made to my lifestyle were enjoyable ones and I felt no reason to change any of them just because I had reached my goal. I decided to keep up with my habits and see when my weight naturally landed. When I hit around 124 the needle stopped moving and I decided this is the weight I should be at.
You never use milk in your cereal combinations, are you lactose intolerant?
I am not lactose intolerant; I am just not a fan of milk. I do not even chocolate milk. Every time I picture myself drinking it I picture it curdling in my stomach… not very appetizing. L I try to get dairy into my life in other forms, but its spread out few and far between, which is why I try to take a daily calcium supplement to make up for it.
How do you measure your running distances and do you use a heart rate monitor?
I recently received the Garmin Forerunner 305 for Christmas and am in love! It is a GPS enabled Heart Rate Monitor which measures my heart rate, distance and pace.
Hey Meghann…did you ever write a post about what you did to start running? I was just curious if you used any specific method to start running. Thanks!
Last January I just decided I was going to start running, so I laced up my beat up tennis shoes and went out the door. When I started running I did not even know running plans existed, I was just running as a way to lose weight. I started out running about a mile at a time and then gradually built on from there. I ran my first 5k at the end of February, with a not so great time, but I was very proud. I decided to run a Half marathon in July and really started to pick up my running game from there. I still had no set plan, I just gradually added to my weekly mileage leading up to the race. I am a big believer in approaching running at a slow and steady climb. It took me almost a year to be able to run 13.1 miles at a time, but I got there and could not be happier.
You rarely document what you drink, how do you stay hydrated during the day?
Trust me I stay very hydrated throughout the day, I only tend to document any drink that has calories in it. I usually survive off of daily fixes of water, hot herbal tea, unsweetened iced tea (which I buy Publix’s brand by the gallon!), sparkling water, and flavored seltzer water. I have eased myself away from adding any sweetener or milk to my tea and now prefer it black. I am a recovering soda addict and miss the bubbles so I have either one sparkling water or seltzer a day. Right now I am in love with Raspberry La Croix Sparkling Waters, which you may have seen popping up in a few pictures in my blog. Just remember when buying flavored water to make sure nothing artificial is added. The La Croix has 0 calories and 0 artificial sweeteners.

I don’t like milk either
I know you have mentioned using various workout DVDs that you got through NetFlix .. I would love to get a few dvds for xmas to have for those rainy days. Would you mind sharing a few of your favorites?
Hi Amanda – You actually gave me an idea to do a review section of the DVDs I have done while on the blog. For now I will let you know I am a HUGE fan of all of the Billy Blanks DVD. If you’re looking for a great challenge try his Boot Camp series. I also like all of the Biggest Loser DVDs and the Jillian Micheals Set. The Jillian DVDs are short (30 minutes) but are very intense and great if you’re crunched on time. I also have been enjoying the Kathy Smith DVDs. I would stay away from any Crunch DVD or Firm, they are relatively easy and boring. I hope this helps.
I love the fact that you run and that you have a Q about it on your FAQ. I would like to get a garmin. I have a polar with foot pod. It has worked well for me, although when I did a 50 miler I think maybe the garmin would have worked better since the foot pod has a lot of variance with different terrains.

Hi Meghann
I have fallen in love with your site. I’m a runner and in desperate need of a healthy eating plan overhaul and finding your site so helpful.
I do have a question though. How much do you spend on groceries in a week?
Goldie
Goldie – I spent an average of $50 a week on groceries. That usually included 3 meals a day for 6 days of the week for just me.
Do you have any tips for improving running speeds? Also do you really push yourself in your daily running workouts, for example how hard are you running on a scale of 1-10?
Thanks!
I am a gym junkie but running scares me so bad! It is VERY intimidating to me
Great information!!
Hi Meghann,
I’ve been following your blog and I’m really inspired by your determination and passion for running. Well, I recently signed up for a half marathon and was wondering if you have any training programes to recommend me. Any ones that u have tried and felt that it has really helped u?
Thanks!!
Felicia
I love these FAQs!! Do you take any other vitamins?
Very inspirational! I’m exactly the height and weight that you were at when you started to lose weight. I am going to try to follow and keep up with your progress in past posts and I lose weight! I’m aiming for 15 pounds.
Hey there! I absolutely love your blog and i totally agree with you as far as calorie counting. However, i was wondering if you ever plan your meals ahead of time or if you just play it by ear and make the best decisions with whats available to you. Keep up the good work!
Meghann,
I found out about your blog in Self magazine and I’ve already made it to the gym and purchased some healthy new foods thanks to you!
Who are you on Twitter? I’d love to follow you there!
Congrats on making it big in the blogosphere! I’d love for you to guest post or do an interview for my blog, http://www.mscareergirl.com, too!

Hi Meghann!!
I’ve never actually commented but I read your blog everday (I hope this doesn’t sound too creepy). Anyways, I’ve been inspired by the blog world and I’ve completely changed my eating habits when trying to adopt a healthier lifestyle. I never would have tried almond butter, larabars, or cooking if it hadn’t been for your blog and others that I read. I’m a senior at Duke and headed to the “corporate” life next year and I know that I will need a creative outlet to keep myself sane. So… I’m thinking of joining the movement and starting a heath/food/fitness blog (I teach spinning at school!). I’m sure you get this question all the time, but what is the easiest way to start? Get an account on wordpress and start commenting so that I gain a few readers? I know you are super busy (with the coolest job ever) but I’d really appreciate any advice you have. Also, I know there are some downsides to blogging… I’d also love to hear if the pros outweigh the cons. Happy Holidays!!!
Jamie
I’ve been such a big fan of your blog for a long time but only recently got a wp account, so this is my first time commenting. I’m also a recovering soda addict! I’ve mostly cut it out already, and am giving this one up to God for Lent
Thanks for all your hard work–keep up the amazing blogging!
Meghann, I used to run and I am picking it up again. I have been running in a group with track shack and I have committed to running a 1/2 marathon on 4/24. I am stepping up my runs and I am on a plan but I really want to get a Garmin watch. I was wondering if I can get by with the older version, the 101. They are cheaper and I don’t need the HR monitor or anything, I just want to know how far I have gone and I want it to work in Orlando’s downtown area with buildings. Do any of your friends have the 101? Thanks
What camera do you use to take all of these wonderful photos if you don’t mind me asking? Thanks in advance!
Hi Meghann!
I found your blog through ShePosts–on a list that included some Orlando area bloggers. I’m from the Orlando area, too! I’m a group fitness instructor (among other things). It’s nice to “see” someone else from my area

Hope to talk to you soon!
Do you quote your running pace stats in mins/mile or some other unit? e.g. metric or statue).
Thanks!
You seem to make such delicious concoctions. What staples do you have in your pantry for them? What is your grocery list like/ how many times a week do you go? Do you plan your meals in advance or do you just throw them together?
