Marathon Recovery

by Meghann on January 22, 2017

The Walt Disney World Marathon was officially two weeks ago today. How do I feel? Great!

I took the first full week after the marathon completely off from any training or exercise (minus walking the dog). It was great. I was a little sore for the first couple of days after the race (especially when it came to going from a sitting position to a standing one), but the soreness seemed to fade away quickly. Really, I just enjoyed having the ability to “sleep in” for the week (I use that term loosely since “sleeping in” was still 6:00 am during the week).

Derek gave me a “day at the spa” for Christmas this year, which I saved and cashed in the Saturday after my marathon.  Man, that was amazing. My package included a massage, facial, and pedicure – exactly what my post-marathon training body was craving. I really hope this eventually turns into one of those married people traditions where “dad” gives “mom” the same gift year after year. I would totally be okay with getting a day at the spa every Christmas. I wouldn’t complain one bit.

One of my big goals for 2017 will be building my speed back up, so I returned to running a week after my marathon with some speed work. Instead of making excuses on not being able to make it to a track, I decided to bring the track to me. Turns out a loop around my block is exactly .3 miles. Not exactly the same as .25 of a track, but it’s definitely something. I ran a few laps last Tuesday and Thursday jogging the turns and sprinting the straightaways. Man, that felt good. I also did some yoga videos through Amazon Prime that left me more sore than I care to admit. Another 2017 goal – more yoga!

So what’s next?

I’m registered for the Gasparilla Half Marathon next month. I’ve sat out the last couple of years due to pregnancy and having a baby, so I’m excited to re-join a race that has been such a huge part of my running past. The race is a Tampa institution and they do a great job putting on an awesome race.

Since it’s such a fast turn around I really have no plans for the race, except to get out there and have fun. After that, working on speed will become my top priority. I’m ready for the challenge!

A spa day for Christmas every year would set me up for a great year! My hubby and I had decided to go together for a spa day as our gifts to each other, but we’ve since decided to save the money and we’re putting it towards a Disney trip in May!

Great to hear that you’re recovering so fast and you’re heading to the next race. I’m also training for a half marathon with SportMe running app, which calculates distance, pace, time and calories and adjusts running plans to my progress.

Wow. No comments. I know you’re not the only young female blogger to neglect to mention the women’s march, but I can’t help but say this is why you do not have comments. It is tasteless to me to ignore such a historic effort of strong women across the globe coming together for a cause… silence in our society = complicitness. Doesn’t matter who you voted for, women should stand with other women.

Gasparilla is on my running bucket list. When my husband was living in Tampa we kept saying we were going to register and just never did. Now it will be a good excuse to visit again. Plus Tampa has the best food. 🙂

I’ll be running the half at Gasparilla as well! We were new to FL last year, and my husband and I ran the 15k. I was super impressed at what a fun, well-organized race weekend Gasparilla was!

Oh gosh–another half marathon already? You go!

Would you ever try an ultra marathon? They say if you can run a marathon, you’re not that far off from being able to run an ultra.
