Going Green With Youfit

Remember a few months ago when I made a list of reachable goals?

  1. Join a gym
  2. Take a yoga class
  3. Swim

Somewhere between surviving the first trimester and a really intense work schedule (I can’t tell you how happy I am that our largest event of the year is now behind us!), I really dropped the ball on following up with those goals. Luckily, thanks to Fitfluential, I was recently able to make two of those goals a reality.

Say hello to my new gym, Youfit.

I must have driven by my local Youfit over a thousand times before I finally stepped in for the first time a month ago. I’ve always been curious about the “green” gym with the bright logo and colorful interior, but the low membership rates honestly made me a little nervous. It was sort of one of those instances where I thought the deal must be too good to be true. With membership fees starting at $10 for a standard membership and only going to $19.99 for the top tier (which includes unlimited access to other locations, as well as unlimited guest passes), there had to be a catch, right? Old equipment? Crazy contracts?  Something!

My spring intern was actually the first person I heard rave about Youfit. I had mentioned months ago that I was looking for a gym and she had nothing but great things to say about it. Low fees. New equipment. No contracts. Unlimited guest passes (which essentially creates a two-for-one deal). She could really go on and on. She was a former collegiate athlete who loved to run and lift weights – for her, Youfit was a winner.

So I went thought the paperwork process, got my new member tour, and started putting my lime card to the test.

By the way, Youfit’s lime card comes with additional local perks. I’ve recently been flashing it at a select group of local restaurants/ smoothie shops for various discounts. Score.

During my tour I learned a bit of background about Youfit. Youfit Health Club was founded in 2008 by Rick Berks with the philosophy that fitness clubs should be welcoming, not intimidating. Seven years later, the company is opening its 100thlocation in North Providence, Rhode Island. (A full list of locations can be found here)

Why is everything so “green”? Well, it’s more than a nod to the fun, bright color. Youfit strives to be the “greenest” gym in America by being dedicated to using recycled materials in its clubs. Floors are made of recycled tires or Nike “grind” (recycled sneakers). Heating, cooling, water and power systems are all energy-efficient.

Youfit’s personal trainers are referred to as “YouCoaches” and actually start at fairly reasonable rates. They come with all the fancy certifications and can walk you through the equipment or design specific training plans to reach your goals and needs.

Select locations of Youfit offers group personal training classes like YouGX, Zumba, Yoga, Turbo Kick, etc. I’ve been taking a weekly yoga class, which has been really great. It’s a flow class that concentrates on stretching and is aimed towards beginners. I love it, because that’s exactly what I need right now.

The cardio equipment is also all brand-new with built-in television monitors and USB ports that allow you to charge your phone or iPod while running.

The gym membership really could not have come at a better time because if there’s one thing every pregnant runner needs it’s a bathroom nearby! Thank you, YouFit, for placing the treadmills right in front of the restrooms! It’s really convenient when that got-to-go-NOW moment strikes out of nowhere.

I’ve been going at various times of the day and find it interesting the different gym demographics, depending on what time you’re there. For instance – the gym is most crowded after work with the young professionals taking over every piece of equipment in sight, the mornings are a little quieter with a little older of a crowd, and weekend mornings consist of a quiet mix of both.

Overall I’ve been really impressed with Youfit. The equipment is great, the gym is clean, and they have pretty much everything I need (minus spin classes and a pool – I mean, if I really wanted to be picky). And really for the price, that’s hard to beat.

Be sure to follow Youfit on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook for inspiration, healthy recipes and workout tips. You can also following Youfit’s blog – Youniverse.

No pool would be a deal breaker for me. If it didn’t have a gym I’d have to pay to use a gym elsewhere.

I know you asked about gyms but I don’t belong to one. I’m adamant about staying in shape without paying for a gym. I just wanted to say how lovely your bump is 🙂 you rock it well. 🙂 xx

This sounds like exactly the kind of place I would’ve worked out at a decade ago (I’m 38). But now, as a stay-at-home mom with 3 kids, if a gym doesn’t have childcare, it’s a no-go for me.

I had a YouFit membership a while back when I didn’t have any access to a gym (now I just use the one at our clubhouse). I LOVED it and kinda miss it! I usually don’t like the typical gym environment, but I always felt pretty comfortable there. I happened to love the bright colors- it woke me up!! The one I went to didn’t have classes, but that’s awesome that some of the clubs are adding them! Glad you found a yoga class you like 🙂
