The secret’s out! I’m an event coordinator at Iron Girl!
For those of you who guessed that I work at Ironman, you’re sort of right too. I actually work for World Triathlon Corporation which is made up of the Ironman, Iron Girl, and Iron Kids sub-brands. Iron Girl is a completely separate department from Ironman, so even though I work alongside Ironman, I don’t technically work with any of their races. Does that make sense?
And in case you’ve never heard of Iron Girl, it’s a women’s only race series with events all over the U.S. We’re mainly triathlons, but we have a few road races too. Our first event of 2013 is the Athleta Iron Girl Half Marathon taking place NEXT Sunday in Clearwater.
I actually ran the half marathon in 2011 and loved it.
This time I get to be on the other side of the race scene and i couldn’t be more excited!
So that’s my job. I’ll be traveling to various races all through the summer, while also trying to balance my own Ironman training. Luckily I work for a pretty awesome company that sort of encourages this type of thing.
Where else can you enjoy a lunchtime open water swim with a handful of co-workers?
Not going to lie, I was giddy as a school girl when I got the initial email the other day inviting me to be a part of the swim. I even pulled my wetsuit out of the cobwebs for the occasion. Can you believe I haven’t worn that thing since I did Augusta 70.3 in 2011?! Clearly I live in Central Florida where wetsuit legal triathlons are rare.
Admittedly I probably could have done without the wetsuit. The water felt great and I was just a tad warm in the wetsuit. However, it was nice to have that extra buoyancy. I forgot how much of a difference that buoyancy makes!
We only did a short swim, about 1300 yards total according to a co-worker’s Garmin 910 (totally jealous of her Garmin by the way). It still felt good just to get out there. I hadn’t swam in the open water since Miami 70.3 last October.
I’ve heard lunchtime swims/ runs become a regular thing over the summer. There was even talk of a training board going up in the break room to get some sort of schedule worked out. All things I can definitely get on board with. Even though the swims aren’t long, I need the open water practice for sighting and just getting out of the pool.
The swims take place across the street from the office and there’s access to showers. I brought shampoo, conditioner, and soap to wash off with afterwards and my co-worker gave a good tip on wearing a dress on swim days to keep it easy.
Good excuse to wear my new Loft dress.
I returned to the office and felt so energized and pumped for the rest of the afternoon. Who needs coffee when you have an open water swim to work as a pick me up?
Speaking of coffee – yep, totally changing subjects here – I had an early morning coffee date with a few girlfriends yesterday morning that totally started my day on the right foot.
I said good-bye to my still sleeping husband (to let him know I fed the dog) before I left and 10 minutes later I got a confused phone call asking why I left so early. I guess leaving for work an hour early is a bit odd. 😉
I love our monthly morning coffee dates. A great excuse to relax and chat a little before the craziness of the day takes over. Plus, it’s a good excuse to visit Jet City for their Cafe Borgia. We’ve thrown out meeting at other places, but why mess with a good thing?
Have a great Thursday, friends!
