Me No Likey

Burpees, I think I hate you.

20121214_080037.jpg

I know, hate is such a strong word. Let’s just say I extremely dislike them, especially during weeks (like this week) that are so burpee heavy. Here’s hoping next week isn’t so burpee crazy (ha!).

Before the burpees, were the Hang Power Snatches. Something new I learned: “power” lifts are where you do not catch the bar in a full squat position. That means “power” moves are usually harder and require lower weight. A Hang Power Snatch is where you start your lift from the knee height, then catch the bar high and not in a full squat. For someone who usually struggles getting into a deep squat for any lifting move, I was now struggling not going into a full squat, go figure.

I kept my weight light for the Hang Power Snatches and maxed out at 40lbs for my three sets of three.

Enter: Burpee fun.

Our Friday WOD:

  • 20 m bear crawl
  • 3 dead lifts
  • 10 lateral burpees over bar
  • 5 RFT (rounds for time)

The bear crawl was harder than I was expecting. We had to get down on all fours with straight arms and legs then crawl from one cone to another and back. I couldn’t figure out how to do this with any sort of speed. How does one crawl fast on all fours?! Our coach warned us ahead of time that the first two of the bear crawl would feel good, then by the third round we would be cursing it. Since the bear crawl followed the burpees, I was happy to switch from one to the other. Out of the two, I’d say the bear crawl was the lesser of two evils.

The dead lifts followed the bear crawls. My hands were so beat up from doing the bear crawls on the parking lot asphalt, that they almost burned when I grabbed the bar. Ouch. In other news, I broke 100 for the dead lift for the first time – score!

And then there were the burpees. Ugh. “Lateral burpees” meant we had to jump over our bar between each burpee. So we would do a burpee, jump to the left over the bar, go down down for another, come up, jump over the bar to the right, get down for another, etc. etc. We did that 10 times before returning to the bear crawls. I started cursing the burpees during round 1.

We repeated the WOD 5 times, then called time. I called at 8:31.

(p.s. Jole KILLED it! She’s my daily CrossFit inspiration!)

Awesome WOD today! (minus the burpees πŸ˜‰ )

I like reading about your WODs. Today’s sounds like a great one to me actually – maybe because I understood it all. If you asked me before yesterday, I would have said my least favorite exercise is snow angel planks on sliding discs. But after having to row 2,000 meters at CrossFit yesterday (which was brutal enough before I showered and realized the pain that comes with missing skin on my butt – I still can’t wear jeans or even roll over in bed) I can safely say that the rowing machine is my least favorite exercise.

Just wait until you have a sit-up heavy day. Then you’ll realize why everyone goes for the ab-mats on those. I had to wear boy short panties for a week because the chafing hurt so bad.

Burpees are definitely my least favorite!!! In any form!

Thanks goodness for no burpees in our WOD this morning! We were introduced to the prowler sled for our skill/strength today- my 8 mile run tomorrow should be interesting after that quad burner…

I hate burpees. We did just lateral jumps in todays WOD and I’m not the biggest fan of those. Burpees, thrusters, and wall balls all count as my least favorite. ha. Way to go on breaking 100!!! It feels good doesn’t it?

I am loving your CF posts because I’m a CrossFitter myself! I HATE burpees, but discovered something I hated MORE than burpees today as part of our WOD: Grasshoppers. Have you had those yet? It’s like a mountain climber, but you get your ankle to touch the wrist of your opposite hand. Miserable. So that’s my latest worst move ever!

Great job on the WOD — burpee bar jumps suck.

Were you taught that RFT was “repeat for time”? I was always taught it was “Rounds for time”.. just curious..

Lateral burpee bar jumps aren’t as bad as burpees ON the bar. My arms shake so bad doing those~!

It is rounds for time. For some reason I always remember it as repeat for time… bad habit!

I fully agree – hate burpees. Not a fan of those jumping lunges either!

I think I would literally die if I tried Cross Fit. Is there like a starter level? Is that a stupid question?

They have “fundamental” classes to introduce people to the CrossFit language. The WODs can be tailored to all skill levels with different weights and variations of each move.

I have to say that I hate kettlebell snatches. I hate when I’m swinging out of the snatch and my hand is sweaty and I’m scared I might lose grip and send the kettlebell flying. And I don’t know if I just have a weak grip on my left hand but I always pinch skin there and it is slightly painful.

I like burpees but I dislike them too πŸ˜‰ They work–but they are killer. They’re designed that way. Hah. I also don’t love mtn climbers.

Yup, burpees are DEFINITELY my most hated workout…which is exactly why I actually created a December Challenge on my blog for myself to work on my burpees! Still hating them, but maybe if I get better at them, they’ll stink less πŸ˜›

My least favorite workout move is anything that involves jumping up. My knees don’t like that at all. I don’t have any problems running though. πŸ™‚
