Wedding: Our First Casualty

by Meghann on October 24, 2012

We had our first wedding casualty yesterday.

Fido broke into our “wedding stuff” stash at my parents’ house and decided our cake topper would make a good new toy. *sniff* The cake topper never saw it coming. RIP topper!

Fido’s lucky he’s cute.

How could you get mad at this face?

Luckily we still have a little more than two months until the wedding, plenty of time to order a replacement topper. I’ve already contacted the Etsy shop we ordered the first one from and have started the process of getting another one. I know this is just the first item on a long list of things are sure to go wrong before the wedding. I’m fine with that.

And if that’s the only casualty of the wedding, I’ll be one happy bride. A girl can dream, right? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Did you have any “wedding casualties” leading up to you big day? Stained dress, broken shoe, chewed up cake topper? Share below!

When I got to the venue on my wedding day, one of our custom made champagne flutes has broken when the box was accidentally dropped. My day of coordinator found this out before I did, and scrambled to find a replacement. Luckily, one of Marcus’ groomsmen had given us a set of Tiffany champagne flutes for our wedding, so he saved the day and just gave them to me to open before the wedding. That was our only snafu!

Oh I have the best story that my mom loves to tell. My mom’s best friend comes from a rather wealthy family and her mother wanted everything to be perfect for her big wedding. Well, a couple hours before the ceremony somehow the cake toppled over as they were setting it up at the reception! Luckily when the caterer called they got a hold of the bride’s father who told them “I don’t care what it costs, fix it.” The bride and her mom didn’t find out until after the wedding! He was a smart man to not let them know, it would have been chaos!

oh… just parents who refused to show up and watch their only daughter get married! A cake topper is nothing.

Oh no! Sounds like what happened to me.

3 days before we were supposed to fly to Mexico for our wedding, I woke up to find that my dog ate about 10 of the place cards for the wedding. The rest were sprawled out on the floor. I started bawling! It was a Sunday morning, so I started freaking out about getting knew ones shipped. Luckily my invitation creator extrodinaire (from Etsy) printed them out and shipped them overnight on Monday. $40 i didn’t want to spend, but at least I had my placecards. I literally got them 24 hours before our flight.

I think I have the WORST Wedding Casualty. When I took my wedding dress to get altered, the tailor pricked his finger while pinning the back of my gown and got bright red blood spots all over the back of the dress. Cue tears, panicking, and a little bit of yelling. Ahhh! My dress was purchased from Priscilla of Boston on the day they announced they were closing so there was no way to order a new gown.

Thankfully it all worked out: I was introduced to the nicest (and greatest!) dry cleaner ever who managed to clean my dress (for free) and make it look better than brand new. He later offered to deliver the dress to my wedding venue and steam it just before the Big Day. Post-wedding, he cleaned my dress and preserved it in a keepsake box. I owe everything to this guy!

The adult version of “my dog ate my homework” … ?
At least you have enough time to replace it! Thankfully it’s one of those things you’ll be able to laugh about in the future. ๐Ÿ™‚

I actually didn’t have anything go seriously wrong before or during the wedding. At least if it did, I can’t remember which bodes well, right?

I married in my hometown – VERY small; no local florist, a single quick trip type store, a tiny grocery store and that’s about it!

My hubby and I did our pictures the day before at a gorgeous mansion/plantation type place; then the day of the wedding all we had left to do were pix with the family, attendants, etc., and we did those all before the wedding started. We then took a break; had some lunch and the ceremony started at 2 p.m.

I had used a florist about 10-12 minutes away from where we married. I had 3 candelabras across the stage; so about 5-10 minutes before the service, our candle lighters moved forward to light all the candelabras…except NONE would light! Turns out the type of candle they used could only be lit ONE TIME, that’s it.

Our florist had to drive to their store to obtain replacement candles:
1 – so glad they had plenty in stock
2 – can’t believe they didn’t know this before
3 – and the funniest part? People were PETRIFIED to tell me thinking I would come uncorked.

I didn’t; just said meh – whatever; it was the happiest day of my life; starting a few minutes late was nothing in the scheme of a lifetime together!!

Aw, that’s too bad! At least you have enough time to get a new one!

The night before my wedding, I pulled my dress out of the bag and there was a huge pull through the front. I freaked out! My sister was there and told me to leave the room.. somehow she fixed it and there was only small evidence that anything was wrong. No one would notice unless they knew and looked very, very closely.

Good luck with the rest!

A few weeks after we got our dog, she chewed up this flower girl basket that I had used when I was a flower girl for my aunt back in 1983. I’d had that thing for 25 years! ๐Ÿ™ Oh well. At least I didn’t have any flower girls in my wedding that would need to use it anyway.

Oh wow! I would’ve died.

Our speciality napkins ended up in TEXAS 2 days before our wedding (in STL)! I was dyyyyyiiinnngg! They were real special (and $$), and I was mad. Luckily they expedited it, and didn’t charge that extra fee. But still. MAJORLY not happy.

I was the flower girl at my aunty’s wedding at the age of 4 and was given the task of holding the pillow with the rings on it. In the car on the way there, one of them fell off in the car – cue MASSIVE panic when we got to the church, I was too little to understand. I still get paid out 22 years later!

Someone lost one of our toasting flutes, my wedding photographer went AWOL so we never got our pictures except on a DVD that can’t be unlocked, my friend borrowed the broach I wore in my hair for her wedding day and then lost it, and my wedding planner stepped on my veil and nearly tore it in half. But I have a happy marriage, so that’s what counts!

Oh no! Glad you have plenty of time to order a replacement. On the day of my wedding, we shot some photos with the wedding party before the ceremony. We sort of ran across a field holding hands and one of the groomsmen stepped on my dress and ripped it! Needless to say, the ceremony was a bit delayed as family members were rushing to my side to stitch me up. It just makes for one more memorable moment. ๐Ÿ™‚

My dog actually at my cake topper too. I was SO PISSED because it took me about 5 hours to make the stupid thing. I think I cried for 20 minutes and then made my fiance(now husband) take me to get Taco Bell(comfort food).
My cat also chewed up the shoes I was thinking about wearing but I wasn’t mad about that because I didn’t really like them that much.

21 Theresa October 26, 2012 at 5:11 pm

I bought beautiful new Tom’s in light blue to be my ‘something blue’ for the wedding…a few weeks before I came downstairs to see my little rescued pit bull, on her back, with the shoe in her mouth, rolling around so happily oblivious to her new $50 chew toy… I ended up wearing them anyway! A little bit of dog rescuer humor for our big day:)

I’ve never been married, but I used to make wedding cakes. I was almost the cause of a wedding casualty when the top tier of a cake I was delivering toppled over in the car. Fortunately, after fishing it out of its box when I arrived at the reception location, I was able to work some magic with some back-up frosting. Catastrophe averted, whewww!

Yes, my actual dress itself. Although it was actually after the wedding, thank god. I had it in the bag and since it was pretty big to fit in the closet, I had temporary laid it on the floor of the office. This was apparently my husband’s coonhound’s favorite afternoon spot to nap. He dug through the bag into the dress and made himself comfortable on his new “pillow”.
