Wedding: Wanted: Song ideas!

by Meghann on September 27, 2012

Derek and I have a song selected for our first dance, as well as one for the the mother/son dance (Derek’s unsure, but I think he should stick with his first choice. 😉 ).

However, we’re still missing a few others:

  • Bridal party processional
  • Bridal processional
  • Bridal party entrance
  • Bride and Groom entrance (scratch that – I forgot we picked something out for this too!)
  • Father/daughter dance

Any ideas what we should choose?

Also, what are your favorite songs that bring you out on the dance floor at a wedding? We’ve been told to come up with a list of our favorites, but we’re not sure where to start!

For father/daughter I’ve always loved God Only Knows by the Beach Boys or Lullaby by Billy Joel. Good luck!

What kind of music are you into? Here were our songs:
Bridal party processional – I Could Not Ask for More – Sara Evans .. I remember hearing this while I was waiting to walk down, and now every time I hear it, I get goosebumps!!

Bridal processional – Lost in this Moment – Big & Rich (my husband chose it). I don’t get goosebumps from this because I barely remember hearing it!

Bridal party entrance – The guys walked in to Ain’t Goin Down Til’ the Sun Comes Up – Garth Brookes, and the girls to Shake it for Me – Luke Bryan. I wanted Hall and Oate’s You Make My Dreams Come True but no dice, lol.

License signing song – Baby, I Know It – Johnny Reid and Carolyn Dawn Johnson.

Father/daughter dance – You’re My Hero by Theresa James
(listen to this song, it is amazing. Try youtube, it’s hard to find! I had to buy the .mp3 from a website; it wasn’t even on iTunes. I instantly knew I wanted it, and it isn’t an overdone cliche song, either).

Obviously we had a bit of a country theme lol, not sure what you’re into! Good luck! I spent a ridiculously embarrassing amount of time trying to select music for everything.

We went really traditional for the ceremony music:
Canon in D (Bridal Party Processional)
Here Comes the Brides (Bride)
Wedding March (Recessional)

For the wedding party entrance we did “The Final Countdown” by Europe (but we are big Arrested Development fans) and for the bride/father dance we did “I Loved Her First”, which a lot of weddings do, but my dad said it made him think of me, so we did it. 🙂

I think a good mix of old and new songs is good. A few new pop-songs later in the evening is great for the younger crowd, but it’s always fun to play oldies that everyone there would know.

My father daughter dance song is My Little Girl by Tim McGraw! For our bridal party entrance we are most likely playing Friends in Low Places by Garth Brooks – mostly because it’s funny! We also considered the Friends theme song as well!

We did My Little Girl for my dance with my dad as well. I honestly do not remember what my bridal party walked down to, but my processional was Beautiful by Faith Hill, only we had it cut to only include the chorus.

Our intro songs were all different, and I let the DJ pick. Recently I was a MOH in a wedding and we walked in to “Sexy and I know it” LOL.

Procesional: Your hand in Mine done by the Vitamin STring Quartet.

Bohemian Rhapsody seems to get everyone up in my group, as does the locomotion and macarena. Bonus: if your dress is good for spinning in, the macarena really makes your skirt go “swoosh”

Are the processional songs going to be recordings or live music? I chose some favorites and had a keyboardist, which was really a fun take (kind of like those Vitamin Orchestra arrangements).

I had instrumentals from Anastasia, (“At the Beginning”) The Princess Bride (“Storybook Love”) and the music from “O” – Cirque du Soleil.

I’m getting married one month from today 🙂 and here are our picks:

First dance: I Wanna Grow Old With You (from the Wedding Singer. We had a choreographer choreograph it for us!)

Bride processional: Christmas Canon by Trans-Siberian Orchestra (gorgeous!)

Recessional: Instrumental Bittersweet Symphony

Bridal Party Processional: still a big question mark!

I have been planning weddings for a few years now, and I would also recommend that you create a ‘do not play’ list 🙂 To me, this is more important than a ‘must play’ list because it ensures you don’t listen to songs you hate all night, and that the DJ doesn’t play a song that a tipsy guest requests 😉

Also, since you’re having a country wedding, I vote for “It’s Your Love” by Tim McGraw & Faith Hill for a portion of the evening 🙂

I was married a couple weeks ago and people are still talking about our song choices. They were a hit!

We used a string trio for the ceremony and they arranged the following pieces. They were just as beautiful (and fun!) in string form as in regular song form:

Moms and groomsmen processional – Hallelujah
Bridesmaids processional – Seasons of Love (Rent)
Bridal processional – standard Here Comes the Bride
Recessional – Never Gonna Give You Up (Rick Astley) Yupp, we went there and it was awesome.

These were played by the DJ:
Bridal party entrance – I Believe in a Thing Called Love (The Darkness)
Father/daughter dance – What a Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong)

Shout and Call Me Maybe were the big ones that got the dance floor really moving.

This was one of the first things I thought about (I love music), so I’m just going to list what I’m using in hopes you’ll find something you will like:

Bridal party processional — Ho Hey by The Lumineers
Bridal processional — Going to the Chapel of Love — The Dixie Cups
Bridal party entrance — (this one I actually haven’t decided because I want the bridal party to choose it, and I haven’t asked them yet)
Father/daughter dance — Landslide by Fleetwood Mac

We went the traditional route at our ceremony:
Mother’s/Bridal Party- Jesu Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring
Bride – Canon in D
Bridal Recessional – Wedding March

I don’t remember the music played at our reception. We had a 3-piece jazz group (guitar, drums, sax) play and they pretty much had “free reign” as we didn’t do dances, etc.

For our wedding we asked guest to pick a favourite song when they RSVP-ed so we added these to the list, as well as our personal favourites and a lot of top 40. The best dance tip that we got was that everyone wants to be with the bride and groom, i.e. if you want people to dance you better be out there!

I’m happy to send you our list of wedding songs, if you’d like?

I used this as a processional for my bridesmaids: “Watership Down” from The Princess Bride, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTtcvQKWqRc
(Start about 1:10 in, you’ll recognize it!)

Bridal Processional: Canon in D, “Air” from Ochestral Suite No. 3 , Prelude in C Major by Bach, Winter from the Four Seasons by Vivaldi, or Trumpet Voluntary by Jeremiah Clarke

Bridal Party Entrance: Why not the FSU fight song?!

Father / Daughter Dance: I asked my dad to choose and he chose, “The Dance” by Garth Brooks No matter what you dance to, you’ll burst into tears whenever you hear it!
Others:
‘I Loved Her First’ by Heartland
‘Father and Daughter’ Paul Simon
‘My Little Girl’ Tim McGraw
And, oddly enough, I blogged about this song yesterday, “The Best Day” Taylor Swift

I just got married last month so I love reading your blog and seeing you go through the fun (and stressful!) process!

We got married in a church so our processionals and recessionals were traditional organ music.

For our bridal party entrance we played “Sirius” by the Alan Parsons Project. It is the Chicago Bulls entrance song and we had our DJ introduce the bridal party like you would introduce a starting line up at a basketball game.

My dad and I danced to “Daughter” by Loudon Wainwright.

Our biggest dance floor songs were Call Me Maybe, The Wobble and Copperhead Road.

My bridal processional was Ave Maria (after J.S. Bach) on piano and cello http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gje8BoJQnOU – so beautiful. I grew up playing in a youth symphony orchestra, and it was important to me to go a traditional classical route without the typical wedding march.

I also love this – from the movie Once – falling slowly: listen to it all the way through, very emotional! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8bXKE-V2Qc

The music in our wedding/reception were such big deals to me! Here’s what I can remember we used three years ago:

Processional: Wedding March from Midsummer Night’s Dream (Mendelsshon)
Recessional: All You Need Is Love
Father/Daughter Dance: Try (Try to Fall in Love), chosen by my dad
First Dance: You are the Best Thing-Ray Lamontagne
Bridal Party Entrance: Minnesota Wild Theme
Bride and Groom Entrance: Accidentally in Love-Counting Crows

I think one of the most important things is having the first song that everyone dances to being a crowd pleaser! Our DJ played “I Gotta Feeling” and the dance floor was PACKED. We also selected the last song of the night to be “Don’t Stop Believin'” and that was a hit too. Our DJ did a great job of keeping the danceable tunes playing!

Bridal Party Processional: I think it was “Air”- it was just a standard instrumental
Bridal Processional: The instrumental of “You’re Beautiful” by James Blunt
Bridal Recessional: The Peanuts theme
Bridal Party Entrance: I don’t remember! Ours was Short Skirt Long Jacket by Cake, though.
Father/Daughter- What a Wonderful World

We used:
Bridal Party Processional – Tom Petty “Wildflowers
Bride Processional – Theme Song from Princess Bride
(both of those were played acoustic guitar)

Did not do entrance songs

I told my dad to pick our song so he got to be a part of it – and it was one less thing I had to figure out! He picked “May You Always” but The Maguire Sisters

I also just got invited to a wedding where on the wedding website they asked for music recs. They had a drop down type box you could type in. Might work for you guys!

Party songs – Like a Prayer, Call Me Maybe, Don’t Stop Believing

We also played Rocky Top at ours as an hommage to my husband’s Tennessee roots. It got all of my cousins up and (square) dancing. Not sure if they all understood where the song was from, but it was a blast!

Groom and boys come in: Handle with Care – Traveling Wilburys
Bridesmaids – With a Little Help From My Friends – Joe Cocker

First Dance: Lost Together – Blue Rodeo
Parents Dance: Your Song – Elton John

For our wedding this summer we used:
Bridal party processional: Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring (instrumental)
Bridal processional: Canon in D
Bridal party entrance: Say Hey (I Love You)? by Michael Franti & Spearhead
Father/daughter dance: I Loved Her First by Heartland

Picking out the music took us forever! I ended up delegating a lot of it- we let my dad and my husband’s mother pick the songs for their dances, and we got ideas from the bridal party on their entrance song.

My husband and I made our entrance to “Somewhere over the rainbow” by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. I loved it! I would have liked to leave the church to that song, but I got married in a Catholic church and had to pick from selected music.

I am a sucker for Canon in D for the processional.

And for father/daughter dance…we did What a Wonderful World (which was special to my dad and I), but my friend danced to “Forever Young” and I think that was really nice.

I’m gonna second whoever said that “Shout” and “Call Me Maybe” were dance floor hits. Everybody got on the floor for those at our wedding!

We did Sigh No More by Mumford and Sons for the honor seating/bridal party processional, and I walked to an acoustic version of Canon in D.

For our recessional, we did the Throne Room Title from Star Wars 🙂

Father/Daughter and Mother/Son dance (we combined them) was You’ve Got a Friend by James Taylor

Our first dance was Hold You in My Arms by Ray Lamontagne

And our last dance was Moon River by Frank Sinatra. It was perfect 🙂

In terms of dancing music – sometimes it’s helpful to pick decades or genres and go through iTunes or an Billboard Hot 100 list. I made a 90s playlist for my 30th birthday and just started with all the songs I used to listen to in high school that we used to dance to.

I Loved Her First by Heartland is my fave for father/daughter, but another good one is Tim McGraw’s My Little Girl…

I went through zillions of classical songs to find the perfect processional/recessionals… we ended up with Mozart Andante for the wedding party, Pachelbel’s Cannon for me, and Handel Hornpipe for the recessional… I loved them all, but to be honest, you’ll be so far in your own world during these, you won’t even hear them! haha!

For wedding party intro, we did In the Navy because my hubby is, well, in the Navy… but my second choice was Wrapped Around by Brad Paisley… super cute lyrics and I am obsessed with country…

I don’t know if anyone has suggested this yet or not, but, if you’re looking for more instrumental, try Vitamin String Quartet – SO many songs and all just instrumental versions (ie: Michael Buble – Everything).
Another thing you could do is add on your invitation R.S.V.P. card (if you’re using those) a place for guests to choose songs – that way you know you’re playing what they like!

I did the same song for the Bridal party processional and when I walked down the aisle, and it was perfectly timed so I got there just as the song ended…”Ho Hey” by The Lumineers (I tear up every time I hear this now). I had “Little Talks” by Monsters and Men on there just in case it took too long and another song needed to start–it’s a little tricky with songs with words to time it out. For the recessional we played “Home” by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. Other than that, we only did our first dance–“You are the Sunshine of My Life” by Stevie Wonder–we partly picked it because it is shorter and you feel really self-conscious during the first dance with everyone staring at you. The first dance song was “Crazy in Love” by Beyonce, which was perfect because it is a great, upbeat song. Other popular songs during the reception were “Big Poppa,” “Yeah,” “Shout,” “Poison” and “Hip Hop Hooray.”

Our Bridesmaids walked down the aisle to Something Pretty by Patrick Park. I walked down to Heartbeats by Jose Gonzalez and the Father Daughter Dance was It won’t be like this for long by Darius Rucker. Find songs you guys both like (start with a mixed CD if either of you have made one for a gift- that’s where all of our songs came from except the father/daughter dance). If you’ve never made a mixed CD for each other- make them and you may find the perfect song!
