Cozumel

by Meghann on October 12, 2011

Guess who ended up at the gym by herself yesterday morning?

IMG_4421.JPG

This girl.

Derek held his own for the first two mornings, but he lost his steam on the third.

Don’t worry, though – he made up for it later on in the day. πŸ˜‰

I think the key to a successful vacation workout is keeping it short and simple. Attempting to do too much will just eat up too much time and leave you dreading workouts instead of looking forward to them. I kept it light yesterday with a 2.5 mile run on the treadmill and my final New Rules of Lifting for Women Stage 3B workout.

IMG_4422.JPG

Equipment was limited, so I had to adjust a few moves to make it work, but I finished with a big smile on my face. πŸ™‚

Breakfast included a little taste of everything via the buffet line.

IMG_4423.JPG

I filled my plate with ham, waffle, french toast, potatoes, and eggs.

IMG_4424.JPG

Plus a side of fruit and a cinnamon pastry (love these things!)

IMG_4425.JPG

Our port of call for the day was hot and humid Cozumel, Mexico. Derek had never been and I had only been once via a cruise years ago. We made no concrete plans for the day and hoped to just enjoy our time on a beach somewhere.

IMG_4429.JPG

IMG_4430.JPG

Unfortunately we made the rookie mistake of asking a taxi driver to take us to a beach, any beach. We had envisioned a quiet, off-the-beaten-path beach, but that’s not where we ended up. Instead we paid $15 to be taken 20 minutes away to a crowded party beach where you had to purchase $12 drinks to use the chairs, ‘Mexican Nachos’ ran you $20, and – in the 10 minutes we were there – several locals asked if we wanted to parasail, jet ski, or have our hair braided. Ugh. Not what we had in mind.

IMG_4432.JPG

So, we hopped in another taxi and asked to be taken downtown for good Mexican food. This taxi driver brought us to La Mission.

IMG_4449.JPG

I really wanted a good local hole-in-the-wall place and the taxi driver swore it was the best in downtown.

IMG_4434.JPG

The chips and fresh salsa were really what won me over. Usually I’m not a fan of chips and salsa in a restaurant setting, but the chips were still warm and the salsa was so refreshing that I couldn’t stop eating them.

IMG_4436.JPG

Derek and I had different opinions on which drink goes best with Mexican food.

IMG_4437.jpg IMG_4438.jpg

Cerveza all the way! πŸ˜‰

IMG_4440.JPG

IMG_4439.jpg

Our meals each came with a very flavorful tortilla soup.

IMG_4441.JPG

Derek kept commenting how delicious the ‘won ton soup’ was. πŸ˜‰

IMG_4442.JPG

I guess he had never had tortilla soup before? πŸ˜‰

I had absolutely no idea what I wanted, so I ordered the combination platter with everything. When in Rome, right?

IMG_4443.JPG

My favorite was the tamale, but the chile rellano was equally as delicious. Everything had a great spice the really went well with the beer. Yum.

IMG_4447.JPG

After lunch we decided we had enough of Cozumel and thought a nice walk back to the ship was in order.

IMG_4455.JPG

Ummm…. what seemed like an innocent idea at the time, turned into an hour long 3 mile walk in the direct sun and heat. Yikes!

Looks can be so deceiving! We could see the ship in the distance and thought it was so. close. but the further we walked, the farther it seemed to be. Several taxis stopped – or honked – to see if we needed a ride, but the walk turned into an issue of pride – we kept thinking “we’ve come this far – why stop now?” We were determined to do this.

IMG_4454.JPG

When we finally did make it back to the ship, we couldn’t get in the pool fast enough!

IMG_4461.JPG

Also, ice cream became a given.

IMG_4458.JPG

That ice cream was earned! So was the hour long (shaded) poolside nap. Big time.

Have you ever been to Cozumel? I was later told we should have told the taxi to take us to the opposite side of the island where the quiet beaches are. We definitely learned our lesson with doing a little research before heading off the boat. Live and learn.

1 Anne October 12, 2011 at 3:19 pm

At our stop in Cozumel, we went to Tulum (the Mayan ruins). It was really cool, but I did not get a warm fuzzy about the rest of Cozumel. Too many people trying to take our money. I wonder if you’re doing the same cruise that we did. Our favorite stop was Isla Roatan. A taxi driver drove us to the other side of the island. We paid $20 each to sit on a beach, but it was beautiful and the taxi driver was a great guy. If you stop in Belize, beware of Belize city. We thought we’d “just take a walk”, and I’m surprised we didn’t get mugged at some point.

I went to Cozumel once when I visited the Mayan Riviera. We did a jeep tour of the island. I remember the quieter beaches on the opposite side of the island from the ferry port being very quiet but also very rocky.
It’s a beautiful Island though

Ironically, our Cozumel stop was the only one we planned on our cruise. We went on a tour to the ruins (the real ones – not the discover Mexico reconstructed ones) and it was actually really neat. Lots of mosquitoes, but we heard the whole story of how Cozumel had been an island specifically for weddings/honeymoons way long ago – how true that story was…who knows! But it was neat to see πŸ˜‰

I was in Cozumel around this time last year by way of cruise ship. It was so stinking humid! But we had fun, although the port city itself is insanely tourist-eske!

And running on a treadmill while on a cruise ship…insanely difficult! At least for me. We might have just had rough seas or something but I felt like I was drunk – I spent so much time swerving and grabbing for the side bars! Kudos for surviving 2.5 miles! πŸ™‚

You must be on the same cruise I went on when I was little. We went to Grand Cayman, Cozumel, and Ocho Rios, Jamaica. We went to a nice beach in Cozumel to snorkel, but I have NO idea what it was called. (It was 16 years ago.) So, I don’t remember much of it, just that the water was absolutely beautiful – so much different than water off the Gulf Coast.

A few years ago BF and I did the same cruise that you seem to be on, and we LOVED cozumel so much that we went back last April. Anyways, you’re right… the good beaches are further out, but they still would have run you a bit of a taxi fee. If you (or anyone else reading this) go back, I’d recommend Chankanaab park… you do have to pay to get in and it’s a little touristy, but you can dive, swim, swim with dolphins, just relax on the beach, etc.

I went to Cozumel last winter but not for a cruise, we stayed at an all inclusive resort way far away from the port. It was so nice and peaceful, and yes the other side of the island is uninhabited so it’s much more quiet in that area. Cozumel is great for divers and snorklers since it’s known for having some of the clearest blue waters.

My BF and I are thinking of doing a cruise this winter, neither of us has ever done one before. Any tips for first timers?

My husband and I went on a cruise earlier this year, and if its one thing I learned from all the reading I did was to research! Since all the boat excursions are usually overpriced, taxis are the way to go, but if you don’t have a plan, you could end up at an overpriced beach with tons of people. Which sucks if since you only have a short time in each port.

You guys are making me want to cruise again. Can your boat swing by AZ and pick me up πŸ˜‰

Next time you’re on the island and you’re looking for a truly authentic food experience, try the food tour offered on http://www.cozumelchef.com. You’ll go to some truly off the beaten path authentic places. La Mission can have good food, but locals rarely visit and taxi drivers get a commission for bringing you there.
