Move & Mix Update

by Meghann on September 14, 2011

Today I was feeling a ‘Meghann Creation’ for lunch.

It started innocently enough with a zucchini, yellow squash, and red onion that I sauteed with some Garlic Gold (HLS swag), cumin, salt and pepper.

Then it got interesting when I decided to add two eggs to the mix.

That’s when it got ugly – tasty – but, ugly. πŸ˜›

A spoonful of salsa and some pita wedges helped pretty it up. πŸ˜‰

What? I promise it was GOOD! πŸ™‚

Move & Mix: Six Months Later…

Last week Derek and I quietly celebrated six months of living together.

Crazy, right? Man, time sure does fly when you’re having fun!

I started writing a BIG post updating where we were with certain ‘Move & Mix’ projects, but that post turned into several stories I’ve been wanting to spit out since moving in with a guy. Instead of a MONSTER post, I thought it would be fun to share a few here and there on the blog over the next few weeks.

The first one revolving around our bathroom habits. πŸ˜‰ Here it goes.

His and Her Bathrooms

Ok, this might sound strange, but Derek and I have claimed our own bathrooms in the house. I know. Weird. But, with good reason.

See, the master toilet doesn’t flush well. At all. I tried using it for the first week or two, but you have to jiggle the handle a certain way, hold it down long enough to get the water moving, and -sometimes- you even have to go back for a double flush. One minute of doing your business and three minutes of messing with the flusher. It. Drove. Me. Insane. Especially when I missed a step and Derek would let me know of the little ‘surprises’ he found waiting in the toilet. Not cool.

So, I started using the perfectly flushable second bathroom toilet and haven’t looked back. Yes, it’s weird to have to walk out into the hallway to use the second toilet in the middle of the night when there’s one right next to the bed, but that’s my prerogative and I’m happy with it.

Oh, and trust me, I’ve spoke with Derek several times about the possibility of getting the toilet fixed (it also runs constantly – add that to the list of things that drive me crazy), but his response is “You just don’t know how to do it right. The toilet works for me.” Touche, Derek.

So, that’s the story of mine and Derek’s bathrooms. He even refers to the second bathroom as mine when referencing it in conversation. I guess this just one of those weird quarks you developed when living with someone.

Do any other live-in couples out there have separate bathrooms? Or am I the only crazy one?

1 Kristin September 14, 2011 at 2:49 pm

If Dave and I didn’t live in a 1 bed 1 bath flat, then I would definitely have my own girly bathroom!

2 Shanna, Like Banana September 14, 2011 at 2:51 pm

My hubby does his ahem, err number 2 biz in the guest bathroom only. He’s not allowed to do it in our master bath πŸ˜‰

Our master bathroom is TINY. Super tiny. Like you could sit on the toilet, put your feet in the shower, and wash your hands all at the same time. So that one belongs to my husband. The hall bathroom is mine, well, now I share it with my daughter, but thankfully at 17 months she doesn’t hog it too much yet :).

Yep! My husband and I have our own bathrooms. He gets ready for work much earlier than I do, so it makes more sense for him to use the hall bathroom and not have to wake me up. Works like a charm! πŸ™‚

6 Meghann September 14, 2011 at 2:52 pm

Another reason why I use the hall bathroom – I get up an hour before Derek does in the morning.

Ha love this! Hubby and I definitely use different bathrooms and you are not alone in this! Hubby gets the main bathroom in our room, and I get the half bath in the hallway. I’m fine with that because I can lay out all my girly toiletries and we’re not stepping over each others toes…and we can do our “business” in separate bathrooms – a definite must for me! πŸ˜‰

Haha i LOVE the idea of a second personal bathroom! Since I’m fairly potty-shy, that would be awesome for me– unfortunately, we have a one bed, one bath condo. So if I have to go, ahem… #2…, I need to close several doors and have total privacy before I’m comfortable to go.

And I’m married!!

Haha well that was TMI, but anyway. If I had another bathroom, we would definitely have personal ones!!

13 Gina @ Running to the Kitchen September 14, 2011 at 2:57 pm

My husband tends to use the guest bath upstairs instead of our master bath in our room and I FULLY support it! πŸ˜‰ Honestly, sharing a bathroom with a guy is probably one of the worst things about living together. I just do not enjoy cleaning toilets that have been “dirtied” by other people. Gross. Clorox bleach wipes might have literally saved my marriage.

My husband and I have always had separate bathrooms in all 3 places we’ve lived (I currently use the master & he uses the one in the upstairs hall) and I really feel this is one of the secrets to a happy marriage. πŸ™‚ It also cuts down on “getting ready” time since we can both shower and get ready in our own bathrooms at the same time.

When we build our dream house someday – we’re building a master bedroom with 2 separate bathrooms. I don’t know why this isn’t commonplace yet!

We had his and hers toothpaste. I am a neat squeezer, meaning I squeeze the tube from the bottom and work my way up. John is a middle man, meaning he grabs the tube and squeezes from the center. It drove me crazy! Then one day my MIL suggested separate tubes and all was right with the world again.

22 Crystal V September 14, 2011 at 4:13 pm

I cannot second this enough! We (well, I) have the EXACT same issue. I thought I was going to kill him. Then I realized the simplest solution was to buy his and hers toothpaste. Separate bathrooms here, too. However, I can’t agree with Derek not getting his toilet fixed! Whaaat? I’m assuming the condo pays the water bills? A running toilet will jack up the water bill, so if he had to pay it, maybe he’d get it fixed? lol

30 Meghann September 14, 2011 at 3:31 pm

The condo association pays for the water, so his thoughts are we aren’t paying for it. Nevermind the impact on the environment….

(We live in a small, 2 bedroom house with 1 closet in each bedroom, so the “master” is really just a slightly bigger room with no other “frills”.) I think it makes sense to have his/her bathrooms, if you have the space. My bf makes a mess shaving/in general, and I would appreciate some privacy in the AM while I’m getting ready. Ideally, would have two sinks in a master bath. You should totally get the toilet fixed, either way.

We don’t have a master bathroom but we do have two full baths – one on the first floor and one on the second floor. The first floor one is bigger so that one is mine. The second floor one is smaller so that one is my husband’s. But the second floor one is closer to the bedroom so if I really have to go in the middle of the night I’ll use that one. When hubby and I first got married we lived in a 537 square foot home (with two 60lb dogs!!) and shared the only bathroom. Hubby works a job where he does not have a set schedule…they tell him at the end of the day what time he needs be at work in the morning. This caused many frustrated mornings for me when I would get up at my normal time and he would be just getting into the shower, causing me to be late (and not be able to use the bathroom!). We currently have seperate bathrooms in our rental house and we also plan on each using a different bathroom in the home we are building. (Bonus…I only have to clean the bathroom I use, he has to clean his own!)

I like to shower in “the kids” bathroom when my shoulders hurt because they have a better shower massager. But usually B&I shower together. Yes, there are 2 showerheads and a lot of space, but again – nunya.

48 Kate @ alittlelikeheaven September 14, 2011 at 4:45 pm

Yep! I am right there with you. My husband and I have been married for over a year… I dont know about you?, but when I dry my hair I always shed πŸ™‚ so I like having a seperate bathroom to get ready in the morning, spread out my makeup on the counter, and store my tampons/etc, in a different bathroom. Now its just the normal.. I call it my “bathroom” all-the-time. I only use the master bath for shower, and teeth brushing. It works out awesome! For now on .. we will always have 2 baths, no turning back.

50 Rachel Wilkerson September 14, 2011 at 4:54 pm

YES! I have been meaning to write about this. I always said, even before I had a bf, that I’d need separate bathrooms when living together. I just need my personal space in my bathroom to keep all my beauty products. Also, I’m just not the kind of person who wants to talk about what a bathroom is actually for and Eric is fine with that. Also I don’t want to clean his bathroom and he doesn’t want to clean mine! SO when I moved into his two-bedroom place in the spring, we decided he’d keep his bedroom and closet and I’d get the master bathroom and closet. We CAN use the other’s but we rarely do, even if that means a longer walk. It works great for us!

The water bill is included in the condo fees. Trust me – I’ve tried that argument too!

63 Emily G. September 15, 2011 at 12:40 pm

This is how my condo association works as well. My downstairs bathroom has the same problem but it’s easily fixed. However, my thinking is while yes the association does pay the water bill – they are having to pay a higher price for their water bill in lieu of sprucing up the area (IE: power washing, new roofs, better lawn care, etc). They could also use the extra money to put in reserves in case of a major problem being fixed meaning 1) Yall won’t have a special assessment to pay or 2) HOA fees won’t increase at year end. Just my two cents!

64 Meghann September 15, 2011 at 1:06 pm

Thanks! I’m gong to try this tactic with Derek. Truth be told, he’s not a fan of the HOA and this is his way to say ‘screw you’ when in reality it’s really screwing us in the end.

I like getting ready next to him in the morning, although lately he’s been getting up suupppper early so I don’t get up until he’s about ready to leave.

When we moved into our house, my boyfriend started using the bathroom in the guest room to take care of his “business.” I’m not complaining at all because I’ve wandered into the guest room not knowing that he had just left a few times and it wasn’t pretty!

omg! I thought we were the only one’s! My hubby and I have our own seperate bathrooms as well and I LOVE IT! Mine is in the hallway as well, but I do not mind at all taking few extra steps to go to the CLEAN bathroom! lol My hubby’s is decorated in green (of course I decorated it, cuz if it was up to him he wouldn’t even have a clean towel lol) And mine is in pretty girly colors! It has recently become my 3 month old daughters bathroom as well, so I also have lots of rubber ducky’s and hooded towels in there lol πŸ™‚ But yeah…I NEVER want to go back to sharing! πŸ™‚
