Belly Buttons

by Meghann on June 14, 2011

Sit down. I’m afraid I have some bad news for you.

Are you ready for it?

Here it goes….

I don’t have photos of my lunch.

I know, I know – I’m a terrible blogger. I grabbed the wrong SD card on my way out the door and didn’t even think about it until I plugged an empty SD card in my laptop at Starbucks.

I’m simply mortified…

Feel free to unsubscribe…

I will understand…

Kidding!

Well, not kidding about not having the photos – those are still stuck in my DSLR at home – but I am kidding about being so melodramatic. Lunch was pretty normal anyways – just an apple, some carrots, green beans, and peanut butter. No biggie.

What I really want to talk to you about is piercings anyways.

Yes, piercings.

How many piercings do you have? I think at one point I had 5 different sets of holes in my body.

More specifically – Belly Button Piercings

You see, last Saturday my belly button ring fell to the bottom of Lucky’s Lake – never to be seen again.

IMG_0613.JPG

RIP Belly Button Ring!

I’ve had my belly button pierced since the day I turned 18 (I literally got it the day I turned 18 because I wasn’t allowed to do it a minute before), but for the last 4 or 5 years I haven’t really given much thought to it. In that time I’ve had the same boring ring in and rarely had a chance to show my belly button(not that I was looking for opportunities!).

As of right now I’m torn between buying a replacement ring and just keeping it as is. I’d be hard pressed to think of any friends that still have theirs pierced, but I feel like ditching it forever is leaving another piece of my youth behind. I already had to lost the nose piercing when I entered the real world (and I still miss it).

So, the question is… I’m 26 – is that too old to have my belly button pierced still?

What do you think?

1 Becky June 14, 2011 at 3:15 pm

I’m 27 and mine is still pierced too. I work in a conservative field (finance) and wear a suit to work, and so I mostly forget about it during the day, but it’s a fun reminder that 27 really isn’t that old.

2 JunieB June 14, 2011 at 3:15 pm

Well seeing as how I was almost mid 30’s when I got mine, its all relative to the individual.

Mine fell out when we were building a fence at new house and I was carrying lumber (across my stomach) :O)

Anyway, I waited too long to have a replacement put in and the dude said “i will have to stick you again” to which I promptly said “no thanks!”

3 Liv @ The Salty n' Sweet June 14, 2011 at 3:15 pm

Well since most people don’t usually see it, unless you’re at the beach, I don’t think you HAVE to leave that part of your youth behind! If it’s still important to you, then get a new one. But if you’re just hanging on to it as a reminder of the young Meghann, then maybe it’s not totally necessary. Do what makes you happy πŸ™‚

I’m about to turn 26 and I still have my belly button pierced; I don’t plan on taking it out until I’m pregnant! Actually, to be honest I’ve never taken it out because I’m too scared, so the ring I have in is the one that I was pierce with when I was 15!

I also have 5 ear piercings (2 and 3) and 2 tiny tattoos πŸ˜€

I had my nose pierced for four years. I took it out like 2 years ago and still sometimes miss it. I mean, if you like the bb ring, sure, buy another one. I wouldn’t go out and get it repierced if it closed though.

I have 7 piercings, 6 in my ears and my bellybutton. I recently took out one of my earrings and have been debating taking out my bellybutton ring but I think my stomach looks so funky without it. I’ve had mine since I was 16 and I guess I’m just not used to seeing it without a ring. On the bright side, it’s a piercing you’ll never have to worry about removing (because no one will know you have it) if you decide to enter corporate world again…

No 26 is not too old!

Mine fell out about a year ago when I was at a boot camp class. I just kinda decided I didn’t want the metal in me any more… and I was too cheap to go buy one πŸ˜‰ I also just noticed my scar is getting better!

I did the same thing, I rain to a tattoo parlour and diamond dave pierced by stomach the day I turned 18. I’ve been debating getting rid of it also. I feel a bit old at 28, on the other hand, my sister-in-law got hers pierced at 35 because my brother designed her a 1K diamond belly ring as an incentive. I have been kind of holding out for a some serious belly bling, but it’s kind of unlikely that I will actually ever get it. Let me know what you decide!

I still have mine in and I’m 28, although I’ve been debating on when I should remove it. I had my tongue pierced for a really long time and took that out. I nearly swallowed a ring after the ball came off and figured that was a sign to let it go. Hah.

Completely agree! I don’t have one (never have), but I feel that it’s in a “private” enough place that if you want it, keep it. That said, if it’s not you anymore, don’t be afraid to move on. It’s your heart and soul that make you feel young, not some little piece of metal on your navel. : )

I’ve had my nose pierced since 18 and think I might just never let it close. I’m 25 now and I already don’t wear it to work, but I don’t see why I can’t have it as an option when I’m 80 πŸ˜‰

20 Tomboy Fashionista - Kendra June 14, 2011 at 3:24 pm

Geez, I hope 26 isn’t too old for a belly piercing (and nose piercing), because I still have my belly pierced (since my 18th bday too!), and I JUST got my nose (re)pierced a year ago, and I LOVE it!! I feel like I have a fairly conservative look, but I don’t feel conservative on the inside. So it gives a little outward nod to people that there is more to me than what they might think.

So I say, if YOU love it, keep it!! Who cares what anyone else thinks??

21 Gina @ Running to the Kitchen June 14, 2011 at 3:24 pm

I’m 29 and my belly button is still pierced. Had it since I was 18 too. I want to take it out but I fear the hole in the middle of my stomach! If mine fell out though I’d probably leave it that way.

i like it, but i can’t picture myself at 30 with the piercing still there. I think before the big 3-0 i’ll discard it.

however, a belly button ring isn’t typically visible. so if you like it keep it!

I’ve been thinking about this recently, too. I’m 25 and still wear mine. I think 30 will be my cutoff — though I don’t judge others who wear them longer than that. As long as you’ve still got the abs for it (which you clearly do), rock it!

27 allison @ thesundayflog June 14, 2011 at 3:26 pm

gah!!! same boat!! at one point in my life i had my cartilage, tragus, nose, and belly button pierced. took out my cartilage because it hurt all.the.time, lost my nose ring when i was in africa 3 years ago and never bothered to get a new ring. i had it repierced when i returned home but it didnt look right anymore. i miss it all the time! and lastly i took my belly ring out a few months ago after having it pierced for over 7 years, and within a few weeks it was closed. i still think my stomach looks weird without it, but at 24 years old (on thursday!) i decided to just keep it out πŸ™ time to grow up sometime i suppose….

28 Lish June 14, 2011 at 3:26 pm

If it makes you happy then I say replace it!

I have a handful of friends who still have them. Most of those who don’t have them is because they never replaced them after pregnancy. I think only one friend actually put in a stretchable ring while pregnant in order to keep her hole from closing or tearing.

29 Hayley @ Hayley Daily June 14, 2011 at 3:27 pm

Over time, I got over my belly ring. I got mine done when I was 13 (no, that’s not a typo, lol) and I had it until I was about 20ish. I’m 23 now. The hole is still there, and I think I could put a ring through it (I haven’t tried in years though) but I just don’t really want to, I guess.

I also had my nose pierced for 6 years which I LOVED and only took out because my big-girl job made me, before I left for graduate school.

And then for a few hours I had my monroe pierced…it just wasn’t ‘me’ so I ended up taking it out after less than a day. lol.

I’ve been thinking the same thing! I’ve had mine pierced since I was sixteen and really didn’t think much about it after college. I think I’ve had the same ring in it for 4 years now (ew? perhaps). I’m interested to see what you decide!

34 Jordan P @ food, sweat, and beers June 14, 2011 at 3:30 pm

My boss-lady just had her first baby and didn’t take her belly button ring out until she was about to pop!! Not sure if she’s going to put it back in, but she was in her mid-thirties and told me every day she looked down at it it made her feel young and reminded her of fun times again.

I never had mine pierced, and would feel silly now (as a 23 year old), but I had my eyebrow pierced for a while. Then, in my senior year, I just decided to take it out, that it wasn’t right for me. I didn’t want to put in a retainer for job interviews etc, and I just felt like I was at the point in my life where I was ready to not have it pierced…. Now, I have to admit, I’m craving a new tattoo!

PS have you ever explained the origin of yours on here?

I got my belly button pierced when I was 19, and it stayed in for a year until my mother saw it and had a heart attack (not literally, but almost.) One week later, it got caught on some fabric and I had to take it out. I still have a scar from where it was yanked! Sometimes, I do miss it, but I agree with an above commenter in that it was more of a representation of my college years. In my mind, it really has no place in an “adult” life.

But if you like it and want it, who cares? Go for it! Life is too short to contemplate having a spike through your belly button. πŸ˜‰

39 Kalynn June 14, 2011 at 3:33 pm

While I don’t think 26 is too old to have or get your belly button pierced, I decided to take mine out a few years ago. I was 19 when I had mine done (I’m 26 now) and I realized that I simply never showed it off unless I was in a bikini at the beach or pool, which wasn’t very often. So I decided to take it out. It didn’t fall out, and I didn’t lose it. I just decided that it didn’t serve a purpose to me any more. When I first had it done, I wanted people to see it and I thought it was cute, but I sort of became indifferent to whether I had it or not. I wasn’t excited about it anymore. So, I say, if you still want it pierced, then get a replacement and keep the piercing (as soon as possible so it doesn’t close up)!

I got mine pierced as soon as I turned 18 too. After a few years, I sort of forgot about it. Then in college (age 22) after I had gained about 30 pounds, it started to irritate me. Soon after, it fell out and I left it out. Rather than heal up completely, some sort of skin plug (gross, I know) formed. I didn’t notice.

After a 50 pound weight loss (age 24), I was going through a box of old jewelry and found some belly button rings. I wondered if I could still get one in. When I tried (with some neosporin), the weird skin plug thing (ew ew ew) came out and the belly ring went in. I’ve kept it ever since.

I know it seems a little vain/petty, but now I keep it simply because I can. It’s staying for a few more years until after I get married and start having babies.

It sounds like you want to keep it. Why would you bother writing about it if you didn’t. You’re only as young as you feel, so age shouldn’t matter. If you like it, keep it.

I have thirteen other piercings, all of those being on my ears except my nose ring. I’m in an internship program in Washington, DC for the summer and no one told me I had to take any of them out (or cover any of my tattoos) so I think that shows that society is becoming more accepting of body modifications. I sure hope 26 isn’t too old to still have it because I got mine when I turned 35! It was my way of celebrating getting older and the fact that I was healthier than when I was 20! Barely anybody sees it, and when they do (bathing suit season) they just comment that they like and they would get it if their stomach looked like mine.

63 Tracy June 14, 2011 at 3:59 pm

I cannot even remember when I got my belly button pierced, but it’s been years… possibly 10… A couple years ago the ring I had in it fell out and from then on I just kind of forgot about it. The only reminder is when I’m at the pool or beach and that’s not frequent. It annoys me that I have this hole, so I’m often tempted to get a ring to add back to the piercing. I see women 10-20 years older than me with their belly buttons pierced, and a line of kids behind them. I see no big deal. If anything I think, wow, she’s got it going on still! I think it all depends on how you carry yourself, but like any piercing they will eventually close…

Fun fact: when I was 15 or so, I went into Boston with friends and did the thing I had been EXPRESSLY forbidden to do: pierce the cartilage of my ear. I got home and tried to hide it, but my eagle-eyed dad (who is super liberal EXCEPT about this and smoking) saw the earring and sat me down, grabbed some pliers and took that thing out of my ear. He was so mad and 15 years later, he STILL talks about how mad and disappointed he was in me that day.

74 Jenny June 14, 2011 at 4:17 pm

I’m 26 & have had mine pierced since I was 15 (it was the only piercing I was allowed to get since it wouldn’t be seen). I absolutely love it and while I don’t switch out the rings or see it as often as I used to when I was younger, I will still probably keep it until I get pregnant and am forced to take it out. I think they are fun and playful and you should definitely keep it if you still like it!

75 Erin @ GoBananasBlog June 14, 2011 at 4:19 pm

Don’t feel too bad…my husband lost his wedding ring the minute he got in Crystal River for a manatee encounter. That was a pretty serious oops! Now he looks like a single man out with a married lady!

76 Lindsay June 14, 2011 at 4:25 pm

No way! I’m 28 and got mine when I was 18 and in Italy. It was my souvenir!! It got really infected once and my Dr suggested I remove it, but I refused and the infection passed. Maybe if I ever get prego it will be time, but not until then!

79 Nicole June 14, 2011 at 4:34 pm

I’m pretty heavily modified (tattoos), but I have my fair share of piercings too! I don’t think you can get too old for piercings. I’ve got two in my nose (septum and nostril), holes in my ears, and my belly button. I haven’t kept any jewelery in the belly button for over a year, but I just stuck something through it to see if it’s still open- YEP!

I don’t see myself taking out my two nose piercings anytime soon. I can hide the septum one if it’s needed, and I don’t see the nostril piercing being a concern in a professional sense!

Hahaha oh serious problem indeed! If it makes you feel better, I spent a moment to visualize your lunch carefully for a similar effect.

Is 26 too old for a piercing… that’s a tough question. I’ll admit, when I saw it once in a photo on your blog, I thought “oh, she has her bellybutton pierced, she must be younger than me.” Not in a bad way, just my natural reaction is that particular piercing is more popular with college-aged gals. So, I guess take that for what you will.

I don’t think it’s wrong at any age, but people will probably think you’re younger if you have one. And if you’re 40 people will think you’re a cougar. And if you’re 80 people will think you are awesome.

My friends mum got hers done when she was around 40 (she got hers done the same time as my friend).

This is kind of funny. I’m a 29 year old teacher and got my belly button piereced when I was 18. Back in September one night after work I noticed it fell out, I looked in our room and couldn’t find it. I just figured it must have been meant to be and I would no longer have it. So the next day I’m at work and one of my kiddos raises her hand to tell on another student:

Sally: Mary has my diamond ring!!!
Mary: Nuh-Uh! I dropped it on the floor, it’s mine!
So I go look at the ring and low and behold it’s MY belly button ring!
Me: Girls, I know for a fact this neither of yours. I know the person who lost this yesterday. Mary, please hand me the ring.
Sally and Mary: ::give each other mean looks::

If I wouldn’t have been so annoyed the girls both lied, I totally would have laughed that they thought a belly button ring was regular ring! So anyway, I’ve never got a new one to put back in since then, but I feel like it looks so weird!

No one sees it unless in a swimsuit, I just like it. There are some things that don’t look as good as a person ages, I think any age can pull off a belly button ring if it suits you. (Though I think ‘belly shirts’ are not good on anyone of any age. Lol.)

101 Ellie@fitforthesoul June 14, 2011 at 5:07 pm

Hmmm well~I don’t think it reeaallly matters how old a person is b/c anyways for me, I wouldn’t want to see a 40 something or 50 something year old’s belly out in public anyway! haha. 104 Becky June 14, 2011 at 5:17 pm

It’s your body, and you should of course do what feels right for YOU but since you still miss the nose piercing, why not get that redone instead of getting a new belly button piece? They sell super tiny nose pieces (I have a tiny silver stud in my nose, and most people don’t even notice my nose is pierced). From the way you wrote this, I got the sense that you weren’t as excited about the belly button piercing anymore, although I have to admit that I am sort of biased because I’ve never been as much of a fan of belly button piercings as other piercings.

105 Shannon June 14, 2011 at 5:18 pm

I don’t think 26 is too old, when your oldest child is asking you for a belly button herself…that may be too old. I had one and it rejected now all I have is some ugly scar tissue. The older you get the less important it is, in my opinion.

106 Danielle June 14, 2011 at 5:18 pm

I think if you have to ask if you’re too old… then you probably are. Imo the general age to lose the bellybutton ring would be once you turn 25.

This is a great discussion! I think it’s less an issue about age and more about what style, image, and impression you want to convey. I’m not a fan of belly button rings on people of any age because I don’t care for the appearance of them and I think they *can* look a little trash-tastic (no offense to anyone! I’m sure everyone here has cute little belly button piercings). On the other hand, people who tend to like belly button rings would probably be less likely to think there’s an age where we draw the line on who should wear them. I guess my bottom line opinion is that you should wear what you like regardless of age, and even if there is an age limit, 26 is probably not it.

I really never gave it any thought the past few years and nobody really ever saw it that much anyways. I got mine done on my 18th birthday too! I kept it in until I was 21, but took it out after I had gained some weight. Once I lost the weight, I put it back in for a while, but just decided that I had kind of outgrown it. My boyfriend really liked it, and he keeps wanting me to put it back in, but the hole is partially closed now and I don’t want to get it re-pierced.

Do what feels right, but if you’re going to replace it, get a new one sooner than later so the hole doesn’t close!

I think piercings are a really personal thing, and people get them for any number of reasons. If you still like yours, rock it. πŸ™‚ I don’t think there’s any age where you ever “outgrow” anything that has significance to you.

PS – And I firmly disagree that there’s anything ‘trashy’ about it!

I have mine pierced still (I’m late 20s) and think it’s fine. Nobody usually sees it unless you’re intimate with someone or out at a beach in a swimsuit!! Part of the reason I don’t remove it is because I have skin healing issues and worry about how it would heal, but otherwise – I just don’t care whether or not it’s there, so I leave it be. It only annoys me when the ball comes off!!

I had mine from when I was 20 until a couple of months ago.. which ended up being over 10 years! I only took it out because I am pregnant.. I miss it.. but I figure I’m a mommy now πŸ˜€ I say keep it! 26 is still super young!!! πŸ˜€

Seriously? Why should you remove it??It’s on a “covered” spot, so keep it.Taking it out permanently or not takes a second, not so if it closes…I actually never thought about removing mine, and I’m 32 πŸ˜€ it’s part of me and I plan on keeping it as long as i can πŸ™‚ I also had ears piercings, those were “exposed” so I only left two left and one right, more “elegant” for me.

I say go for it if you like it…I had mine until my last child – I took it out while pregnant – and just never put it back in. I have my ears done and my tonue done (8 yrs) I actually foget it’s there…you don’t really see that.

I had to take mine out for hospitalization at 22 and never replaced it. But it was fun to have a awhile. If you like it buy another fun one.

In the past I had both my nose and belly button pierced. With both piercings I woke up one day sick of them and didn’t think twice before taking them out. And I never regret taking either out. Nothing against belly button piercings and I don’t think they have anything to do with age…

I took my belly button ring out the weekend of New Years Eve this year, at 26. But I’m pregnant and decided that it was going to need to come out sooner rather than later and now that I’m closer to 30 than 20, I can let it go. πŸ™‚

I never pierced my belly button ’till I was 38 and I’m now 45 and have no plans to take it out. I still love it. I don’t bare my mid-drift as a matter of fashion, but I like having it all decorated up for my private times πŸ˜‰

It’s funny you ask this, because I jut got back from a week-long trip with my small (37 students and 5 teachers) senior class and supervisors. On the first morning of the trip a group of us seniors were talking about the same thing, and all of us who didn’t have piercings or tatoos said we had no interest in them, because we knew 5-10 years down the line they wouldn’t mean the same thing, BUT those who did have tatoos and piercings firmly stated they would always be special and mean something becasue they were a reminder of that part of their life. I think if it is no longer you, give it up. Why hold on to something that isn’t you anymore. You will still have those photos and memories, and who you are now should be honored too.
