Closet Cleanse

by Meghann on February 3, 2011

Along with cleaning out the freezer, moving means cleaning out my closet.

IMG_6493.JPG

That’s three bags worth of old jeans, shirts, and shoes that no longer have a place in my closet.

Oy vey.

This was really hard for me. I tend to hold on to certain items for memory sake (like old cheerleading shorts or fraternity formal shirts). These are pieces of clothing I haven’t worn in years and are well pass their prime, but I could technically still put on if I wanted to. It’s hard to give up things that are so much a part of your past.

Except now those cheerleading shorts have been replaced with real running shorts and those fraternity tees have been replaced with race tees. Also, those jean shorts I once loved so much are now two sizes too big and I’m sure will get more wear in another person’s closet.

I’m dropping the clothes off at Plato’s Closet first this afternoon to see if I can even get a little $$ from then and then the rest is going straight to a battered woman’s shelter.

IMG_6499.JPG

I hope they all find good homes. πŸ™‚

Lunch was…. interesting.

IMG_6501.JPG

It started off as a stir fry of veggies (broccoli, carrots, onion, garlic, mushrooms, and purple potatoes) with sesame oil and soy sauce. Then I changed my mind and added two eggs to make an omelet scramble of sorts.

IMG_6504.JPG

The tortilla was a last minute add in for the egg burrito effect. πŸ˜‰

Meals like these are why i love cooking. You can start out making one thing and then end up with something complete different if the mood so chooses. Cooking isn’t an exact science. It’s about experimenting and using your instincts to figure out what works.

Baking, however, is completely opposite. That’s why baking and I don’t get along as well. πŸ˜‰

I think baking allows for a lot of creativity…as long you stay within certain boundaries! Plus, I’d rather eat cookie mistakes over egg scramble mistakes any day πŸ™‚

I did a closet cleanse a while ago, and even though it was kind of difficult at the time, I promise you will feel SOOO much better when you’re done! And on a very positive note…. sometimes it kinda provides an excuse for shopping! πŸ˜‰

I desperately need to do a closet cleanse! I just absolutely HATE getting rid of things. I pull something out that I haven’t worn in years and think, “Well, one day I MIGHT need this.” Silly thinking, I know. Maybe I’ll do it soon πŸ™‚

I do think there’s a lot more science with baking, but it still allows for creativity. I’m trying to make the perfect muffin, and it’s amazing what a change in 1/4 cup of certain ingredients will do!

I do a closent cleanse usually once every 3-4 months but it’s been a while, so I need to do it again!

Ha, I cleaned out my closet this weekend and have over 100 clothing items to donate. Its crazy how much stuff we keep that either doesn’t fit, doesn’t look good, or otherwise just should not be worn anymore.

I definitely need to get a lot of clothes out of my closet! There is so much stuff I don’t wear anymore!

I looooove doing closet cleanses like this! I did the same thing right before I moved and was able to donate a ton of stuff. At first it’s hard to part with certain items, but I find that once they’re gone I NEVER miss them. I’m never like, “Oh man, I wish I hadn’t thrown away that American Eagle sweater from 7th grade that still might kind of fit and that Joey Potter wore on Dawson’s Creek…”

I always procrastinate with the closet cleaning–for years at a time! But it is good not only for those who receive your old stuff, but I think it clears your subconcious too!
Don’t give up on baking! You must be like a mad alchemist in the kitchen, but once you get the hang of it, it is the best therapy. And there is nothing like the aroma that fills the house (especially when u move to a new one!)
BTW the photos of your lunch look delicious.

And that is why I enjoy moving. It gives me big motivation to purge all of my junk!

I have the exact opposite issue- I love baking because it’s an exact science. I’m not so great with cooking because it’s not πŸ™‚ I had a hard time at Plato’s Closet; they were really strict about what they would and would not take.

I’m determined to learn more about food and what is paired well together. I’m determined to do this while not eating a zillion things and gaining lots of weight. I really want to go to cooking school, but instead I’m going to start reading more blogs, getting a few books, watching the food network, and testing it out in the kitchen.

I’m so bad about keeping clothes because of memories. When I moved across the US last year though I had to trim everything down. Then I got pregnant and couldn’t wear anything I brought! I’m using this to justify a shopping spree after I pop the kiddo out πŸ˜‰

I just did this during Christmas break and it was HARD. For some reason I was hanging on to stuff I wore IN COLLEGE and I didn’t want to give it up. I’m 32 and I have 2 kids – where did I think I was going to be wearing this stuff?

That’s why I enjoy cooking too – it’s a lot harder to salvage something on the fly when you are baking.

I purge/edit/donate from my closet ALL The time! I use Buffalo Exchange (like Plato’s closet ) first, then donate the rest. It keeps clutter down and helps someone else out. And that way I can see what I have in my closet that i WANT to wear…not the old stuff that I never reach for anyway!

I had to get rid of almost all of my sentimental clothes recently (another story for another time), and I set up a quick photo area with a few lights and snapped digital shots of my favorites. I can keep the photos forever without taking up the closet space or risking “losing the memories”.

I love cooking for the same reason. It makes leftovers more fun too! I love eating casseroles or stews on salads or toast.

Just a tip, I have a friend who works at plato’s closet who said that they tend to “buy” more from you if you bring it in small quantities. If you don’t have a lot or don’t feel like stopping multiple times though, just one go should be fine.

45 natalie (the sweets life) February 3, 2011 at 9:26 pm

i definitely have a hard time getting rid of old clothes too…it’s probably the reason my clothing is currently in THREE different rooms of our house!!!

46 ezzie February 3, 2011 at 10:45 pm

I have the hardest time parting with old clothes too! It’s like, hey, maybe I don’t want to hand it down to my little cousin. I could still fit in it if I wanted to. πŸ˜›
And I completely agree with your thoughts on cooking!

47 Amy (adore today) February 4, 2011 at 1:58 am

I totally agree with you! I’d much rather cook than bake. Cooking you can just throw something in a pot without measuring and it comes out good. Baking is so specific and if you don’t get the right amount of key ingredients, it’s over.

48 RunningOnCoffee February 5, 2011 at 3:01 pm

I have a big bag waiting to be donated, I just need to make the special trip to donate them to a place that will actually USE the clothes (they’re still in good condition! Just not my size or style) as opposed to those drop boxes in parking lots that still benefit a good cause, but I’m pretty sure they just shred & sell the resulting material by weight.

I’ve got a lot more that I could give away too, I’m just having a hard time getting rid of it.
i.e. stuff that’s in great shape, still fits, but I just haven’t worn it in a year+
