We Be Rollin’

by Meghann on October 31, 2010

Happy Halloween!

I celebrated with a12 mile training run, how about you?

IMG_3305.JPG

12 miles at a 9:04 pace. Not bad. Not bad. πŸ˜‰

The weather has cooled down just a tad here (finally!) and I could really feel a difference in my pace. Holding a 9:00 min/pace didn’t exactly feel ‘easy’, but it didn’t feel overly challenging either. It was just enough effort to know for sure – in a race setting – I could hold it for 14 more miles no worries. At least that’s what the plan is. πŸ˜‰

Before my run I had half of an arnold’s thin with some peanut butter, pumpkin butter, and a broken dark chocolate Adora disk.

IMG_5202.JPG

Post -run I had a mish mash of eats.

IMG_5210.JPG

Leftover Pumpkin Cinnamon Rolls (I ate the other half of the second one while the eggs were cooking).

IMG_5211.JPG

After a quick reheat in the microwave they were still just as good as yesterday

Check out the new gift I received in the mail this past week.

IMG_3307.JPG

Foam rollers are one of those things I always tell myself “I really need that” but never actually get around to buying for myself. Apparently Ashley couldn’t stand for my procrastination any longer and sent me a giant foam roller with the note “Use. This. Now.” Yes, Ma’am.

IMG_3312.JPG

Hurt. So. Good.

IMG_3313.JPG

The foam roller came in handy after my run today. I rolled my IT bands and worked out all the tension that had been building up all morning. Yes, it was painful, but in these situation pain equals pleasure. I’m really excited to have my own foam roller on hand. This baby should aide in my long run recovery and leave my legs feeling fresh and new. πŸ™‚

I tried to teach Derek how to use it too, but he never caught on.

IMG_3315.JPG

He kept saying it didn’t hurt and didn’t understand where the pain was suppose to come from. A clear sign he wasn’t doing it right. I made him watch some ‘how to foam roll’ YouTube videos, but then we got distracted and he never gave it a second chance.

IMG_3316.JPG

Don’t worry though. I will teach him the benefits of foam rolling. πŸ™‚

Thanks for the awesome gift Ashley! I owe ya!!

The extra long foam roller can be found in Ashley’s OpenSky Shop. πŸ™‚

Alright, time to enjoy my Sunday.

See ya!

Foam rollers are the best! I have a white one (which is the least dense), and it has worn out. I want to buy a darker color because the darker the color, the more dense it is. (I think I have that right.)

Yup, that is exactly correct! That is why most gyms have black ones. They can handle the use more than the white ones. πŸ™‚

I just got a foam roller for my birthday!! My mom went to the running store to buy it and the guy was explaining to her how they are so popular and hard to keep in stock….she just doesn’t get it.

I was looking back at some old posts and saw that you did post marathon weight reflections for 2 of your marathons. Are you going to write a reflection about Chicago?

I’m so glad you enjoyed the foam roller pain. Derek may be leaning too far back or forward. I did the same thing when I started and then REALIZED when I hit it on the spot! πŸ™‚
Also, FYI for any readers or commenters, the roller is $5 off right now in my shop http://shopopensky.com/healthyhappierbear. At $22 this $20 cheaper than anything at Sports Authority! πŸ™‚

Yay for getting a foam roller!! They are amazing. Trust me, if you have a big enough knot in your leg, it CAN hurt enough to make you cry! haha

I hurt just looking at those pictures!

My husband won’t let me buy a foam roller, because he has a set of medieval torture instruments (aka triggerpoint http://www.tptherapy.com/) which do the same basic job but hurt even more.

25 Katy (The Singing Runner) October 31, 2010 at 1:41 pm

Ahhhh the foam roller! I need to get myself one of those. I had to use them back in PT last summer.

Like you, I started my Halloween with a run (not quite as long- only a 5K race, but I did make a PR) Have a wonderful Halloween!

If he didn’t feel it, he is not doing it right πŸ˜‰

31 Ron October 31, 2010 at 2:02 pm

Traditionally, the black rollers are higher density, but not always. And the pain you feel depends not only on the firmness of the roller, but also the quality of your muscle tissue — i.e. whether you have a lot of adhesions or not. Generally, the more it hurts, the more you need it. Derek might not be doing it right, might not have a specific problem with his IT bands, or might be ready for a slightly more aggressive approach. If the later, get him a RumbleRoller (www.rumbleroller.com).

32 Katrina October 31, 2010 at 2:56 pm

I spent 9 months in physical therapy due to a NASTY case of ITBS. In fact, that’s what prompted me to start my blog over 2 years ago just from sheer frustration of not being able to run. After being released from therapy, Mr. Masochism told me to get a foam roller and mimic the manipulation that he did daily for so many weeks. IT WORKS! It doesn’t replace pt, but it helps keep my IT bands loose but I have to do it consistently. It gradually stopped hurting so much which told me I was doing it right and my bands were loose. Now, it only hurts when I have tough trail run OR when some hip inflammation kicks in. It literally keeps me running. πŸ™‚
