Cooking for Others

by Meghann on September 15, 2010

My boss told me today that she would pay me to make her lunch everyday.  She was flipping through my blog and practically drooling over my food pornography. She said if I could help her lose a few pounds and stop her from eating fast food at her desk that she would even throw in a bonus.

I may have to take her up on that…

I receive offers similar to that all the time – from my family members, from my friends, from co-workers, from random people on the street, etc. – everyone wants me cook for them. And some offer to pay! 😉

What they don’t know is that I love to cook and – in all seriousness – would take them up on that offer in a heartbeat. How cool would it be to prepare personalized, tasty (and healthy!) meals for a deserving person as a full time job? It would probably rank right up there with blogging about those meals.

Maybe I should rethink this whole business world thing and head to culinary school?

If only funds were unlimited and jobs were guaranteed post-school. Le sigh.

IMG_9353

At least I still have cooking for myself – and Derek on occasion – and I promise cooking for myself never gets old.

Especially when it’s as easy as fancy left overs for lunch.

That right there is a bed of spinach surrounded by a ripe wedges of tomato and topped with polenta and left over eggplant stuffing mix from last night.

And this is the rest of my green smoothie from this morning.

Earlier I had 1/2 a Clif Bar from my emergency stash for a snack.

IMG_9332

I had accidentally packed my intended snack for the day – handful of nuts- in my hot yoga bag and left it in the car. Ooppsss… I guess that’s what emergency stashes are for, right?

Check out my latest project at my real job.

My company’s CEO was recently featured in a local magazine and I was tasked with framing said article on the cheap.

Instead of framing the actual news paper I purchased a cheap frame from Joanns.

IMG_9361

And printed the cover & article via PDF to fit the 8×10 inserts.

Cost saving and space saving. I was quite proud of my little project. 🙂

Who says article framing should cost $500?!?! Not I! 🙂

That lunch is so PRETTY! It’s like a giant flower, I love it 🙂
Half a Clif bar? Impressive, those things are way too delicious to have just half 😛

I am such a picky eater I think if you cooke for me I would end up trying something new everyday.. which might not be a bad hting.. My bf wants to blindfold me and stick foods in my face so I try new things.

You could definitely do the cooking for your boss thing. Could be the start to a wonderful cooking or catering opportunity!

Lunch does look beautiful by the way.

Question: when you started your blog, were people at work weird about you taking pictures of your food? Do you now take your dSLR camera with you to work to take pictures?

Yes, everyone at work knows me as the girl with the blog at work and no one cares.

I have a slight addiction to my DSLR and it follows me everywhere. It’s my baby 🙂

Its’ never too late to follow your dreams! Culinary school has been the best decision of my life! My school has a program for students that already have a 4 year degree that last only a year. And they offer a ton of scholarships. It may be more doable than you think. Oh yeah and did I mention a 98% job fill rate right out of school! I’d love to answer any questions if you’re thinking about it!

Wouldn’t it be fabulous to just make your living off of something you love so much? Maybe one day we can both get there. 😉

I’m not surprised people want you to make their food; your creations always look delicious!

I would also LOVE to prep meals for people! It would be fun to do all the cooking & rewarding! I think people think healthy eating has to be hard or boring…not so!! The framing job looks fabulous- nice work

Why NOT bring in lunch for your boss a few days a week for a reasonable price? If your boss was serious, go for it!

I worked for family so it’s different, but sometimes I brought in lunch for one of my colleagues who was trying to lose weight!

14 janetha g. @ meals & moves September 15, 2010 at 6:02 pm

my boss pays me $50 a week to make him lunch. it really helps with my grocery bill and i am making the healthy stuff for myself, anyway. it works out well!

15 Caitlin (EatFeats) September 15, 2010 at 6:40 pm

Cooking for others would be a fun job! I think that is one of the things I am most looking forward to in the (very far away) future when I become a wife or mom.

I don’t think you necessarily need culinary school to start preparing meals for others! I would eat what you are making any day, even without formal training!

My moms whole office has made me the same offer, haha. I’m seriously considering it also!

Haha, I would so take someone on an offer like that if they truly meant it. They’d have to eat by my rules, though. lol
PS – I’m hosting an awesome giveaway. Check it out if you’re interested!

20 Kara September 15, 2010 at 9:04 pm

I say totally take your boss’ offer! If my boss offered me that the word no would never cross my mind. Extra money to make someone else the same thing you’re eating for lunch? AWESOME.

21 Emily September 15, 2010 at 9:09 pm

I have to say that I’ve been meaning to mention how much I love the hosting site you’re using – especially because I love the way the photos fade into the page as you scroll! It’s so neat!

Anyway – I too would absolutely LOVE to just cook for someone full time and get paid, but I’m pretty sure my skills aren’t quite up to par … yet. I’m totally a DIY kind of gal, and have a appreciation for your low-budget framing, which looks great BTW. Props chica, from one deal-finder to the next!

22 Natalie September 15, 2010 at 9:12 pm

This post definintely gave me lunch envy! Your lunch is beautiful today!

23 grocery goddess jen September 15, 2010 at 9:18 pm

Meghann, you don’t need culinary school to cook for others! You have mad skills already. You should take her up on her offer and see if you can make some extra money from it 🙂

24 Lindsay September 15, 2010 at 9:19 pm

Love the food pornography typo … haha

25 Meghann September 16, 2010 at 10:26 am

I meant to say food pornography! I thought it would get a laugh 😉

That is so funny, I have 2 colleagues who offer me money continually to make their lunch! We are moving to new premises soon and I think I may do it one day a week for them. Iam constantly asked if I am vegetarian because my lunches are geneally plant based. I think I should try it, don’t you?!
