I Will Not Be Gator Bait

by Meghann on May 17, 2010

Good Morning!

Did you miss my Discovery Cove adventure on Saturday?!?! I could relive that day over and over again and never grow bored of it. 🙂

It has been a wet and rainy morning in Central Florida. The perfect way to start off a Monday, right? Luckily it was merely ‘drizzling’ when I woke up so I was able to get a quick 5 mile run in before the down pour began. 🙂

Good news!! I ordered a new Garmin!

As so many of you pointed out to me yesterday – thanks guys! – Amazon’s daily deal for Sunday May 16th was the Garmin Forerunner 305; which was marked down to $124.99 with free shipping! Score! I ordered one faster then you could say “great deal!” It should be here in 5 –7 business days. Hopefully, that will be in time for my triathlon on Sunday. Fingers crossed!

For breakfast I made a great bowl of berry-ful cereal

  • 1/2 cup Cheerios
  • 1/2 cup Shredded Wheat
  • 1/2 cup Honey Puffs
  • Sprinkle of Chia Seeds
  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Plain Yogurt

I believe this was my first taste of blueberries for 2010. I’m so happy they are finally coming into season. Now all I need is black berries and raspberries to follow suit and I will be all set for the summer. 😉

They Do Exist

Every Florida’s triathlete’s worst nightmare was realized this weekend when a local man was bitten by an alligator during a training swim in Lake Mary Jane at Moss Park on Sunday. (Full Story)

Ironically this is the same lake that I swam in for my triathlon last year and the same one Caitlin swam for her triathlon this past March. Yikes!

I am not normally one to ‘fear the water,’ but the fact that my triathlon is this coming Sunday has turned me into a bundle of nerves in reference to this news! Granted the triathlon on Sunday does not take place at the same lake, but it’s guaranteed that every lake in Florida has at least one alligator, if not several.

Luckily I won’t be the only one who will be entering the water this weekend. I’ll be surrounded by a couple of hundred of competing buddies who will hopefully scare all the alligators away. Now my new goal is to stay with the pack. If I feel myself slowing down I will just think of the gators and I’m sure the speed will come. There is no bigger motivator than fear, well for me at least. I will not become gator bait. 🙂

Ohh I wish I would have known about the Garmin deal!!! I currently have the Garmin 305 and I wanted to get another one for my husband for his birthday.

Yeah on getting a new Garmin! I am kind of pissed though – thought someone would have turned it in by now 🙁

Okay, if I knew gaters were in the water, pretty sure I wouldn’t get in! 😀

That is terrifying!! I’m sure you will be fine but I can completely understand the fear. My upcoming tri is in a lake and even though we don’t have gators up here I think it’s still scary not knowing what’s under you.

Just think how highly unlikely it would be for two gator attacks two weekends in a row. Really, this attack last weekend probably means there won’t be anymore for the rest of the summer. See, the water is safe now!

Good luck at your triathlon this weekend. I love summer in Florida because it means it’s triathlon season 🙂 I will be doing one at Madeira Beach (Tampa area) this weekend.

I agree with Megan above – it is SO rare to be bitten by these things – you’re probably more likely to get struck by lighting coming home today! Though that’s pretty bad too….
Have a good day anyway 🙂

super scary! i am not sure how you guys can live with the idea that gators are all over……us folk in so cal don’t have tp worry about that and it seems soooooo scary!

7 Carolyn @ lovinlosing May 17, 2010 at 9:16 am

Oh, no! Something to fuel Caitlin’s fears. That sucks!!

8 Meg May 17, 2010 at 9:19 am

That’s scary – but I think you’ll be fine 🙂 – find some gator repellant (if only, right?)

Make sure you keep a good eye on this Garmin!! I’d duct tape it to myself after that incident, I know it stinks to lose something like that 🙁

Happy Monday!

I loved how you used the Glee version of Bust a Move for your video! Very cute 🙂

10 Ashleigh May 17, 2010 at 10:31 am

OMG, that is not news you want to hear right before your triathalon!! I am sure everything will be fun though! So many people will scare the gator. Better swim fast 😉

11 Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday May 17, 2010 at 10:33 am

I would be terrified of a gator.

12 Erin May 17, 2010 at 10:46 am

That’s scary! I love the water but always get nervous in oceans, lakes, rivers because of the critters swimming around. There are signs everywhere in Australia not to go in the water because of deadly jellyfish!

I saw baby alligators when I was down in Orlando a few weeks ago. They were swimming around a lake in my uncle’s backyard. They were tiny, and kinda really cute! To bad they grow up to be big and scary. *sigh*

yikes! don’t even think about it! you’ll be great 😉

15 Becca May 17, 2010 at 11:11 am

Loved your groceries video! Question– how much do you spend per week on groceries?

16 Meghann May 17, 2010 at 11:17 am

It depends. Some weeks are pricier than others. I spent about $50 at Publix on Sunday, but spent like $20 at Whole Foods on Friday. So $70 for this week.

17 abbynormally May 17, 2010 at 11:59 am

I’d say a gator is a pretty good reason to stick with the pack!!

Good luck this weekend!

I’m so glad I read your comments yesterday about the Garmin! I had been researching via the Garmin website all yesterday morning because I want one for biking (mostly) and running secondarily and the 305 is perfect for multi-sports! I paid for 2 day shipping because I am THAT EXCITED!

19 Jenny May 17, 2010 at 12:40 pm

The odds of it being you are slim to none- just don’t wear anything dark!

20 pursuitofhealthfulness May 17, 2010 at 12:51 pm

SO BUMMED I missed out on the Garmin deal, but I’m glad you were able to replace yours!

21 theprocessofhealing May 17, 2010 at 1:30 pm

Oh WOW!!!! That IS scary but the chances of that happening are probably not very likely. Nothing like some good fear to motivate you though!

22 Tammy May 17, 2010 at 1:35 pm

I was wondering if you had heard about that….hope the swim goes well and fast!

23 Kelly May 17, 2010 at 1:52 pm

Yeaaaaah that would be enough motivation for me to not do it. I read teh story yesterday, pretty scary!

24 runningwithsass May 17, 2010 at 2:13 pm

so scary about the gator! I refuse to swim in water I can’t see the bottom of, so unfortunately no open water swimming for me!

25 Rachael May 17, 2010 at 9:14 pm

After living in Wyoming, I had serious grizzly bear fears. Everytime I went hiking (which was a lot – I was squatting in a cabin miles from anywhere ) I became convinced they were following me, in the bushes, over the next hill, etc. It probably didn’t help that my mother had sent me a book all about man-eating grizzlies.
I know how you feel.Rational or irrational, creatures with big teeth are scary.
