Jillian Michaels' Yoga Meltdown Review

by Meghann on May 6, 2010

The other week I was the lucky winner of Jillian Michael’s Yoga Meltdown thanks to a giveaway Bobbi was hosting on her blog N Her Shoes.

The Yoga Meltdown DVD contains two 30 minute yoga workouts. In typical Jillian fashion each work out consists of 3 circuit sessions that are divided by a couple of sun salutations.

IMG_6711.JPG

This is NOT your typical yoga DVD. Jillian is tough! Throughout the work out she really focuses on holding ‘power poses’ for 15 – 30 seconds at a time and putting her own twist on common poses. She also loves a good chaturanga push up! There was a whole series of push ups thrown in that had me dropping to my knees.

Do I believe this DVD can help you lose up to 5 pounds in a week? No way! I didn’t even break a sweat!

I would say this DVD would make a great supplement to any work out, but on its own it is just ok. Nothing was too challenging (besides the push ups) and the 30 segments were a bit too short for my taste.

I think for all my yoga needs I will be sticking to my hot yoga classes and let Jillian stick to what she’s good at – the 30 day shred. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I completed level 1 of the Yoga Meltdown DVD after work, but before then I had some mixed nuts as my snack.

Do you ever have those weeks where you swore you purchased the whole grocery store only to realize you bought practically nothing? Yep, that’s me this week.

I bought a full cart of groceries on Monday and somehow my fridge is now empty. It’s just me – where did all the food go?!?!

With nothing to eat in the fridge I headed to the freezer for dinner and discovered some salmon burgers I had purchased from Costco forever ago. I knew the salmon would make the perfect salad topper for what vegetables I did have in the fridge.

IMG_6713.JPG

The veggies underneath the salmon burger included arugula, radishes, onion, broccoli, mushrooms and tomato. All the veggies were seasoned with some oregano and sauteed on the stove top for five minutes.

IMG_6718.JPG

An apricot dressing and sprinkle of un-sweetened granola & goat cheese finished the dish.

IMG_6716.JPG

I prefer hot salads to cold salads. I also prefer hot sandwiches to cold sandwiches. I think I just like hot meals in general. ๐Ÿ™‚

For dessert I had the last 1/3 of my chocolate bar and a coffee flavored salt water taffy.

How cute are my parents?

(obviously I get my flair for crazy typos from my Dad ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

Heading to bed now!

Is tomorrow really Friday?!?! Woo hoo!!

Yummy looking salad. Btw, never had coffee flavored salt water taffy.

2 Jenny May 6, 2010 at 9:25 pm

Um, that is sooo cute that your parents do that! Love it… and I’m loving the taffy you’ve been having lately:)

3 whitinspired May 6, 2010 at 9:26 pm

Hahaha…the typo is hilarious!

4 Tiff May 6, 2010 at 9:30 pm

Did you gain any weight from your San Fran trip?

5 Meghann May 6, 2010 at 9:36 pm

I did and I plan to blog about this tomorrow.

6 theprocessofhealing May 6, 2010 at 9:31 pm

Jillian is awesome at intense workouts.. can’t see her doing yoga! Her No More Trouble Zones dvd will kick. your. bootay!

7 Dori May 6, 2010 at 9:37 pm

Your parents are too cute! I like cold food better. Everything tastes better to me cold and refrigerated the next day!

8 Erin May 6, 2010 at 9:53 pm

Aw, your parents are too sweet! Love it! I adore Jillian’s DVDs–great workouts.

9 Jenna May 6, 2010 at 10:13 pm

So cute!!

10 chasingthenow May 6, 2010 at 10:21 pm

I really want to try her DVD still, but I don’t quite see Jillian as a yoga teacher. Haha.

11 thewhatkateateblog May 6, 2010 at 10:33 pm

Your parents are so stinkin cute! I love that they have twitter & tweet cute things to each other! I havent seen JMs yoga video yet, but I am already a little bit of a skeptic!

12 Beth May 6, 2010 at 10:44 pm

Awwwww that is SOOO cute with your parents!! I love seeing things like that ๐Ÿ™‚

And for having nothing in your fridge I’d say you did a pretty awesome job with dinner!

13 Amy May 6, 2010 at 10:50 pm

I am the same way! I swear I bought $60 worth of groceries on Monday and had to dig out frozen soup from the freezer for dinner last night. It was delicious though. ๐Ÿ™‚
I keep hoping you’ll tell us someone brought back your garmin. I like to think good thoughts about people and ever since it went missing I just kept thinking that someone picked it up because they thought an expensive watch shouldn’t be outside and they would find the owner. ๐Ÿ™ I’m still holding out hope!

14 Samantha Angela May 6, 2010 at 10:57 pm

I’ve never tried a Jillian Michaels workout. I think I’ll stick to normal yoga.

15 Julie @ Wearing Mascara May 6, 2010 at 11:02 pm

Yea… something about yoga and Jillian Michaels in the same sentence doesn’t quite work. I think she needs yoga for herself though ๐Ÿ™‚

16 Ashleigh May 6, 2010 at 11:03 pm

Your parents are so adorable! Thanks for the DVD review!

17 Lindsay May 6, 2010 at 11:22 pm

Huh…so strange that Jillian has a yoga dvd out. She doesn’t really seem “zen” enough for yoga…if that makes sense.

I think I’ll stick with yogadownload.com classes instead. Thanks for the review, Meghann!

18 rebecca lustig May 6, 2010 at 11:44 pm

jillian is SO intense. haha soemtimes she scares me, but i love it

19 Lindsey @ Sound Eats May 6, 2010 at 11:48 pm

how your dad spelled “waite” is my maiden name!!

20 britchickruns May 7, 2010 at 2:00 am

Awh that’s lovely your parents still love each other!
Haha, I have those grocery weeks EVERY week. I think maybe I just eat too much food!?

21 Courtney (Pancakes & Postcards) May 7, 2010 at 2:40 am

I dig Jillianยดs other workouts (the Shred, Banish Fat Boost Metabolism, and No More Trouble Zones) but for some reason I just have a problem with Jillian teaching me yoga. I am all for a good hard yoga workout, but I feel like Jillian should be busting my balls and screaming at me, whereas I prefer yoga workouts to be slightly more Zen. : )

22 Marika May 7, 2010 at 2:57 am

Your mother’s middle (maiden?) name, Laakso, caught my eye… is her family Finnish?

23 Meghann May 7, 2010 at 9:13 am

Yep, I’m a quarter finnish ๐Ÿ™‚

24 Rachel @ Suburban Yogini May 7, 2010 at 5:28 am

I’m afraid that as a yoga teacher Gillian’s Yoga Meltdown makes me roll my eyes….

Your parents are too cute. My parents still hold hands which makes me all squeeeee!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

25 r May 7, 2010 at 7:16 am

Who gave you an ipad?

26 Meghann May 7, 2010 at 9:15 am

It was a gift. I will blog about it next week probably. I started playing with it last night and realized I had already developed some opinions on it, so I want to do a review of sorts.

27 Paige (Two Runners And A Brown Dog) May 7, 2010 at 7:39 am

When I first read your title, I thought it said, “Jillian Michaels has a meltdown!” I was like, what the heck happened to her??? LOL!

28 Simply Life May 7, 2010 at 7:43 am

oh that salad looks amazing!

29 runningwithsass May 7, 2010 at 8:58 am

30 day shred is crazy, I agree!

30 joieandrileysmommy May 7, 2010 at 9:10 am

Thanks for the review of her DVD. I have two of the “Biggest Loser” DVD’s; the cardio burn and weight shred.

31 Heather @ Side of Sneakers May 7, 2010 at 9:35 am

The groceries thing is me EVERY week- I swear I go to the grocery a hundred times yet never have anything.

32 kirsten May 7, 2010 at 10:00 am

you’re parents are SO cute! ๐Ÿ™‚ I love when people are still so in love after so many years of marriage!

33 DiningAndDishing May 7, 2010 at 10:13 am

Thanks for the review! I love Jillian and The Shred…so I’ve been curious about this. But I think she is better off sticking with intense cardio and strength training…she is a kick butt trainer!

34 Jennifer May 7, 2010 at 10:49 am

Thanks for the review! I was looking into purchasing that DVD, but might hold off now and keep yoga Jillian-free.

35 Monica C. May 7, 2010 at 4:38 pm

Your parents are amazing!

But what’s even more amazing is that dinner you put together. No way could I ever come home hungry and put together a dinner like that. The thing is, I know you actually really enjoyed that meal – which I think is awesome. You are just such a healthy eater – it’s great!

I love doing yoga workouts and mainly do them at home. My new favorite yoga dvd is Planet Yoga: Leeann Careyโ€™s Bend 2 Mend. Itโ€™s spot on for alignment. I thought your readers might want to check it out: http://planetyoga.hostedbyamazon.com/Planet-Introduction-Bend-2-Mend-Restorative-Yoga/dp/B0042HW032
