Wine Country

by Meghann on May 2, 2010

Welcome to Wine Country. 🙂

Today Derek and I ventured outside of San Francisco to soak up a little wine and sun in beautiful Sonoma County.

Why don’t I live here again?!?!

IMG_6253

We had a pretty early start this morning and on our way out the door I had a similar breakfast to what I had yesterday.

  • Kashi H2H
  • Granola Bark
  • Plain Greek Yogurt
  • Kiwi
  • Apple
  • Pumpkin Butter

Major THANKS to Beth and Cory for being such gracious hosts the last couple of days and letting Derek and I crash in the spare room. You guys are amazing and welcomed in Florida anytime. 🙂

On the way to wine country I had a Chocolate Chip Salt Water Taffy I had purchased in Sausalito yesterday.

Per Caitlin’s high recommendation Derek and I had booked two spots on the Platypus Tour bus today.

What Derek and I enjoyed most about the Platypus tour was their personalized approach to wine country. We visited 4 wineries throughout the day and each one was a small ‘Mom & Pop’ operation. A couple of our visits even took place in the owner’s back yards!

The tour was small, personal, and perfect for the two of us!

Our first stop was Inspiration Winery.

We paired several wines with different cheese and crackers.

I was a big fan of the Pinot Noir and ended up purchasing a bottle.

Next up was La Czar

Another tasting, another pour 🙂

Platypus provided a picnic lunch for our group.

My plate included 1/2 ham sandwich, 1/2 turkey sandwich, apples, potato salad, and an oatmeal cookie with whipped cream and strawberry (x2).

Our third winery (getting a little tipsy here) was Diablita.

My distaste for white wines was highly confirmed today when I found myself discarding the majority of the whites I sampled. They were all just too sweet for me.

Our last stop of the day was Stuhlmuller

I really, really liked the reserve cab here, but it was a little $$ for my taste.

Our tour ended in Jenna’s neck of the woods and she suggested we try Zazu for dinner.

IMG_6343IMG_6345

Zazu is a small restaurant that prides itself on local ingredients which can include  fresh vegetable from their garden and meat from their farm.

IMG_6347

We started with a bowl of bread.

IMG_6350

I had a mouth watering corn muffin. mmm…

IMG_6351

Derek demolished the rest of the basket. After a day of wine tasting we were both really hungry and the food moved a bit slow for us. :/

For my meal I ordered a AntiPasti trio that included tabbouleh, eggplant dip and raddishes.

IMG_6360

The meal was good, but really the best thing on my plate was the duck fat brussel sprouts I had on the side.

IMG_6356

It’s hard to beat crispy, greasy brussel sprouts. 🙂

Derek and i ordered the cookie fondue dish for dessert.

IMG_6363

That’s peanut butter cookies with peanut butter gelato that you dip in chocolate. Amazing! 🙂

IMG_6367

Derek finished off the chocolate for us.

IMG_6369

I’m wiped. Tomorrow we have more wine tastings to hit up, as well as one last dinner in san Francisco before we catch the red eye out of here.

This weekend has gone by way too quickly! Not fair. 🙁
