A Snowy Day in the City

by Meghann on February 10, 2010

Why, hello Snow. Its nice to meet you.

It may not have been the ‘storm of the century’ as originally predicted for New York City, but for us southerners there was a hell of a lot of snow falling from the sky today.

It did not take long for cabin fever to sink in this morning. After I treated my Mom to a relaxing massage (our hotel was running a 1/2 off special because of the storm and I felt guilty she had to miss work for the rest of the week) we decided to brave the snow and continue to explore the wonderful city we have fallen in love with this past week.

The majority of the other cake-off bloggers had been grounded as well and since Megan from Megan’s Munchies has never seen any part of NYC she joined us on our snowy exploration.

I really was craving a nice cup of hot soup for lunch today. Lucky for me there is a Hale and Hearty Soup on every corner in this city.

This was actually my first opportunity to personally witness the calorie counts NYC requires all restaurants to advertise on their menus.

Did it sway my decision of what to eat? Not really. Of course all the options were soup based, so none of the numbers were too scary.

I ordered a medium mushroom & lentil soup with a piece of crusty sourdough bread on the side.

The soup was pretty good and did the trick of instantly warming my body up.

The three of us had a great time exploring the city in the snow. We did a little shopping, saw Macy’s, and headed to Time Square so that Megan could experience the craziness for the first time.

Walking in the snow and slush was not so fun. My boots were not waterproof and my socks were soaked. After seeing so many girls walking around with cute rain boots I knew I wanted a pair of my own.

Best $25 I have ever spent. The boots kept my feet dry and they were fun to wear. ๐Ÿ™‚

p.s. not sure what I’m going to do with all the stuff I’m buying while I’m up here. I may need another suitcase. ๐Ÿ™

My Mom LOVES NY Cheesecake and this afternoon we were determined to find her a good piece. Someone had recommended Juniors for great cheesecake, so we headed to the closest location we could find in Time Square.

Hot tea was a must for this meal

My Mom ordered a piece of chocolate swirl cheesecake and was in creamy cheesecake heaven.

Megan and I both are not big cheesecake fans and instead split a piece of apple pie.

The apple pie was fantastic! It had a healthy dose of cinnamon – just the way I like it. ๐Ÿ™‚

Spiderman the musical?!?! Hmmm…. could be interesting.

For dinner my Mom and I were hoping for something simple and easy that was close to our hotel and didn’t require me putting pants back on (I was already comfy in my sweats).

The Diner right up the road fit all the above criteria perfectly.

The color GREEN was on my mind. I have been seriously lacking on the veggie department this week! After some menu browsing I ordered the Seared Yellowfin Tuna Nicoise Salad with red potatoes, hard boiled egg, green beans, capers, and olives.

The salad was just what my body was craving. Delicious.

For dessert I had the other half of my Buckwheat Crunch Raw Chocolate Bar from One Lucky Duck.

Not quite sure yet what tomorrow will bring, but I do know I have another early date with the hotel gym in the morning! ๐Ÿ™‚

Good Night!

Oh, before I forget!

The people at Electrolux sent me a little video that features my team in Kelly’s Cake-Off for a Cause (don’t forget to support the fight against ovarian cancer by voting here!)

sounds like you had a snowy but fun day! enjoy nyc while you are there!

2 theprocessofhealing February 10, 2010 at 10:38 pm

That seems like a pretty cool day!! I can’t imagine how all that snow must be for you, with being from FL and all. Have fun with it! ๐Ÿ™‚
Your apple pie looks awesome! I love cheesecake but that pie.. oh yum.

3 runnerd February 10, 2010 at 10:39 pm

Wow, I know how miserable wet, cold shoes can be–smart purchase with the rain boots! The plaid is pretty awesome, no lie.

4 Molly @vegandorm February 10, 2010 at 10:39 pm

That was cute – except they called your blog “IW of a College Student!” Oh well – what an amazing time you’re having!

5 Emilyeatsclean February 10, 2010 at 10:43 pm

I know you’re a FL girl, but I’m glad you got to experience some good ol’ snow….it does a body good! AND it gives you reason to purchase super cute boots and eat scrumptious soup! Enjoy the rest of your trip.

6 Kelly February 10, 2010 at 10:46 pm

Oh man, I measured a little while ago and it was 19 inches and counting. My bf lives and works in NYC and said the slushy mess was awful. Very cute rain boots, so necessary. I’m always jealous of my sisters super cute Burberry ones.

7 Jenna February 10, 2010 at 10:47 pm

glad you had yet another great day in NYC! yeah for the snow!
soup looks perfect for today and the new boots are super cute ๐Ÿ˜‰

8 Evan Thomas February 10, 2010 at 11:04 pm

I’ve never had Jr’s cheesecake, but I had their fish once and it was awful. I guess never get a protein from a place known for their dessert!

9 adrienmelaine February 10, 2010 at 11:04 pm

oh my god- what a zoo!

how much fun do you have in that city?

Also- thanks for your blogging101 series, fantastic info for me!

10 katajess February 10, 2010 at 11:04 pm

Those boots are funky. ๐Ÿ˜€ So jealous that get to live it up in NYC. ๐Ÿ™‚

11 Emily February 10, 2010 at 11:05 pm

Glad you got to enjoy some extra time in NYC even if it was unplanned. Those boots are super cute. NY women are always so fashionable. ๐Ÿ™‚
Hope you get home someday…

12 kt February 10, 2010 at 11:09 pm

Whenever I wear my rain boots, people comment on them, and I always say, best purchase I EVER made! Seriously! I never realized how much of a necessity they are until I had them. Yours are SUPER cute.

13 Angela February 10, 2010 at 11:10 pm

I LOVE your duckies!! heh…that’s what I call them anyways. I have two pairs and I love em.

14 Lisa (bakebikeblog) February 10, 2010 at 11:13 pm

My goodness that snow is CRAZY! Glad to hear that you were still able to get out and about in NYC though – LOVE those boots!

15 fromatopink February 10, 2010 at 11:20 pm

Enjoy the rest of your time in the city! If you’re looking for a great breakfast, with entertainment to boot, check out Ellen’s Stardust Diner. It’s one of my personal faves and I go everytime I’m in NYC. ๐Ÿ™‚

16 Erin February 10, 2010 at 11:24 pm

I really like that NYC labels its calories — even though I feel informed enough to make healthy decisions, there are always surprises (even with soup sometimes!) so it’s nice to have more information to help make good choices.

17 Teri [a foodie stays fit] February 10, 2010 at 11:24 pm

I LOVE that NYC requires calorie counts on their menu. I wish it was a nationwide law! And your boots are so cute!

18 Cait February 10, 2010 at 11:29 pm

Looks like you’re having fun in NYC! That’s just a hop, skip and a jump from my little town in NJ so I visit all the time. ๐Ÿ™‚ Your boots are adorable!

19 Heather (Heather's Dish) February 10, 2010 at 11:32 pm

looks like a fun day in spite of the snow! i LOVE the boots…if only i could find some like that for $25 here… ๐Ÿ™‚

20 Niki @ Niki's Neverending Adventure February 10, 2010 at 11:35 pm

Glad you had a good day in the snow!! Cute rain boots!

21 tiffnie February 10, 2010 at 11:50 pm

Really sucks about the weather, but in a way, it’s neat you get to extend your stay in NYC and explore the city more. I adore your rain boots…can’t believe they’re only $25!

22 Karla February 10, 2010 at 11:59 pm

NY Cheesecake is delicious! I’ve had Junior’s before very tasty! But the best I’ve had there is at Carnegie Deli! Soo good!

Did you actually get to meet Kelly Ripa? It doesn’t look like she interacted with the bloggers at all.

23 Morgan February 11, 2010 at 12:09 am

You guys definitely made the most out of your situation, looks like a blast!
Love the boots, mine are one of the best investments ever made too! They are so easy to slip on to walk the dog when it’s cold and rainy!

24 Megan February 11, 2010 at 12:24 am

The rain boots is a new trick I just learned after living in Wisconsin for 18 years. Perfect for a college student on the slushy days of Wisconsin winters and the fall and spring showers1

25 melissa February 11, 2010 at 12:32 am

Wow I can’t believe that’s all the snow NYC got! I’m 30 min outside of the city in NJ and we got 10 inches! Yikes!

26 caronae February 11, 2010 at 12:42 am

Haha, kind of funny that they called your blog “the inner workings of a college student”, lol. Hope you’re having fun in the best city ever!

27 Breanne February 11, 2010 at 1:10 am

I LOVE your blog ( i read it multiple times a day!) and i just wanted to say that i am SO jealous of the fact that you are stuck in NYC right now! I’ve never been. I’m going in June, and being stuck there would pretty much be my dream! haha

p.s. LOVE the boots!

28 meyergirl February 11, 2010 at 1:13 am

It’s snowed here THREE times in the past week and a half. It’s actually been 6 years since it snowed like this. It was coming down like crazy this morning. Have fun exploring!

29 foodfitnessandfreya February 11, 2010 at 3:08 am

They have to calorie count EVERYTHING? That must be so hard for smaller home-made businesses :s eek!
I’m glad you made the best of a bad situation by exploring the ciity more ๐Ÿ™‚ who says snow has to ruin the fun!?

30 M February 11, 2010 at 7:42 am

Smaller businesses are exempt.

31 Tasha - The Clean Eating Mama February 11, 2010 at 4:18 am

Being that I am from Seattle one would think that I own many pairs of boots. Nope not one – I am very jealous of your boots. They are super cute!

32 eaternotarunner February 11, 2010 at 7:48 am

At least you get some extra time to enjoy the city! Have fun!

33 Madeline - Greens and Jeans February 11, 2010 at 8:11 am

I am with you on this whole “stuck in the big city thing!” Definitely torn between being excited about being here and feeling bad about missing work! Enjoy the rest of your extended snow day!

34 dianacheung February 11, 2010 at 8:31 am

way to put a positive/fun day on a wet situation (pun intended). Great eats!

35 RunToTheFinish February 11, 2010 at 9:54 am

Will you be back on Orlando next week? I’ll be there for work and thought we might be able to meet for a run on Wednesday? Of course that probably depends on where you work!

36 Can You Stay for Dinner February 11, 2010 at 10:19 am

I would really love a piece of that cheesecake your mom ordered! And that apple pie! The flaky crust alone!
If you get a chance, John’s Pizza is my favorite in NYC. They make a delicious thin crust pizza and offer whole wheat dough if you’d like.

37 Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday February 11, 2010 at 10:54 am

I love love love your new boots ๐Ÿ™‚

Buckwheat chocolate, eh? Interesting…

38 Missy Maintains February 11, 2010 at 12:04 pm

Love your rain boots! Where are they from? I love that you are trying out all of these places near my work that I’ve never been to. Now I know what is next on my list to try!

39 runningaroundnormal February 11, 2010 at 12:07 pm

Sounds like you’re making the best out of the situation ๐Ÿ™‚ Your mom’s cheesecake looks delicious!

40 Morgan February 11, 2010 at 12:14 pm

No NY pizza?

41 Tracy February 11, 2010 at 1:08 pm

Good idea about the boots! I bought a pair this year and I don’t know why I waited so long to buy some! Quesion for you: where did you get that vest you were wearing?!?!? It looks so cute!

42 skinnyrunner February 11, 2010 at 1:16 pm

cute boots!
im not a big cheesecake fan either but they said new yorks is the best…

43 Kristen February 11, 2010 at 1:23 pm

Glad you enjoyed NYC, even in the snow! Snow storms are fun in the city because there is still so much to do. My office was closed but instead of venturing out, I just relaxed and enjoyed my unexpected day off ๐Ÿ™‚

I don’t eat at fast food or chain places often, but the calorie counts don’t really affect my choices when I do. I think for other people who be more into the calorie counting method it could be beneficial.

44 ny wolve February 11, 2010 at 1:33 pm

I follow your blog, and as a Southerner who has lived in New York a long time, appreciate your insight on my new home town. I am glad you still got to be out and about, and sample the city, despite the snow.

45 Catherine February 11, 2010 at 2:59 pm

Happy to see you all made the best of your unplanned extended stay in NYC!! It was kind of gross out yesterday, but it didn’t seem to stop you – I on the other hand hibernated in my apartment as much as possible after stepping in a huge slush puddle :/

46 livelifeeatright February 11, 2010 at 3:09 pm

AHHHHH BURR!! That picture needs some hot soup, warm bread and a hot tea STAT!!!

47 Lauren February 11, 2010 at 4:01 pm

That was so nice of you to treat your mom. Sometimes the snow in the city is so beautiful, but such a nuisance. The rain boots are a must. I wear mine all the time in the snow!

48 Megan February 11, 2010 at 4:39 pm

Enjoy the rest of your time in NYC…it sounds like you really took advantage of your trip here!!!

49 Beth February 11, 2010 at 6:12 pm

Your mom should also check out Roxy’s Diner in Times Square for amazing cheesecake. ๐Ÿ™‚

50 kristilyn February 11, 2010 at 6:35 pm

Looks like you had another great day, aside from the snow (wet snow is NOT fun!). I love that soup place! I think more restaurants should take a cue from that and post the nutritional info for their goods out in the open. Now you made me want to make some crusty bread for a soup night one of these nights … mmm!

51 Amy February 11, 2010 at 7:02 pm

Check luggage prices – it might be cheaper to mail your stuff back. One price boxes hold a lot!

52 Erin February 11, 2010 at 8:11 pm

Cute boots! I really need some cute snow/rain proof boots.
Also, calorie counts are only required in chain restaurants. So most restaurants in nyc don’t post calories because they aren’t chains.

53 Christina February 11, 2010 at 10:05 pm

You went to Juniors and didn’t try the cheesecake!? It’s supposedly the best ever. I hope you’re Mom enjoyed it ๐Ÿ™‚

54 Lauren February 12, 2010 at 12:20 pm

How pathetic is it that I got really excited that I could see my office in the background of your second picture?!? hahaha

Anyway, wow, I’m sorry you had to endure the snow! However, it looks like you fared just fine! Glad you’re enjoying NYC.

55 Matt May 12, 2010 at 4:37 pm

A good way to ensure a great hotel gym is to check out before you leave for your next trip. Also be sure to write reviews about the facility. We’re a new website so we really need people to write reviews.
