Trying a New Place

by Meghann on January 24, 2010

The other week I tweeted a request for Valentine’s dinner suggestions in the Tampa area. One reader e-mailed me immediately raving about Pane Rustica Bakery & Cafe in South Tampa.

After studying the menu I knew this wasn’t what we were looking for for Valentines Day, but did know it would make the perfect Sunday lunch spot! I jumped on the chance to check the cafe out for lunch today.

As soon as we walked in I fell in love with Pane Rustica. They had a great casual yet elegant atmosphere and everything was so clean and beautiful.

IMG_7438.JPG

All of the lovely baked goods and flatbreads immediately caught my eye.

Not to mention the lovely desserts!

IMG_7423.JPG

I nibbled on a sample of flatbread while waiting in line to order.

IMG_7418.JPG

Pane Rustica has a very fresh seasonal menu. I was considering the flatbread for lunch, but in the end went with a hearty sandwich.

IMG_7431.JPG

Oven roasted fall vegetables with herbed goat cheese on the 7 grain bread.

IMG_7447.JPG

served with a side of olives and herb roasted potatoes

IMG_7449.JPG

You can just imagine how incredible this sandwich was!

IMG_7454.JPG

I think it was the herbed goat cheese that put it over the top! ๐Ÿ™‚

Derek and I were temped to order dessert, but in the end we both cleaned our plates and were too stuffed to think about fitting in another bite. Next time though we want to at least try on of their fabulous cookies! ๐Ÿ™‚

After we stuffed ourselves silly, Derek and I thought it would be a good idea to take a walk on Bay Shore to help our settle our stomachs.

IMG_7465.JPG

It was a windy, gorgeous day!

IMG_7463.JPG

This is why I love living in Florida!

IMG_7467.JPG

Beach weather in the middle of January! Can’t beat that!

We walked for just over an hour including a break on the above bench where we almost both went to sleep. The whole walk brought back memories of when I ran along the water during Gasparilla last year. It got me very pumped for this year’s race!

After our walk our stomachs were finally ready for the dessert we had promised each other. On the way back to the apartment we stopped at Berryism where I ordered a small original tart yogurt with raspberries and chocolate covered pretzels.

IMG_7469.JPG

I couldn’t resist a side by side shot of mine and Derek’s yogurt.

IMG_7470.JPG

Boys will be boys…

I didn’t end up leaving Tampa until late and by the time I arrived home and went to the grocery store I was starving. I ended up throwing just a bunch spanish inspired ingredients in a pan and calling it dinner.

IMG_7483.JPG

My mish mosh dinner contained:

  • onion
  • carrot
  • yuca
  • corn
  • black beans
  • cilantro
  • avocado
  • salsa

IMG_7482.JPG

with blue corn tortilla chips

IMG_7488.JPG

My last minute meal turned out great. All the flavors complimented each other perfectly and it was fun to have the chips as dippers.

IMG_7473.JPG

For dessert I had two of my Almond Butter Chocolate Chip cookies that I made last Sunday.

IMG_7492.JPG

And with that the weekend is over. ๐Ÿ™

On the bright side that means its only 2 more weeks until my birthday. ๐Ÿ™‚

Have a great week!

Good night!

Looks like such a great place, and i’m beyond jealous of the weather and the fro-yo. It was 41 here today, and i went out in just a sweatshirt instead of my down coat. It felt like springtime!

25 Running on Faith January 25, 2010 at 1:17 am

I am jealous of your weather!! The rain has to stop here in NorCal!

26 sophia January 25, 2010 at 1:40 am

That’s funny — When I read the sandwich menu, I thought to myself, “I would probably order the one with the fall veg and goat cheese”…and so did you!
I thought SoCal was supposed to be hotter than Florida…but guess not! It’s not exactly skirt and shorts weather right now, brrr….

By the way, have you tried taro before? Does it taste like yucca? I’d love to try yucca but I’m afraid it’ll taste bland like potatoes.

27 Lisa (bakebikeblog) January 25, 2010 at 2:00 am

28 Heather (Heather's Dish) January 25, 2010 at 2:04 am

Now do you actually LIVE in Tampa or are you just visiting? My husband and I live there too!

31 Erin @ cookingandthecity.com January 25, 2010 at 8:16 am

I am so jealous of your self-serve frozen yogurt place! Please keep going back and sharing your treats so I can live vicariously through you haha. I live in New York and even though we have great places like pinkberry etc I want self serve with tons of flavors/toppings!
