I have Chandler’s Job

by Meghann on January 21, 2010

Many people ask me what I do for my full time job.

Officially my title is ‘Marketing Assistant’ and I work for a software company that specializes in the K-12 education market. But that doesn’t tell you much, does it?

In reality I assist with the sales team, write internal and external communication for my company, help plan our company’s annual user group, coordinate tradeshows, and what ever other duties that need to get done – trust me I can go on and on here. 😉

My siblings like to say I have Chandler’s job because no matter how many times I explain it to them, they still have no idea what I do! 🙂

My job changes day to day and I have learned to roll with it. Marketing and communications are what I love to do and every day is a new challenge to conquer.

This morning I was actually a flight booking and hotel reserving machine. We have clients that are sort of like ‘VIPs’ at our conference (for a price) and we – meaning me – coordinate their travel arrangements.

Let me just tell you that coordinating travel for 50 or so people from all over the U.S. and Canada is a lot of work! I was kept very busy and the morning flew by.

I did take a mini break at 10:00 to nibble on the mixed nuts I brought for my snack.

And when lunch time came around I was more than ready to eat a big bowl of greens.

My beautiful salad had

  • massaged kale
  • sprouts
  • left over roasted veggies
  • tabouli
  • 1/4 avocado
  • tomatoes
  • hummus
  • crumble pita bites

I love the way hummus coats salads and make everything in them taste extra creamy and delicious! 🙂

For dessert I snagged one addicting Almond Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie

And now I’m stuffed. Great lunch and dessert!

What job do you have? Or better yet, what is your dream job?

Mine has always been to do marketing for Disney World! But now I think it would be fun to do marketing and event management for big races like NYC or Boston! 🙂

1 megzzwinsatlife January 21, 2010 at 2:49 pm

I work for a casino in their corporate office in NYC doing finance… We have casino’s in Vegas, Atlantic City and Mississippi… Funny thing is I have a marketing degree but somehow ended up in finance..

My dream job would be doing social media marketing for a fashion company…

2 Shannon January 21, 2010 at 2:51 pm

Meghann, I feel exactly the same way – My title is “marketing specialist” and I work for an “association management software” company in Atlanta. My duties sound pretty similar to yours (tradeshows, communications, etc)! I also coordinate our social media marketing and write our daily blog. My parents still don’t understand what I do. They were all, “you get paid to blog?” I just said they can tell people I work in marketing. So crazy!

Ideally, I’d love to work from home writing about fashion and style. Maybe in 5-10 years that will be possible!

3 megan January 21, 2010 at 2:53 pm

I’m a computer programmer in a law office. Not ideal, but it’s not too bad.

My ideal job would be owning my own cookie baking company. Or being a stay at home mom 🙂 (or both?)

4 Matt January 21, 2010 at 2:55 pm

I am a “support staff” member at the aquatics center. I basically just sit at the desk in the weight room and swipe members in/sell guest passes. It is far from my dream job, even though I have no clue what that is yet.

5 julia January 21, 2010 at 2:58 pm

My dream job is the same as your dream job!

6 Amanda (Two Boos Who Eat) January 21, 2010 at 2:58 pm

Right now I’m a substitute instructional aide for grades k-12. I work on an “as-needed” basis which sort of makes it tough for me financially. Before that I worked in banking for seven years! I was a teller, new accounts and a supervisor.

Now I’m going to school to get my teaching credential. I want to teach high school english. Eventually I’d like to get involved with the school board and making healthy lunches and food options available at all schools.

7 Sarah January 21, 2010 at 3:02 pm

I’m a translator for a health insurance company. I love it, but I would love it even more if I wouldn’t have to sit at my desk 9 hours a day!

8 Kara (@ Kara's Marathon) January 21, 2010 at 3:02 pm

You’re a transponster!! 🙂

I love working in clinical research (my current title is Research Project Coordinator), but I think my dream job is something that involves both data and interaction with patients. We’ll see where my career takes me…

9 Kim January 21, 2010 at 3:03 pm

I’m an instructional designer… which is basically a Chandler job as well (sometimes I’m not even sure what I do!). Ideal job? Being a stay at home mom (eventually), volunteering with special needs, writing, contributing to a column?

10 Leah January 21, 2010 at 3:05 pm

I am an Administrative Assistant at a Financial Advising firm working for 2 seperate teams simultaneously. I man two desks, two phones, schedules for 5 people. It gets busy and I have become the queen of multi-tasking.

I also work part time at Nordstrom to supplement because I am grossly underpaid.

11 Tricia January 21, 2010 at 3:05 pm

I am a stay at home mother (for the time being) and it IS a dream job 🙂

12 Graze With Me January 21, 2010 at 3:05 pm

I have a similar job – I work as a Project Manager for FedEx. Basically I do something different every day and am constantly on my feet, running machines and on the phone. People don’t really “get” what I do either…

13 Alison January 21, 2010 at 3:06 pm

I’m a stay at home mom, which is my dream job, but the pay sucks. I’m 33 and still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up!

14 caronae January 21, 2010 at 3:07 pm

It’s awesome that you love your job so much! I’m a full-time student and I work part time in a library archive. I like it a lot, because I love books and history!

15 Laura Georgina January 21, 2010 at 3:07 pm

I love seeing what other people do…. and OMG, I used to be a marketing assistant too! It was at the international office of the university I worked for in England. It changed from day to day, and though the workload was insane, I loved most of what I did. The best part was meeting the students from all around the world after corresponding with them for months (about immigration, accommodation, and, um, how many pairs of socks to bring)–they were always so sweet and grateful (and brought pashminas to show for it!) So yeah, Chandler’s job for sure 🙂

At the moment I’m a research assistant at a university, which translates into note-taker and meeting organizer (I was duped! there’s no research involved!). I’m also moonlight as a newswriter for an online news wire and hope that will turn permanent and full-time soon, otherwise I’ll be heading back to the classroom for a postgrad certificate in International Relations….

16 Sarah R January 21, 2010 at 3:10 pm

I’m still a student. My first degree was in elementary education. I decided it wasn’t for me and am back in school full time working towards becoming a registered dietitian. Ultimately, I would like to have my own business preparing and delivering healthy meals for people who don’t have the time.

17 Morgan @ Life After Bagels January 21, 2010 at 3:12 pm

I think my dream job would be to be a “life coach” or “personal consultant” or the “one who makes you get your crap together” type of job where I run my own company.

My job that I have at the moment is pretty darn AWESOME too though, I’m a store manager of a beauty store . . . and the perks are pretty good 🙂

18 Jenna January 21, 2010 at 3:12 pm

I work in marketing as well 🙂

I am a project manager in marketing in the financial industry. My dream job however would have to be a product manager for a health food company or marketing for a fitness or health related magazine. I would love that!

19 Erin January 21, 2010 at 3:13 pm

I never thought to put hummus on salad! What a great idea. Also, how do you keep your leftover roasted veggies from going soggy and your avocado from going brown?

As for my job, I, too have a Chandler-esque job. I’m the director of records management for a university. It essentially boils down to helping departments understand what they need to be keeping and for how long. It’s very, very boring. In all honesty, my dream job is anything that keeps me busy all day long!

20 Heather (Heather's Dish) January 21, 2010 at 3:14 pm

i think that my dream job would be doing some sort of behind-the-scenes marketing (which is basically what I do already), OR to be a full-time writer (isn’t that all our dream?)

21 eaternotarunner January 21, 2010 at 3:15 pm

I work in real estate but my dream job would probably be a travel writer!

22 Jacquie January 21, 2010 at 3:15 pm

I took time off from school and worked in events and in the restaurant industry. I’m a public communication major now finishing up, but I’d love to work for a magazine and promote events and a healthy body image. Fun, fashion and food- my perfect pairing someday!

23 Kayla January 21, 2010 at 3:17 pm

I studied PR and journalism in school and loved it because it was so interesting, and then my first job was as a marketing assistant. I really loved it.
My dream job would be to work for a magazine I think.

24 audrey January 21, 2010 at 3:17 pm

i’m a search marketing specialist, and like you said no one ever knows what that means! i work for an agency that specializes in search marketing, both organic and paid search. i mostly do paid search and for the most part i really like it, my dream job would be a personal shopper haha.

25 Mellissa January 21, 2010 at 3:18 pm

I love reading what people do! I am a Marketing and Account Manager for a small marketing company- I put programs and proposals together to help grow accounts.

I do really like what I do but my dream job is to get paid to travel, eat and drink wine 😉

26 Tay January 21, 2010 at 3:28 pm

I am an administrative assistant/office manager for a book distributor. The company is quite large but we are in a sattelite office, so it feels very small and comfortable. Like you, my job is kind of hard to explain because my responsibilities are always evolving! But for the most part I provide support for two top executives and the account managers.

27 Becki January 21, 2010 at 3:38 pm

Everyone’s job’s seem so fun!

Right now I am a store manager for Starbucks. I love it. So many different things to do every day and so many different people to see.

My dream job…something in the dance world. (I also teach dance 3 night’s a week, mostly ballet and jazz) I am currently writing a business plan/proposal to run my own competition.

28 Lacey January 21, 2010 at 3:39 pm

I’m with your siblings on this one- I still don’t get your job- but as long as you enjoy it that’s all that matters.

My career choice was one of convenience (worst way to pick an occupation). I’m an ER Medical Coding Specialist, which means I read ER records and assign numeric and alpha-numeric codes for diagnoses and procedures so the records can be billed. BORING.

I would love to have my own collumn -Carrie Bradshaw without all the sex, lol. I love to write!

29 Erin January 21, 2010 at 3:42 pm

My only job right now is a little bit of freelance writing but I’m basically living off savings while I travel. This summer, I’ll be looking for a full-time gig, hopefully involving writing. My dream job is to host a show on Travel Channel! 😀

30 Samantha January 21, 2010 at 3:42 pm

Right now I am an accountant/ office assistant. It is very monatonous and boring, but it pays the bills. I would love to be a nutritionist, but am having trouble finding a program that can accommodate my schedule. Such is life!!

31 Yeaaahtoast January 21, 2010 at 3:45 pm

My dream job which I’m working towards is being a novel editor. (If anyone has connections please email me!!!)
My mom was a flight attendant and had a lot of time off, I’m a fast reader and have a passion for the written word, I love the idea of working from home on my own time and being there for my future little ones when I need to.

32 Amanda January 21, 2010 at 3:47 pm

I am a vet tech at a small animal clinic. I love it, but my dream job is something in the horse racing industry. I have always had horse jobs until now. I love love love horses and horse racing and I am determined to find my dream job here in Kentucky!

33 Leanne January 21, 2010 at 3:49 pm

Right now I’m a personal trainer, which I love because of the relationships I build with clients. It’s also great while in college because your schedule is so flexible.

My absolute dream job would either be restaurant critic, R.D./PT for one of my favorite foodie companies, OR natural foods chef. Someday!

34 lily @ Lily's Health Pad January 21, 2010 at 3:52 pm

I’m a psychologist. It pretty much is my dream job-thank goodness because I’ve spent many years in graduate school chasing this dream. However, being a full-time blogger wouldn’t be too bad either!

35 Jenna January 21, 2010 at 3:54 pm

I think you should do marketing at Disney! That would be super cool 🙂

36 Ali January 21, 2010 at 3:56 pm

I am the Assistant to the Dean of the Business School at Suffolk university. I mostly focus on Assurance of Learning, but I also do a lot of other unrelated tasks. I guess I kind of have Chandler’s job too, no one “gets” what I do.

My dream job would be to be a guidance counselor, which I am getting my M.Ed in right now 🙂

37 foodfitnessandfreya January 21, 2010 at 3:57 pm

I’m a student, so no job for me 🙁
But my dream job would be a dietician/nutritional therapist, or founder/owner/baker of an amazing cakes shop, like The Hummingbird Bakery, or that one that appeared in Sex and the City…that would be dreamy 🙂
Or being a housewife who spends all day baking and cooking cos I LOVE doing that!!
Your lunch does sound dlicious btw 🙂 good combos!

38 R. January 21, 2010 at 4:07 pm

I’m currently a stay at home mom and have been for 4 years, but before the kids came along, I was an elementary school teacher, and later a director for Sylvan Learning Center.

I can honestly say I have my dream job. I LOVE staying home with my kids and couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I do have an M.Ed though, so when the kiddies go off to school full-time, I’ll probably go back to work.

I love your blog, btw. 🙂

39 Jordan January 21, 2010 at 4:13 pm

I work in Marketing and Disney is my dream job too! Right now I’m a Marketing Project Manager for a carpet manufacturer in Georgia. I love the planning, designing and writing. I hate making travel arrangements, and luckily I don’t do that at this job.

40 Jamie (Food in Real Life) January 21, 2010 at 4:14 pm

Your camera takes such beautiful pics! What is mixed in with those nuts, looks like some kind of chocolatey cereal?

I worked in Marketing/online project management for about 6 years but I quit at the end of this summer to pursue my dream of becoming an elementary school teacher.

Now I’m a full time student and part time nanny to a 3 year old boy. 🙂

41 Jordan January 21, 2010 at 5:25 pm

I work in marketing and I’m also in grad school so I can teach HS History. Apparently two business degrees didn’t do it for me!

42 Heather January 21, 2010 at 4:16 pm

Your job sounds fun! (as far as jobs go…) I think it’s nice that it changes frequently because it keeps you from getting bored and keeps you on your toes!! I work in a dialysis clinic…my husband still doesn’t even understand that means I work with people on dialysis……haha

43 Amber from Girl with the Red Hair January 21, 2010 at 4:22 pm

I’m also in the marketing & communications field and I LOVE IT. But I understand what you’re saying because a lot of people have trouble understanding what I do too.

My dream job would be too work almost fully from home I think. I’d love to KEEP being a marketing consultant but on more of a freelance basis!

44 Autumn Tao January 21, 2010 at 4:27 pm

high school English teacher… and I LOVE IT!

45 Karla January 21, 2010 at 4:29 pm

I’m still in school 🙁
My dream job would probably be Secretary of State.
I would also be happy to have a bakery/store like Barefoot Contessa!
I’m all over the place!

46 Laura @ Backstage Pass to Health & Happiness January 21, 2010 at 4:38 pm

I plan concerts at some venues in Milwaukee! It’s a lot of pressure and stress (like any other job), but it is fun because it IS my dream job 🙂

Meghann, you should volunteer as a marketing coordinator for one of your local races! I am the volunteer marketing manager for the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon and LOVE it. It’s great for the community, but also for your resume!

47 Meg @ Be Fit Be Full January 21, 2010 at 4:41 pm

My ideal job is to be a stay at home mom 🙂 Which couldn’t come any sooner!

48 Raya January 21, 2010 at 4:48 pm

I have a bachelor’s degree in business/marketing from UCF and I do nothing with it. I actually work in a pharmacy. It’s by no means my dream job but it pays the bills…I would LOVE to do event planning or something cool like that though! I get so bored at work!

49 Angela January 21, 2010 at 4:49 pm

I’m a barista at starbucks, it sucks but it pays the bills! I really would love to own my own bakery, this has been a dream of mine for awhile, it just takes a lot of money and time both of which are limited but in a perfect world I would bake all day long!

50 rebecca lustig January 21, 2010 at 4:57 pm

that salad looks sOO fresh and satisfying!

my dream job would be to own a non profit organization and travel the world as a professional volunteer <3

51 Karissa January 21, 2010 at 4:57 pm

Right now I am a full-time law student. My dream job would be to own a bar with my husband. I just love the atmosphere of a good sports bar. And I happen to be a huge sports fan.

52 Anna January 21, 2010 at 5:06 pm

lol– you’re a transponsder! Right now, I’m an instructor of English at a small branch of Penn State…the pay sucks, but the job is pretty sweet– I like still getting a month off at Christmas, just like in college!

53 Heather January 21, 2010 at 5:09 pm

That Disney job was always been my dream, too! You’re so lucky you live in Orlando, I love it there 🙂 Right now, I’m a busy wife to an oral surgery resident and getting ready for baby numero uno…

54 Megan January 21, 2010 at 5:09 pm

I want to be Stone Phillips.

55 gotratl January 21, 2010 at 5:11 pm

You don’t by chance work for Brad Smith’s company do you?? Random I know…;-) I work as an analyst at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, focused on community-based chronic disease prevention. In other words, my group’s goal is to increase people’s access to healthy foods and physical acitivity through policy and environmental change. I could go on, but it’s a pretty cool gig! I also am a very amateur blogger for Girls on the Run Atlanta and my own emerging blog…

56 Chelsea January 21, 2010 at 5:20 pm

I know exactly what you do 🙂 But I also work for a software start-up (that then got bought my Microsoft) and also have a very hard time describing my job. From your title though, I had a good idea-YAY!

Wanna’ know my title? User Experience Designer. Figure that one out 🙂

57 Allison January 21, 2010 at 5:31 pm

Right now, I’m a student- but eventually I will be a doctor! I’m not sure what kind though yet!

58 carlysharec January 21, 2010 at 5:37 pm

I’m in marketing, too! I work as a copywriter, but I also get roped into doing a little bit of everything. Eventually I’d like to support myself through freelance work.

59 Mama Pea January 21, 2010 at 5:41 pm

So you are saying you are a transponster?!

I’m a SAHM and freelance writer with a law degree…not what I planned for, but the BEST JOB EVER!!!

60 Chloe @ Project Live Well January 21, 2010 at 5:41 pm

Really interesting to hear all about your job Meghann! You would be so well suited to being involved with the marketing for big races!

And yes, hummus on salads is a must – makes every salad instantly better.

61 Christie January 21, 2010 at 5:43 pm

I work for an insurance company training new employees to work in a call center. All anyone ever remembers is that I work in for an insurance company though. My family probably couldn’t explain what it is I do all day. I’m not sure what my dream job is. I’ve thought about so many things — environmental engineer, physical therapist, and staying with my current company to work in the marketing/research department. Who knows?….

62 carolinebee January 21, 2010 at 5:55 pm

HA omg i love that episode, toooo funny 😀 Your job sounds awesome and you are sooo lucky that u get to travel and you have a pretty sweet non-commute! My dream job is definitely to dance in any way, shape or form…but also nursing in the long run so hopefully i’ll cross that off my list soon!

63 Ada January 21, 2010 at 5:56 pm

I’m currently a student but my dream job would be an ER doctor. I just have to make it through the terrible pre-med requirements first;)

64 Niki January 21, 2010 at 6:00 pm

I’m a nurse! But I’m not working at the moment because I’m in grad school to become a nurse anesthetist!! I am super excited about this career move!! Another dream job would to own a cute little cupcake shop!!

65 Erin (Texan Couture) January 21, 2010 at 6:02 pm

Marketing sounds fun!
I currently work as a recruiter in the healthcare industry. I recruit, interview, staff & manage LVNs, RNs & CNAs. It can be pretty hectic and stressful, but for the most part I enjoy.
I got my degree in General Studies concentrating in Health Promotion, so my dream job would be putting together campaigns and doing outreach programs for the community of health issues. I just do not know how to get my foot in the door doing something like that but I am working on it!

66 Melissa January 21, 2010 at 6:07 pm

I’m a legal assistant and I work part-time and can walk to my job which is the best part (the hours and commute). My dream job would probably incorporate running somehow because that’s what I’m really interested in.

67 jabbeyeats January 21, 2010 at 6:16 pm

Your lunch looks great- I love the hummus avocado mixture in salads as well!

My dream job is either to be a full-time writer or to be a restaurant owner and head chef. For now, though, I still have three and a half more years of college to get through!

68 Molly January 21, 2010 at 6:22 pm

My dream job has always been to do advertising for Nike. I mean, come on! They always have the BEST and most inspiring campaigns out there.

Other than that I want to do what Im doing, which is be a teacher. I LOVE it!

xo- Molly

69 Sarah January 21, 2010 at 7:40 pm

Thank you for sharing, your job actually sounds very interesting. And lunch looks good, I love those kind of smorgasbord salads.

I just left a job that was making me very unhappy- really high stress without much compensation to make it worth it. My dream job would be writing for a living for various publications, physically and online. My shyness is my Achilles’ heel though; you have to put yourself out there and be aggressive to make those things happen which is really hard for me. I’m hoping I can get something off the ground in the next couple of months- if not it’s back to the regular office grind.

Hope you have a great weekend!

70 Annalisa January 21, 2010 at 7:41 pm

I had a similar job to your’s when I finished my undergrad degree but I hated the people I worked with — so negative and miserable 🙁 I did love the job though 🙂

I currently own a bookstore. I finished my MBA right as the economy tanked. I planned on a career in statistics but, I would have had to relocate to a larger city for less pay. I’ve always loved books and the industry. I love what I do but being self-employed has made it hard to walk away from the office in a lot of ways. My goal is to continue growing my business and turn it into a large non-profit.

71 Tracy January 21, 2010 at 7:42 pm

I am a kindergarten teacher, and this has always been my dream job!!!!! I love love love it! What type of software is it? Is it in schools in AZ? 🙂

72 theprocessofhealing January 21, 2010 at 8:02 pm

That salad looks so good, I use hummus as a salad “dressing” of sorts.

I’m still in college but right now I work at an after-school program with kindergarten and first grade. Love it. But i’m actually getting my business degree and I’m thinking about marketing but not sure yet.

My dream job would be to own my own bakery 🙂

73 Cel January 21, 2010 at 8:15 pm

I’m a pharmacist – I work in an adult medicine/palliative care ward of a community hospital.

I like my job, and can’t really think of anything (realistically anyway) that would suit me better. However, I’m a ‘young’ new grad (23), and it’s sometimes hard to imagine doing this for 30-40 years!

74 catms916 January 21, 2010 at 8:21 pm

I’m a private equity insurance broker… I know, boring! Good hours though and it pays the bills so no complaints here. My dreeeam job would definitely be to own my own catering company. Preferably one specializing in vegetarian cuisine. One day… for now I have to b happy just playing in my night classes at culinary school. 🙂

75 M January 21, 2010 at 8:44 pm

I am a litigator. *cries*
(There is no crying in litigation.)

76 allisonisactive January 21, 2010 at 8:47 pm

I am a middle school language arts and reading teacher! I love my job! I wouldn’t trade it for anything… but I would take a raise. 🙂 I want to get my master’s or possibly doctorate in English so that someday I can teach college, though. I think eventually that would be a good challenge for me.

77 Monica C. January 21, 2010 at 9:01 pm

I am an attorney in a large law firm. It has been my dream to be a lawyer since the age of 5 or 6. That having been said, I would also love to be a psychiatrist or psychologist, some kind of counselor or therapist, or a documentary filmmaker!

78 hemp jogger January 21, 2010 at 9:40 pm

I’m an eye doctor, but I’d love to be a model, lol. Totes not attractive enough, but I love fashiona nd the entire thought of being famous and getting my pic taken for a living. Ridic I know 🙂

79 Erika January 21, 2010 at 10:59 pm

I am a physical therapist – love it/hate it, lol…love working with people, love that I don’t sit at a desk all day, love helping make people stronger and sometimes even discover the joy of fitness and health, love that my day is VERY active and physical and rewarding…..hate it though because I am often exhausted working other people out to work myself out, exhausted hearing about other folks woes, paperwors sucks, and I work long hours. But, I can’t beat the pay and the joy I get, makes all the negatives worthwhile….My dream job would be doing exactly what I do right now, only less hours.

80 Jessica @ Jessica Balances January 21, 2010 at 11:25 pm

You do have Chandler’s job! How fun! My dream job would be anything that combines my two loves: journalism and health & fitness. I’m about to graduate college, so who knows – maybe my dream job is right around the corner…

81 Doug January 22, 2010 at 10:08 am

I want to say for the past ten years I have been working my dream job as a radio personality… you are always looking for that next big step though. If I wasnt in radio, I would probably be working as a flight attendant or on a cruise ship! Something that involves travelling..

82 jenngirl January 22, 2010 at 2:58 pm

This is so random, but they showed the clip on Friends yesterday of when the girls are trying to win a game but cannot think of what Chandler does for a living! haha always cracks me up.

Your job sound nice because you have so many different duties, I bet it’s not monotonous day in day out.

I’m a student, hopefully going to graduate school this coming fall for Clinical Psychology. Dream job? Something in the wine industry, or blogging. Just dreams, for now 😉

83 Sarah January 22, 2010 at 7:34 pm

I’m a Search Marketing Manager at a top digital ad agency. We also have Disney as a client, marketing their movie/video releases. I personally used to do stuff for Disney Parks! You could move to Seattle and come work with me… 🙂

I would love to become a pastry chef or food critic!

84 Laura May 13, 2012 at 7:49 pm

haha my friends say the same thing about my job – I’m in the IT field – wasn’t really ever my “dream” persay, but I was/am fairly good at it. I don’t hate it, but would prefer less hours so I can do more active things the other hours of my life…
