The Spark Giveaway

by Meghann on January 20, 2010

This morning I brought back an old favorite: Tennis Court Boot Camp!

My head was so wrapped up in marathon training for the last few months that I almost forgot this existed. It was a great mix up per my usual routine. I really need to look in to doing these one a week again.

I started my work out with a 2 mile jog to warm up.

Then I repeated the following circuit 5 times in my complex tennis court

  • 5 Suicides across the length of the tennis court (a suicide is when you touch one end of the court, sprint to the other side, touch the end, and then sprint back again)
  • 30 High Knees
  • 30 Butt Kicks
  • 30 Jumping Jacks
  • 30 Jump Ropes
  • 10 Push Ups
  • 30 sit ups

Including my 2 mile warm up, the whole work out took me about 45 minutes to complete. πŸ™‚

Maddie was very interested in my bowl of cereal today

IMG_6869

Sorry Maddie, but Mommy does not share her cereal with anybody. πŸ˜‰

The large bowl was just what I needed after my boot camp. I relished every crunchy bite.

4 Marisa Kaneshiro January 20, 2010 at 9:55 am

Hi
I’m kind of new to the whole blog world, just started reading them a few months ago. I’ve heard so much about this book and would love to get a copy. Our bookstore on the military base doesn’t carry it and I’m pretty sure the Germany economy won’t have it either (or maybe they would but I don’t read German ha ha ha). I also like your circut workout – thinking about trying that out tonight πŸ˜‰

5 Mandy January 20, 2010 at 9:56 am

I like Sparkpeople so it’d be cool to see what the book entails.

Also now I’m craving granola.

67 Jamie January 20, 2010 at 10:27 am

I would love to read the spark book!

I also have always done suicides as running down to the baseline, all the way back to start, all the way down to the service line, back to start and so on until you have touched every line on the court. THOSE are really tough!! you could also start with the closest line on the court and then build up to the further ones. It definitely helps a lot with agility!

68 Cassie January 20, 2010 at 10:29 am

Your workout reminds me of our tennis practices in high school! We would do another great sprint workout on the tennis court too… hope you can follow along! Picture a tennis court….

Starting at the bottom left corner, run up the very leftmost side of the alley to the net. Side-step to the closest line to your left (the one that separates singles from doubles) and run backwards until you get to the line in the middle of the court (the one that separates the serving boxes from the rest of the court). Sidestep until you reach the T in the very middle of the court – and run forward to the net, and then backwards down that same line. Sidestep to your right again until you reach the other doubles lane. Sprint up to the net, and run backwards all the way to the back of the court, sidestep to the very right-most line on the court, and sprint up and backwards back. Then sprint back to where you started, and do it again!

It’s hard to put into words, but I think you’ll really like it. (I mean you won’t enjoy it at the time, but afterwords it’ll be worth it!) It really works all sides of your legs!

Another fun (aka torturous) tennis workout is a jumping squat. You’ll feel those the next day πŸ˜‰

Let me know if I confused you too much!!

69 Katie B. January 20, 2010 at 10:29 am

112 allisonisactive January 20, 2010 at 11:25 am

Your tennis court boot camp is giving me flashbacks to college cheerleading – our coach was a big believer in plyometrics and we did them across the basketball court many, many times. They did improve my tumbling, though!

123 Brittany January 20, 2010 at 11:38 am

I’ve been following your blog for about 6 months now and it has inspired me to finally take control of my health! I have always fought the weight battle but always stuck to some yo-yo diet and just ended up gaining the weight (and usually more!) whenever I went off of the diet. I’ve NEVER really tried to throw exercise into the mix. Exercise intimidates me but I’ve decided I can do it! Yesterday I started day 1 of a 9 week training plan for a 5K, it starts off using the Galloway method…it was hard but I’m glad I pushed myself and ran the time I should have. I’m trying to eat as nutritionally as possible with all the great tidbits I’ve learned from your blog. It’s not so much a diet but a completely new lifestyle of healthy living! The book from Sparkpeople would be such a helpful tool as I embark on this new lifestyle!!

124 Beth January 20, 2010 at 11:39 am

Ooooh, I’d love to get my hands on that!

125 Laura January 20, 2010 at 11:39 am

127 Jayce January 20, 2010 at 11:42 am

Hey Meghann! How are you liking your iPod shuffle? Is it still working okay for you during your workouts? I would like to find out whether Apple fixed the problem with them (not working when sweat contacts the volume/master control).

I love sparkpeople.com! It’s an awesome site; I’ve been using it for a couple of years now (username legalb!). I find it so motivating to see people of all levels accomplishing their goals. There are people completing their first 5k and people doing Ironmans! Not to mentions lots of marathoners and sensible distance triathletes. πŸ˜‰ I flipped through the book the other night at Chapters and saw some people in it that I follow on the site. Weird but cool!

Have a good one πŸ™‚

I am so excited to read this book. I keep hearing good things!

207 Kristy January 20, 2010 at 2:01 pm

I used to do something similar to the suicide while I was on the tennis team… We would do in a ladder style where we would run and touch the line closest, run back to touch the first line, run to touch the second farthest line, run back to touch the first line, and keep going until you touch the line farthest away. And then do it backwards. We were motivated to move FAST because the slowest 5 to make it back ran lap! This might sound confusing, but it could be a good variation to the suicide.

208 Niki January 20, 2010 at 2:02 pm

That book sounds great. I just discovered your blog and its such an inspiration to me. Im 19 and trying to lose weight (50+ lbs) and im starting to eat vegetarian. Also my mom wants to run a marathon this year so i think this book, plus your blog, would help to inspire us.
